Fascinated to learn from the denizens of UTC that the most listened to radio station in the country is ‘finished’.

Re: Ken Bruce Sacked
Sounds like the BBC are cutting off their nose to spite their face, I totally understand & get the idea that times move on & as that happens you need to respond accordingly but it's dismissing the notion that DJs can't adapt to the times & move with them accordingly. It stinks of ageism to a degree & not being innovative in-house with what's already there.Somethingfishy wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 6:08 pmWell indeed. That progression won't neccessarily be made as DAB has created so much choice. It makes this entire argument pure folly. If a Ken Bruce fan then I'm sure it's easy enough to follow him and retune to Greatest Hits.
The BBC just wants to keep the core demographics for each of its stations and that includes DJs that are relevant to that demographic. As much as I admire Ken Bruce as a broadcaster he increasingly was outside the demographic as the years passed by. It was only a matter of time. The same will apply to most other DJs..if any of them last as long.
At some point..and if he stays long enough then Jordan North will be deemed too irrelevant for Radio 1 and he moves on.
I don't understand the rage over it.

Re: Ken Bruce Sacked
Most listened to show in Europe apparently.
Radio 2 listenership dropped by 580,000 recently. Whilst I understand that is far from “finished”, it’s hardly good news for the station is it?
Bound to lose more when KB moves, but let’s be honest, Vernon is actually a very good presenter to be fair.
KB may well be in his seventies, but that doesn’t come across in his presenting. He’s actually very good for an old guy. Quite a lot of decent ex BBC presenters on GHR. I just wish the play list was not so limited and repetitive.

This seems to be the problem with some of the “niche” stations. A couple of hours of Absolute 80’s, I’ll guarantee you will hear Come on Eileen, Don’t you want me baby, Karma Chameleon, and I just called to say I love you.bobinho wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 12:42 amMost listened to show in Europe apparently.

Re: Ken Bruce Sacked
Yeah I hear that. Absolute make such a big song and dance about their “no repeat guarantee” but in reality, it just doesn’t work well enough. Sure we don’t hear the same song twice during the working day and that’s great, but we’ll hear ‘em all again tomorrow, just in a different order. The “no repeat guarantee” should last the week -possibly longer.Claretitus wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 10:22 amThis seems to be the problem with some of the “niche” stations. Re: Ken Bruce Sacked
Ken Bruce is great and he doesn’t seem the age he is even though he’s been on air for ages. Kay at least plays good music but he’s annoying. Zoe Ball is annoying and too excitable and Scott Mills just sounds desperate to me. Can’t believe he’s made it as a DJ. Think it will lose a lot of listeners. Having said this I’d prefer to listen to any of them instead of that Nihal on Radio 5 in the afternoon. Unbearable.

Scott Mills is a good DJ - he had a very loyal and popular following on R1 - but I just don’t think he’s suited to R2. Steve Wright was long overdue a potting but I think they could’ve made a different choice. Maybe Vernon Kay could’ve been chosen for that show or even somebody like Craig Charles. As it is, while Ken B could’ve been handled better, I do think Kay is a great choice as replacement. A straight, white man too, which should make the OP happy.

Not a fan of Vernon Kay but to me it's all about "modernising" R2, which leaves so many people out in the cold. I consider it clear, out and out ageism. These older people have paid their money and outlived their usefulness, so bullworkers to them!Swizzlestick wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 11:07 amScott Mills is a good DJ - he had a very loyal and popular following on R1 - but I just don’t think he’s suited to R2. He chose to leave to take a big payday at commercial radio. The violin shouldn't be too large on this occasion. Elaine Paige, Tony Blackburn and Bob Harris all have shows on Radio 2 and are all older than Ken Bruce.basil6345789 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 03, 2023 10:34 amNot a fan of Vernon Kay but to me it's all about "modernising" R2, which leaves so many people out in the cold. How's about a song - In The Year 2525 ?
Re: Ken Bruce Sacked
Scott Mills in the afternoon is an absolute joke. He plays all the crap from the late 90's and 00's. I heard 2unlimited, Corona, and Beyonce Single lads one after another. Coupled with the way he trys talking like a teenager but just sounds like an embarrassing teacher trying to be down with the kids. Phrase like "off of" instead of just "off", and saying then going to the other extreme of missing the word 'of' after the word 'because '. For example "I didn't go o holiday because Lockdown". So annoying. Won't be listening again. The guys a tit.

Re: Ken Bruce Sacked
When Ken has gone, and the latest list of listening figures are announced, it will be interesting to see if the controller of Radio 2 is hauled in and asked “ just WTF is happening here”? Paying all the current bunch of clowns, fortunes, to host shows that no one is listening to. Meanwhile, the commercial stations continue to grow. Public funded BBC continues to show us all it is no longer fit for purpose.

Re: Ken Bruce Sacked
Scott Mills is dire, when he stood in and did Popmaster it was cringeworthy listening to the pauses and lack of interaction with the contestant. And the "Off of" is so irritating. Here's Bob off of Norwich. It's Bob from Norwich you pillock.groove wrote: ↑Fri Mar 03, 2023 10:57 amScott Mills in the afternoon is an absolute joke. Re: Ken Bruce Sacked
Scott Mills is s**t, absolutely no argument here
Linking Radio 2 losing a DJ to a commercial rival to the BBC not being "fit for purpose" is just ridiculous though

Just listened to his last show and despite the mock rage expressed at the BBC, largely politically driven admittedly, widely on here, Bruce signed off stating that the BBC is the finest broadcasting organisation in the world.

The people who don't like the BBC don't like it because it does its best to be balanced.
It's never anyone in the centre who whinges about it, only those very firmly on the left or right politically, and that says everything.
When you're used to your own echo chamber, it's hard to accept most of the world doesn't agree with you.

I'm OK with the BBC as long as they don't get rid of Tony Blackburn. Love his 60's and golden hour shows.Falcon wrote: ↑Fri Mar 03, 2023 12:53 pmThe people who don't like the BBC don't like it because it does its best to be balanced.

Bring back Radio Caroline North, Bob Stewart et al, and no playlist (apart from the Major Minor-sponsored shows). If you're not following me, you probably weren't born until the 70s
