Am I missing something obvious?
As per the thread title
About 10-15 mins into the 2nd half WBA had a goal kick.
Their goalie placed the ball on the 6 yard line, there was a defender to his RH and LH side on the corners of the 6 yard line.
Goalie fannies about for 10 -20 secs to take the kick, then side foots it to the defender on his right who stops it with his hand, moves it a few inches, fannies about for another few seconds then passes it to a team-mate on the right wing.
Now that the rules/laws of the game have changed so the ball doesn't have to leave the penalty area from a goal kick is the ball not 'in play' once the goalkeeper has passed it to the defender and therefore it was a deliberate handball and a penalty?
I don't know the answer and it doesn't matter now as we won anyway but just curious.

Re: Am I missing something obvious?
We did pretty much exactly the same in the second half - Muric to Taylor.
Sensible option in both instances would be for the keeper to throw it across to the player taking the goal kick.

Re: Am I missing something obvious?
Maybe, can't say I noticed it but just curious as to when the ball is deemed to be 'in play'
Once the goalie had placed the ball on the ground shaping to take the goal kick then passed it to his team-mate I would have thought the goal-kick could be seen as having been taken at that point so the defender inside the area shouldn't have stopped it with his hand.

I thought the same, surely if the gk places the ball for a goal kick and its stationary(dead ball ready for restart) then kicks it to another player it becomes live so the player shouldnt be stopping it with his hand.

You could have done pretty much whatever you fancied with that ref.

Apologies to our Antipodean Friends
Re: Am I missing something obvious?
I thought the goalkeeper threw it to him rather than kick it.

Re: Am I missing something obvious?
In both incidents the goalie rolled it via his hand

Re: Am I missing something obvious?
As said the keeper rolled the ball to the defender, who then played it back to the keeper
Still doesn’t excuse the ridiculous amount he took to get the ball back into play though, despite the ref appearing to tell him numerous times

Funny how they sped up remarkably one we had scored!
Someone wrote above “you could get away with anything “
Well WBA certainly got away with some terrible fouls

Re: Am I missing something obvious?
The problem with this new rule is that it gives teams many more avenues to time waste.
Plus what is the point of the 6 second rule if the GK holds it for 20 seconds until the ref just waves his hands to get on with it?

Identical situation cropped up a few games back. Can’t remember thread title.

Re: Am I missing something obvious?
This was one of SD's time wasting devices. We used to mess about with Pope & two other players reckoning we were doing something for about 30 seconds, then Pope would shake his head, wave the other two up the field, and welly it as usual.

Hmm, I don't know I thought he'd kicked it (I had a few sherbets before the game and my eyesight isn't the best so I may be remembering it wrong

Either way, the defender definitely stoopped down and stopped the ball with his hand

Re: Am I missing something obvious?
Definitely rolled it. We do it a lot, my heart went in my mouth against someone recently at an away game (possibly Swansea) when Muric looked to kick the ball, then put his hand on it, then rolled it across to THB who then also put his hand on it before he passed it back to Muric for him to pass it out of the 18 yard box. Sooner a later a referee is going to end up giving a penalty or FK.Vintage Claret wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 9:35 pmHmm, I don't know I thought he'd kicked it (I had a few sherbets before the game and my eyesight isn't the best so I may be remembering it wrong)
