The very, very haunting "The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

Worth reading the story about this tragedy if you're remotely interested.

A bit of a shock knew he wasn't in the best of health.
A supremely talented musician, singer and songwriter.
If you could read my mind is one of my all time favourites.

RIP Gordon

I've not listened to his music lately nor heard much about him but have very fond memories of some of his songs from sing-alongs at various beery folk clubs in late 1960s/early 1970s. I still remember all the words to "Early mornin' rain".

Thanks for the songs (and guitar playing) Gordon Lightfoot, RIP.

me too. "If you could read my mind" was so ripe for those hormone and brain-growing years. That song would take me places..... not sure where that was, but it was a place

Brilliantly crafted song, possibly the most descriptive song ever written, the backing music adds to the experience of 'being there'. One of the rights of spring in Toronto was Lightfoots' annual concerts at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto, which he performed until a couple years ago.

A little backgound about the ships sailing in the Great Lakes for those who may be interested. The Welland canal system connecting lakes Erie and Ontario is an engineering marvel, those massive 'lakers', as they're known, are a tight fit in the locks, barely a couple of feet separate the ships from the canal walls.

Below is a video showing a Laker navigating the Welland Canal system.

For those of us of a certain age, he was an important part of our music scene.
Some wonderful songs mentioned already.
Daylight Katy was one of my favourites.
RIP, Gordon

I think I have a listen to this about once every few weeks. As you say a truly haunting account of a real tragedy.
Superior, it’s said, never gives up her dead when the winds of November come early.
A sad loss to music.

Agree Steve. I’m just about to dig out my vinyl album Sundown. Cathy Smith inspired him (amongst other things ;) ) to write this song.
