Women's world cup

Post by aggi » Thu Aug 03, 2023 12:40 pm

Germany currently on course to go out which would be quite the upset. Still 10 minutes to go though

One of my biggest struggles with women’s football is knowing who’s good and who isn’t. I genuinely don’t think I’ve got the brain capacity to learn it all. It’s not just women’s football though, I sometimes watch other sports and think I’d enjoy it but just don’t want to learn about all the players/history/legends etc.

I turned Germany game on and thought Korea are doing well but are they? Or are they the favourites

Germany going out would be a huge shock, and definitely make an 'easier' route to the final on paper for England as they were on our side of the draw.

Germany are one of the top teams. I think (although I'm not sure) that Korea are OK but nothing special.

Real end-to-end stuff. Germany getting very physical.

Probably very easy to fall into the trap of thinking good men's team = good women's team. I think it's probably fairly accurate in most cases but there will be some anomalies; USA dominating the women's game for so long being the obvious one.

several big upsets with fancied teams going home from group stages! USA also not doing great but going through and still one of the favorites.

Been some excellent football, however there's been some very frustrating games and you can tell it's still developing in reality, but so much better than a few years ago, looking forward to the knock out games.

USA have got a tough match against Sweden next. Unless they drastically improve I think they could be going out.

Yep. USA out on penalties. Lots of favourites getting knocked out.

Sweden v Japan will be a tough one to call.

I thought exactly that but six months ago I got into boxing without really knowing who all the current boxers were, and now I’m caught up. If the genuine interest is there you’ll catch up with all the names. If you have to force yourself to be interested it’s a lot harder

Was it shown over? I didn't have time to hang around for replays. Live I thought she’d saved it.
The lino was stood on the goalline inside the 6yd box. Why didn’t she give it.

It crossed the line by about 3mm.

Really enjoy watching high level women’s matches on the tv.Amazing ability, both technically & physicality, and I forget the gender & just watch good football & the drama that competitions bring.I was born in 1946 & women playing football was definitely a no-no but why should a game that is probably the best in the world have been denied to themfor so long? They are all professional players now & the teams are all capable of beating each other. Come on England!

Japan look the best all round footballing side in the competition, but if there's one side they wouldn't want to have matched up with, it's Sweden, who are dominant just where japan look weakest - defending corners and crosses into the box.
And given that the winner will then be up against netherlands, (unless they manage to lose to Spain), that will be a semi final that will probably be more closely fought than the final.
As posted above, the bottom half of the draw is rubbish by comparison.
If Sweden win the thing, then they will likely have eliminated usa, japan, netherlands, France in the knock out stages. Basically, everyone that is good. They'll certainly deserve it.

Netherlands out to Spain (at a kickoff time that was clearly anticipating the USA playing in that match).

With the way they have been playing I'd have tipped the Netherlands to win but sounds like Spain were the better team.

Japan 1 down and struggling against Sweden at the moment.

Think the Lionesses have a good chance with a lot of the big nations going out. Haven’t played their best football so far but are managing to win when not playing well. A game against Colombia tomorrow morning you’d fancy us to win, then hopefully into the semis.

Is it just me or did anyone else see the VAR decision to award Japan a penalty as yet another which seemed to be made with a view to making the game closer/more exciting rather than being correct.
