Lightweight breathable waterproof?

I'm after a waterproof jacket/cagoule. It has to be breathable (Gore-Tex?) and be able to pack away into a small rucksack. Also, as lightweight as possible and preferably under £200?

There are loads out there, but trying to find one that hits all those notes, while being able to pack away into a pocket or small rucksack, seems to be a bit of a challenge.

I play golf and own a footjoy jacket as mentioned. Yes it's not a specialist walking jacket, but meets all the criteria you've mentioned.

I've used it loads in horrific weather and it's been 100% waterproof every time..

As Lancaster says, craghoppers make some good stuff.

After years in HM forces, and being out in all conditions and all weathers, I wouldn’t consider anything other than Gore-Tex to do the job. Some stuff close to it, but nowts beaten it for me over the years.

My one (which I haven't tested in the Lakes in winter, but realistically I'm not going to go up there in winter!) is made from 40 recycled plastic bottles and cost me £40 from craghoppers

It all depends on just how full on you think the weather will be and how likely it is you are going to be stuck in it

You can easily get sucked into paying over the odds for fashionable names but by & large, makes such as craghoppers & regetta & mountain warehouse etc do the job, you don't need to spend big bucks on the arcteryx, Rab & mountain equipment etc.

Depends how extreme you're going. Having tested waterproofs in some ridiculous areas, the ones that have stood up best are - Rab's waterproof jackets, and Sunderland's waterproof trousers. Both breathable, and both stood up to the most prolonged, torrential rain you would ever see.

Look under the label even the expensive gear - made in china, Pakistan or Bangladesh.

It doesnt get wetter and wilder than autumn/winter where I live on the Scillies and I'm outdoors and on boats half my life.

I've got a pile of stuff from your regatta /craghopper gear through to your rabs and beyond, and in all honesty there's bugger all difference.

But in fairness, once it turns really cold I swear by Musto jackets.

A bit more info. I just want a small jacket that can fit inside a small rucksack. Basically, for the warmer months when hitting heavy showers while out on the hills. I have different kit for the colder months - various fleeces, depending on how cold it is, and a good Berghaus jacket to slip over the fleece.

I'm after a good breathable 'packaway' cagoule type jacket that you can compress as small as possible. I'm struggling to find one that folds up tiny and is very lightweight, and also has Gore-Tex breathability. You might as well use a plastic bin liner is it's not breathable.

I'd look more into the cycling stuff than the hiking stuff they tend to be lighter & more packable.

I have a Gore cycling jacket that packs up small. It’s great for breathabilty. I think it’s gore-tex paclite. No hood though. I’ve found when running little gets rid of moisture quick enough but you do dry out underneath faster.

Just to add. Cycling jackets are close fitting so you might not fit a decent sized thermal layer underneath.

Out for prolonged spells, and have had leaks in Regatta gear, Craghopper trousers that are breathable haven't lasted in proloned rains either. Last year I was in the canadian rain forest photograping bears - we had enough rain for the river level to rise by about 5 feet in 8 hours. I was the only person to return to the boat totally dry - Rab and Sunderlands stood the test of it where everything else failed.

Have a look at the Montane Duality - gore Tex, insulated, but very light. I got one a few weeks ago on offer for 120
