Possession isn't what people think it is; it's just the number of passes on each team during the match, divided by the total number of passes in the game.
I forget which year it changed from time holding the ball as a % of game time, but yeah it means naff all.
We had low & under Dyche for example, because we tended to play more direct

Enough to win, that's all we need
We've seen plenty of clubs attempt to play possession based football and end up struggling or getting relegated

Significantly up from last time in the PL. Suspect it will range 45% -55% from game to game

When Leeds went up with a possession-heavy system under Bielsa I remember a lot of teams, including some of the big guns like Man City, actively letting them have the ball and looking to spring a trap when they overcommitted. It wouldn’t surprise me if quite a lot of teams let us play keep-ball and look to sucker punch us. It’s very hard to score in the PL when the opposition is set in formation.

Hope we do as well as Leeds did that season scoring 59 goals and finishing 9th!Rileybobs wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 11:53 amWhen Leeds went up with a possession-heavy system under Bielsa I remember a lot of teams, including some of the big guns like Man City, actively letting them have the ball and looking to spring a trap when they overcommitted. We once beat Liverpool 2 - 0 with 18% possession so not too fussed about it.

Absolutely. I think we'd all take some beatings off the big guys (we'll probably get those whatever we do) if we manage to get close to what Leeds did in their first season.
We could do with a bit more on the recruitment side before we think about that though. Signings like Raphinha and Rodrigo seem a little way off our present position of having bids rejected for Clarke and Flemming!

Quite, In 20/21 and 21/22 Leeds spent £180 million but could easily have been relegated in 21/22 instead of us after a shocking season.ksrclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 12:02 pmAbsolutely. They sold Philips and Raphina at the end of 21/22 and spent another £145 million. In those 3 years Leeds had a gross spend of over £300 million and a net spend more than the cost of Burnley.
You have to have deep pockets to play like Bielsa in the PL.
