A lot of talk about Scott Twine.

Post by Darnhill Claret » Wed May 24, 2023 10:15 pm

Especially about his physical size.

In my mind he compares very favourably, physically, with Enciso at Brighton.

I'm also thinking at similar stages in their physical development. Messi is a man. Twine and Enciso still have some physical development to go.

If he’s technically good enough, this talk about his physique is nonsense.

Loads of small gifted players playing in the premier league.

He has physically developed a lot in the second half of the season

It has a lot more to it than just sheer size.
Many slight footballers are successful, but they have an inner strength, and a low centre of gravity, which makes them hard to knock off the ball.
People are just pointing out that, that inner strength is something he needs to work on. He improved greatly at the end of the season, so no doubt it is something VK has already identified.

Brian Flynn played in a much rougher era than nowadays. Size helps, but lack of it can be overcome.

The comparison isn’t similar.

Twine isn’t going to beat a man in the prem like Enciso. He’s not quick enough or has that trickyness in his locker.

I just honestly think he’s going to be dominated but much bigger and quicker athletes. I would be very surprised if he’s not loaned out.

When you look at our current squad we have quite a few smaller, lighter players
Twine, Cullen, Brownhill, Zaroury and Benson, plus Maatsen and Tella if they comes back
Can't think of many Premier League sides who play with so many of that stature

When you think about it we're just a load of crap aren't we?

Might as well just write off next season and play I-spy instead.

Cullen has spent a year controlling midfields against some absolute animals, he may not be tall but he’s plenty strong enough.

Never saw Brownhill’s stature as an issue in any previous premier league season.

Wouldn’t describe Tella or Zaroury as small either.

When you then come to the more creative players, the Premier league is full of players that are small in stature but get along just fine. The best example perhaps being Bernardo Silva who just a week ago was running rings round Real Madrid.

He was a pretty solid, powerful unit though. Not much similar to Twine I don't think, (Bremner was 4 or 5 inches shorter), but there have been plenty of PL footballers with a similar physique to Twine.

Somewhere in the middle on this but the starting point is its reductive to boil this down to stature. Its about strength. Plenty of small players have the strength and skill to make it an advantage. Likewise plenty of players who are plenty big enough lack a bit of core strength so get bullied a bit.

Twine isn't especially small and was strong enough to pass in the Championship. But he didn't stand out physically and given the increased physicality of the Premier League its reasonable to wonder if he might need a bit of a conditioning programme to make the grade. That's all.

Spot on - it's more about strength, skill and pace next year - whoever starts for us

And to compare him with Enciso, a current international with Paraguay, is not fair to the Scott himself - Brighton payed £11m + for him
He was likened last week on here to James Ward Prowse

He will find his level given time

What's funny about this thread is that nobody compared Twine with Enciso as a player, yet so desperate to write our players off are the usual suspects, that they go in two footed without reading the question properly.

He probably will bulk up a little over the summer, but he will definitely be in and around the team next year.

He's our Ward-Prowse!

Similarly your shout about Weghorst was shocking.

It’s all about opinions. I just can’t see a guy that’s barely featured at championship level getting game time in the prem.

I don’t think it benefits him or us for Twine to be around the squad. If we think he’s got potential he needs to be playing week in week out at this point of his career

Twine is more a Paul Scholes type player finding space in and around the box and making late runs in there. If he can like people say bulk up either physically or mentally I think he has the capabilities to be a very good premiership player. The problem is we have only witnessed him against championship sides so only time will tell.

Kompany's comments don't make it sound like he'll be loaned out:

“I think he’ll be disappointed that the season is nearly coming to an end. I think the jump from League One in itself to the Championship is already itself a big jump.

“He’s had to build his body up, he’s had to deal with some setbacks and injuries and the team was flying, so it wasn’t like it was easy to get back in the team, and I think he’s finishing how we want him to finish, showing that he’s improved this season.

“Obviously he knows he’s preparing for another bigger jump next year, so I think he’s in the mode where if you finish strongly, I think he’ll feel confident for next season as well to be able to get to the levels he needs to be at, but in terms of the levels of talent there’s no doubt, he’s very talented.”

His style of play reminds me of Maddison from the bits I’ve seen. I think he’s improved his physicality this year particularly and he has the potential to do well in the prem for us, especially with a bit more space which I think he’ll get

Time will tell but I’m not sure what to think of them comments.

At his age I just don’t see why we would want him to spend the majority of his time potentially not even on the bench. He needs minutes if we do think he’s a talented lad.

Bellamy said in a recent interview that Scott is the nearest thing he's seen to Gianfranco Zola, who he knows well having played with him at Newcastle.
