Team v Arsenal

Post by FCBurnley » Thu Nov 09, 2023 8:02 pm

Muric
OShea Beyer Ekdal/ AD Taylor
Larsen Cork Cullen
Berge Brownhill
Rodriguez

No chance Muric will play but Arsenal will force Trafford into errors with their fast high press.

You’d better change your goalkeeper. Muric isn’t available.

I have assumed Ekdal not match fit yet; Cork either unfit or out of favour; and hope Obefomi can be brought into the squad as we may need him soon

Sorry NonNay, I think it's painfully clear the Berge - Cullen double pivot doesn't work... just not enough legs and pace in a two man midfield. And there are precious few goals in Amdouni / Redmond

I think I'd go for similar to FCBurnley:

--------------Trafford
Roberts O Shea Beyer Vitinho
----------Cork---Cullen----------
Brownhill-----Berg-----Kolosheo
---------------Jay Rod---------------

Need tracking back for the wingers, keep it tight, solid in the middle, height for our set plays and pace / goals on the bench for the last 25.

Hopefully that will keep it to a 3-0 defeat. 🤣

So many variations on team selection.
Really shows the depth of our squad, given time this is a really good set of players. Just how much time??

Given the type of game it is and how Arsenal play I reckon there’s a chance he goes for the same shape as vs City.

Is Muric available? Guess it doesn't matter either way

4-2-3-1 ish

----------Keeper
Roberts-Ekdal*-Beyer-Taylor
-------Cullen-Berge
--Amdouni-Tresor**-Koleosho
-----------Jay

Or

4-2-2-2
---------Keeper
Vitinho-Ekdal*-Beyer-Taylor
-------Cullen--Berge
----Brownhill------JBG
---Amdouni----Redmond

*O'Shea if Ekdal isn't ready
** Brownhill or Tresor really. Bit of a 'free hit' see what Tresor can do in his 'proper position'

-----------------------Trafford
Roberts ---- O'Shea (Ekdal if fit) ----Beyer ----Taylor
------------------------Berge
---------------Brownhill--------Gudmundsson
Odobert---------------------------------Koleosho
----------------------Amdouni

Play much more fast & direct. Arsenal will win the possession battle even if we try to play our possession style, their press will annihilate our backline if we try to tap it about. Get our best technical midfielder (Gudmundsson) and two most physical midfielders (Berge/Brownhill) in, was tempted to put Cullen in over Gudmundsson as DM but I think he's struggled, he'd be the bench option if the midfield isn't working.
Maximum frontline pace up top and on both flanks, let Amdouni drop deep similar to Firminio with the wingers overlapping ala Salah/Mane. Fullbacks pushing up to support when they can, with one of the 3 midfielders (probably Berge, or Cullen if picked) dropping back and the defence shifting to ensure there's cover if an attack breaks down. Play the channels, try to get in behind, take risks, accept that we'll never have 60% possession against Arsenal and adapt accordingly.

Still get battered like but if ever there was a game to attempt a more quick transition, direct/counter attacking team it's this one.

Back 4
4 narrow central midfielders
2 young wingers playing high to stop their full backs bombing on if possible. Plenty of energy.

We won't need a CF.

Sub as many youngsters on as possible to give them a taste of playing at these big grounds.

Plenty of long shots like we scored last year please.

Not mad on Berge defensively- and suspect we may be defending quite a lot! He can come on later and nab the winner.

Surely we have to play differently against possibly the best passing team in the division ..we need to be more physical perhaps .. I hope we don’t get trounced or it could be real knock to the teams confidence
