Which players from the past would suit our team today

Blake would not suit this side at all. A good player, sure, an excellent one, one of our best. But not for this side. Not suited at all.

Danny Ings though? In this side? High press? Dropping deep? On the shoulder of the last man? Clinical? Tailor. Made. Yes please.

He doesn't suit this side, at all. Where's he gunna play? Wide? So much of our system is dependent on pace, with Zaroury, Benson or Tella getting chalk on their boots. Not Blake's game, never was. Upfront? Pretty obvious that Kompany has been using his number nine the same way Spurs use Kane - dropping deep, physical presence, distracting defenders, so the aforementioned wingers can do their thing beyond him. More Blake's game but the pressing and althleticism it demands isn't him. He's never been a number nine. He'd be knackered after five minutes with the pressing which would be demanded of him.

I love Robbie Blake with a deep passion but I cannot imagine for the life of me why people would want to see him in this team. Hooked after about 5 minutes for refusing to press I reckon.

I'm going off what and how we've played so far this season, with the ball, without the ball, formations and systems - and Blake doesn't fit it. The way of playing you describe - we haven't played it yet. And I think it's in part down to Twine not being strong enough off the ball, and the same would apply to Blake. No-one would argue against Blake being a magnificent footballer.
