Re: weghorst
We certainly can't afford a striker who doesnt score goals.
The last season in the PL with misfiring Wood, Barnes, J-Rod and eventually Weghorst himself proved that not enough goals = relegation.

Re: weghorst
One of the main reasons United have improved this season is because Martial has hardly played.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 11:20 amHe’s playing for United as they didn’t have a penny to scratch their arse with.
He’s only playing because of injuries.
There are literally pundits saying he is the worst striker they have had. Their fan base have mocked him since his first game. He will feature until martial is fit then he will be dropped and never play for them again.
I don’t think Weghorst is a United player either but he’s better for the team than Martial - and he’s a fraction of the cost too with Martial on £250k per week.

It is wise to be careful when you read what some fans put on the internet as pass it off as the whole fan base. Imagine an outsider reading virtually all your posts on here then describing the whole of Burnley's fan base being like this. We would be the biggest laughing stock in football.

Re: weghorst
I think the truth lies between two stools tbh
Are Utd a better team with Weghorst in it? - Yes, however the previous two number 9's in Ronaldo and Martial are two of the laziest footballers ever without the ball.
Remember how well Utd were doing before they re-signed Ronaldo? Put Kane in that Utd team and they become title contenders.

Re: weghorst
It’s not crucial if your 2 wide forwards are getting 15+ goals each though. Even more so if your fullbacks can chip in with a few (see my earlier post in Liverpool over the last 3 years)
Re: weghorst
It's not so important in this team though. Pre-season there were predictions we'd struggle because we didn't have a goalscorer (and arguably still don't) and we've scored the most goals in the league.
Re: weghorst
He's doing a steady enough job at United, for a last minute, "need a body in" loan signing. Some of our fans just want any excuse to have a go at him.

Re: weghorst
It also seems unlikely that we'll be ten points clear at the top of the PL, this time next season, which is why it's irrelevant to suggest that because we've scored a hatful in the poor quality championship without a striker (although J-rod wasn't doing too badly pre injury), that we won't need a goal scorer in the PL.

Re: weghorst
Well Erik ten Hag keeps picking him so he is proving his worth to them. It's reported he is very well liked in the dressing room. I do get the impression that the players seem reluctant to play him in when they are attacking although Rashford does try to find him. He presses really well, works really hard and covers a lot of ground. He is good at laying the ball off and is very adept with one touch passes and flicks to his teammates and in addition he often takes the ball off the opposition. His heading is weaker than you think it would be and he does appear to be much slower when first moving for a ball though he covers the ground in distance more than it would appear from his speed. I actually think he would fit our system very well in the PL given he would not play as an out an out striker but in a similar vein to the way Barnes and Jay Rod play for us at present.
At the moment he looks a better bet than either Obafemi or Foster though I am sure both will improve a lot by next season however will either Obafemi or Foster be good enough for the PL next season ?

Re: weghorst
just a reminder he played and scored 2 against the World Champions not so long ago. Weghorst struggled for us because he were utterly diabolical, if you can't see what he's brought to Man Utd then I don't know what to tell you. ETH dropped him deep because it opens up half a pitch of space for Antony, Rashford, Sancho etc to run into - it's a tactic that clearly works. Do you honestly think that ETH given how well he has handled all the situations at Utd would have signed him and played him in every game because he's crap ? Thought not.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 8:27 amHaha ok,
How anyone on this planet can say Weghorst is a “quality footballer” is beyond me. He’s a good grafter but lacks key attributes to be a quality footballer. He can’t score and is too slow to be a striker in English football. That’s why ETH has dropped him deep.
Just a reminder, Rashford only scored 5 goals last season - all about the system and the team
