Things that make you happy in football

Post by 4:20 » Thu Oct 05, 2023 11:22 am

Watching the Newcastle game last night and I think it was after the 3rd goal, the camera cuts to the crowd and everyone's celebrating and there's a dad with his son in his arms jumping up and down, looking at each other going "yeahhhh!". They were so happy in the moment. Always gets me does that, seeing a parent holding their child and celebrating a goal/win.

Last season was especially good for us with late goals to win the game. Myself and my wife, I’m in my late 60s (the wife’s 70) jumping up and down ( well as best we could anyway) like a teenagers, had our son been there he would have been embarrassed, anyway we enjoyed it. Any goal for us though that wins the game makes me really happy.

Some real quality play, perhaps leading to a goal or good chance, or good defending too.

From Burnley especially but I can appreciate it from any side.

Going away and riding off back home with 3 points. Something of the medieval pillager about it, it conjures up almost a primal sensation

I love seeing clubs win something who historically have suffered over the years. Probably because it reminds me of us a bit.

Like Hibs winning the Scottish cup final in 2016 after 114 years for example

One win like that is worth 5 premier leagues that the big boys win

The camaraderie in the away end - especially if we win.
As JLR81 said -wholehearted, committed players.

Scoring just after the opposition thought they had nicked a draw. The atmosphere at Luton when Jacob scored was unbelievable

Intriguing teams in preliminary rounds. Give me a The New Saints - Qarabag FK any day of the week.

There’s often more intrigue in the pool games.

Walking up the stairs from the concourse to the pitch a minute or two before kick off and seeing a packed Turf Moor in full voice.

Absolutely magical.

For me it's got to be when we score. Especially an important goal, like against Blackburn for example. It's a strange feeling when you think about it. Its almost orgasmic. You kind of lose yourself for a few moments as a primeval surge of energy races through your body. It's utter joy mixed with relief, and comes out aggressively because it's that powerful. That "YESSSSSSS". Fists clenched punching the air. Superb.

Seeing kids full of emotion, good or bad.

Shows that their dads have given them the lecture about the "Burnley" way and it means something to the kids already.

There's hope for the future when kids care so much about Burnley

When the opposition score and then you get a goal about a minute later to go back in front. Nice

Seeing the ball hit the back of the net knowing you can’t celebrate for at least 3 minutes while the VAR check takes place
Watching an opposition player fling himself to the floor in our penalty area knowing the ref is desperate to point to the spot after minimal contact
That feeling you get just before kick off against City knowing what lies ahead
The pride you get being in the bottom mini league
Oh wait

Anything achieved by Burnley really.

But the sudden release of raw emotion and delight, captured by the cameras as a crowd celebrate their team's goal is simply the sensation that raises the hair on the back of my neck. Except if it's a goal against Burnley of course, lol

Am I a bad person or is it not just me who derives joy from other teams losing when they are the teams my non-Claret friends support ?
Schadenfreude can be a wonderful thing and a great comfort .
