Pompey support

they've sold 8800 tickets for Spurs away in the FA Cup - that's pretty darn impressive

It is, but they’ve been languishing in the bottom 2 leagues for years, so it’s not all that surprising as it’s their biggest game for years. Also not that far up to London from Portsmouth.

well..... the city's population is above 200k and the conurbation includes Fareham, Gosport, Havant, Waterlooville, and possibly Chichester. That's a lot of area to capture a fan-base from

Did you know these two facts about Portsmouth?
- it's the densest population in the UK (more than London)
- it's actually an island - Portsea. This makes Portsea the 3rd most populated island in the British Isles

Not much different to us taking 7,000 to old Trafford. In fact, given that the population of Portsmouth and I'm guessing it's the first time they've played there probably less impressive.

What % of the Portsmouth population likes football? What % of the Burnley population likes football? It’s the worst argument about for attendances.

Of course it's not an exact science but I doubt the % of population interested in football is not too much different. I'm pretty sure they sold out Fratton park most, if not all weeks in the PL.

I love how the immediate reaction from everyone seems to be
“Yeah but…”

And immediately try to explain why it’s not that impressive, when it really is.

Brilliant fan base. Had some good away days mingling in with the Pompey fans and loved a few visits to Fratton Park. Had some lads stay with us many moons ago before going to watch them at Old Trafford for a cup game and they likened their Pompey fan base as ‘like a northern town/side stuck in the south’.

8,800 people want to go to a football match. Is that really that impressive?

Always liked Pompey fans as I think the majority are similar to most Burnley fans that they are pretty grounded.
It is very good support but I think we would sell out in similar circumstances.
On a side note, I seem to remember some of their fans invading the pitch during the game in the 1981-2 season or have I just imagined that?

No you haven't imagined it think we were winning 3-0 and a handful left the away end and got on the pitch from the cricketfield stand.Obe of them had a quiff like tin tin and got a bit of stick from the longside

Great support, great club. They will make some noise at the Lane. Will be an ace day out for them. Good luck Pompey from your Claret friends Up North.

If they haven't sold out, it's a meh from me. They average more than double that, travelling to world class new stadium just up the road against a side they haven't played for a while. I quite like Pompey, but would actually expect them to sell more if the tickets were available. Then again, not cheap just after Christmas if you're taking the kids. I've changed my mind. Good Effort..

I suspect the 8,800 is because they have sold out.

How many would have been par in these circumstances? It's a massive day out for a very well supported club, with the unique opportunity to take more tickets than are usually available. Why wouldn't you go if you were a Pompey fan and you could afford it? I would expect nothing less of them- which is a compliment.

They had requested more tickets but the request was politely declined.

I still wish Pompey had been liquidated that season in the Premier league when they breached every rule going, got off with it and we got relegated.
I like the fans though, very passionate.

Proper club pompey (I have to declare an interest as I've a pompey supporting part of the family). For a city of its size its still very much working class and based on what's left of their traditional industry. It does have the feel of many northern towns. 8,000 is impressive but not unexpected from these today. Nonetheless their away support is very impressive every week. They're averaging 1,500 away this season, not bad considering their nearest game is Charlton. In comparison we've about 5 games within that distance this season

And for conformation, it's:
"Play up Pompey
Not
"I O pompey"

I’ve never really understood why support is described as impressive. As someone else says, 8000+ football fans want to go to a football match so are going to a football match. It’s the same for the ‘loyal’ fans who travel the country to support their team - they do it because they enjoy it. I don’t consider myself a particularly special holidaymaker for example.
