I thought he was decent, but the balance isn't quite right to fit him into this team.

As a partner to Cork in a double pivot, suspect he'd grow into a very good player. But he and Cullen are similar in stature and whilst Cullen is more of a ball player, they don't look to me a natural combination because they operate in similar areas. Nor for that matter is Brownhill and Bastien, because they are both industrious supporting players rather than creative prompters.

So the balance in that 3 wasn't quite right last night, which is absolutely no criticism of Bastien - he did fine on his own terms. It's just he was duplicating a bit of Cullen and a bit of Brownhill, and so there were some ingredients Cork normally brings to the mix (winning headers, screening the centre backs, bit of extra quality on the ball and calmness assertiveness on the ball) that were missing.

Ultimately, Rodriguez as an advanced 10 redressed that balance and we looked much better as a result.
I like Bastien. I could see him slotting into a Premier League team. Composed, good technique and keeps it simple. Nothing spectacular but a tidy player.

From tv and watching full match replay this morning;
Muric 8 possibly our best midfielder last night
Roberts 7 solid performance
Beyer 7 such a good player, hope to see him stay at Burnley for a long time
Taylor 7 played well, out of position, we missed THB’s passes out of defence
Bastien 6 a bit slow moving the ball but showed potential
Cullen 8 worked hard with plenty of skill
Brownhill 6 solid but not great
Tella 8 the goal machine
Barnes 7 good in bits
Zaroury 8* an other classic wing display

Rodriguez 7 much more composed than Barnes
Benson 6 didn’t dazzle as much as usual

Twine 10 I know it doesn’t count but he deserved a mention.

From the television..

Muric 7 - did well with passing. Not to spark an argument but did come out and grab the ball/was fouled for their disallowed goal.
Roberts 7 - solid
Beyer 7 - solid
Taylor 7- again, not to start an argument but was shoved for their 1st goal.
Maatsen 8 - fantastic
Cullen 8 - quietly great
Bastien 7 - had big shoes to fill but i think did very well, didn't look out of place. as much as I like cork, not sure how much he has left in the tank.
Tella 8 - pace drove them nuts... fantastic finish for the goal
Brownhill 7- solid
Zaroury 9.5 - probably the best game he had all year... even when then double-teamed him, manage to get by multiple players. i think we can keep him for rest of year and probably next year as well.
Barnes 8 - worked hard, caused them fits

Rodriguez 7 - good sub... had some good header clearances
Benson 7 - he was limping bad... not sure what the long term will be for him
twine - 9 for that free kick alone. Thank god we didn't have to see brownhill sky it over the crossbar. Not sure if he starts, but hopefully gets some game time.

the big thing we have is DEPTH. Quality subs who can come in and make a difference.

Anyone giving Muric less than 8 is being harsh based on his performance last night (NOT PREVIOUS PERFORMANCES). His game management and distribution was incredible, and he made a good save at a crucial point.
No chance with the goal, but slightly lucky with the disallowed goal - (though it was a foul).
And yet we have a poster(a couple above) giving him a 5!!
Dear oh dear .......

I’m going to have to rewatch the game. I deliberately had focus on Bastien. I found him one-paced (casual), often not in a good position to receive the ball that added any benefit, and to that last point I felt he was often by-passed by his team-mates. I just felt he had nowhere near the energy of the rest of the team. Maybe I’d had a sherbet too many or was overly-seeking weakness

Some thoughts:

Evening started off weirdly: on walking into the Boot bumped into a West Brom Fan who was exiting to the chorus of (W)anchor (W)anchor. No idea what he had done but anyway whatever it was/wasn't he was sent packing.

First 15 mins they looked good after that 1 way traffic albeit I think we had a bit of luck to get the 3 points but a fully deserved bit of luck.

Good away support again and great atmosphere.

Ref looked dreadful to the naked eye but subsequent comment suggests may not be as bad as first believed....

I thought we may have slipped up on this one because they looked good at their place and they are very solid disciplined outfit but overall offered less than I expected.

Muric 8 - (5 for distribution and 3 for general goalkeeping) - important to the team but always looks a little wobbly for the faint hearted.
Roberts 7 - solid
Beyer 7 - solid
Taylor 7- Not great for the first goal. Maybe he was pushed but looked a bit weak to me. Also his distribution is less positive than TBH but minor quibbles on an otherwise solid performance.
Maatsen 8 - One or two moments of weak defending but nonetheless he was great otherwise.
Cullen 8 - I like this player so ....
Bastien 7 - Steady away. I think there is a real player here so disappointed that he hasn't kicked on. There is time yet.
Tella 8 - fantastic finish and a committed impressive performance.
Brownhill 7- solid
Zaroury 8 - Another solid performance
Barnes 7 - worked hard and caused problems

Rodriguez 7 - quietly impressive as usual
Benson n/a - kicked when he first came on and went off soon after
twine - Not on for long enough to score but he did score that free kick and my feeling is everyone in the ground just knew it was going in. It was just written in the stars

Muric 8 Close to MoM for me
Roberts 7
Beyer 7
Taylor 7
Maatsen 7 Got frustrated with his over hit passes down the line, just to often or would have been higher
Cullen 9 MoM Super kicking the ground lol
Bastien 7 Covered very well for JC, IMO of course
Tella 7
Brownhill 7
Zaroury 8
Barnes 7 VK knew to pick the right person to begin for this one :)

Rodriguez 7
Benson 6 Quick injury took its toll

Twine (10 for the few minutes) Been waiting to see him, certainly didn't disappoint :)

Muric 6 Great distribution just wish he commanded his six yard box better
Roberts 7 Steady
Beyer 7 Good
Taylor 7 Good
Maatsen 7 Steady
Cullen 9 MoM does so much good work
Bastien 6 Did ok
Tella 7 Poor first touch but great strike for his goal
Brownhill 7 Good work rate (just glad Twine was on to take the free kick)
Zouroury 8 Quiet first half but much better second half
Barnes 7 Thought he lead the line well today

Rodriguez 7 Lively when he came on and defended well
Benson 5 Took a knock early

Started the game slowly but grew into it as the match went on and second half we got stronger and stronger to get a deserved win. To see Twine has been a long time coming but worth the wait just to see that free kick nestle in the top corner let’s it’s one of many to come from him
