Shoot FFS Shoot!!!

Post by bfcjg » Sun May 19, 2024 8:57 pm

The concensus around me going of the comments and shouts during the game questioned why we don't actually shoot instead just looking for the tap in after a multitude of passes
My comment is just hit the F ing thing ( no kids around me or I'd edit myself) is this one of our downfalls ie not shooting enough,we have scored some great goals this season obviously not enough so why this reluctance to shoot? Is that why no Benson as he can score from outside the box ?

It's about maximising the opportunity to score, you'll see other teams do similar. We take it too far at times tho

However I have people around me screaming shoot and the ball is barely in the opposition's half, granted we don't have the best view, but jeez try using ya common sense

Not much point in shooting when you're on the edge of the box and there are 3 or 4 of the opposition between you and the goal.

It would take something special and believe me, we're not.

Lack of confidence, mainly. When players are feeling confident they shoot, when things are going badly they tend to over pass; and things have rarely gone so badly for any of them as it has this season

This obsession with screaming "shooooot" whenever a player is within about 35 yards of goal is a relatively new phenomenon. It happens in every game you watch, in person or on the TV now.

Is it because the fooballs are lighter than they used to be?

Most of the time, the player misses anyway!

I noticed today, for the first time, that Berge won’t shoot with his left foot. Uses it all the time in game play just won’t shoot with it. The problem being that several passes to him were perfect for striking but he declined the chance and passed it along. The forwards have deservedly taken grief over our lack of goals but the midfield and defence have barely chipped in at all.

It’s pretty basic stuff in football to know that your chance of scoring from a shot outside of the box is very low. Players know this.

I just do not understand our fans screaming “shhhhooooot” when we’re about 35 yards from goal. Just crazy.

As for todays chances, most were split second opportunities to shoot in bad positions. They either had no chance to get a shot off or it was unlikely to come to much.

So in short we shouldn’t shoot more from distance. The reason our fans get so wound up about it is because our build up playing the final third has been so poor this season that they understandably would rather see us get a shot off than lose possession with an over hit or miss-placed pass.

The answer to all of this is to improve our build up play, not shoot more from distance.

To be fair, you are expecting rather too much of a professional footballer on £40k a week to be able to use more than one of the two feet he was born with.

What I do know is that if you don't shoot then your chance of scoring is almost 0%

There was a bizarre moment when everyone shouted shoot at Esteve in the first half from 35 yards. He then obliged and blazed it miles over the bar. There was then a big round of applause. Slightly odd

Forest had 3 shots from outside the box today, we had 10.

So I don’t think shooting is the problem. Rather, that scoop over from Amdouni was, at about 10 yards out, the shortest shot we had all game. Carving out better chances near the goal is our achilles heel.

But Berge not shooting, that is definitely an issue, despite his wider class, albeit one we are not likely to have for long.

The team has had a chronic case of ‘wanttowalkitin-itis’ all season. Poor choices at crucial moments and a lack of confidence to have a pop when in range. Unless someone is taking an insane pop shot from a ludicrous angle, or being greedy as opposed to laying it on the plate for a tap-in, I’ll never ever have a problem with someone having a shot and going wide. It’s infuriating how often these lads are reluctant to try.

I can’t remember the specifics but I’m almost certain that Dyche’s whole successful defensive system was to encourage the opposition to shoot from distance

Why shoot when we can just tippy tappy the ball around the edge of box until we lose possession.

I can understand the frustration to be honest. Anywhere around the 18 yd box and the first thought HAS to be “is the shot on?”

35 yds out? Yeah ok, screaming shooooot then is pretty pointless. But the amount of opportunities to shoot from around the 18 yd box that we haven’t taken over the season have been ridiculous. If I didn’t know better, I’d suggest they’ve been told not to try until they are in touching distance of the 6 yd line.

Not watched today however our build up is so slow (irrelevant of the GK) it allows the opposition defence to be organised , then we are so ponderous around the box with no end product which leaves us exposed to a quick break. Most teams to have taken 3 points from TM haven’t had to get out of 1st gear, just turn up.

It’s not odd, and you don’t have to wonder too long before the penny drops… people were just happy that someone had a pop as opposed to trying to walk it into the 6yd box before having a do. It really is THAT simple.

To be fair it only looked about a foot over the bar from the CFS in line with the goal, had it dipped a little it would have nestled in the top corner. Unlike several attempts from our attacking players who struggled to actually move the ball forwards when attempting a shot. I say good on Esteve for having a crack at it.

It was miles over, and basically just wasted position. Do we really want our centre backs just coming forward and lashing shots from that distance?

It's not really an important moment. It just said a lot that people had resorted to giving that such a rapturous applause. A centre back shooting from there is never good.

I don't recall a single occasion where a centre back has scored a goal for us blasting one from 30 yards in the 20 years I've been watching. I just think it's massively wasteful.

Esteve's shot is no more wasteful than passing it left, right and backwards with zero end product, like we did for the other 90 mins. At least be had a go and came closer than some of the others.

Isn’t this the day, game 38, when Vincent Kompany as a centre back won a title by scoring a screamer from outside the box?

Esteve’s shot was good, on a foot or two over the corner, and he gets the vibe enough to know that a close long shot can lift the crowd and lift momentum. So good luck to him. That’s the only context where I have a problem with this tappy tappy football, it doesn’t try to whip the crowd up into a frenzy.

The BBC says we had 20 shots in total, so that's a nice symmetrical 10 inside, 10 outside. The shots from outside the box had a 10% scoring rate. The shots from inside the box ..... ;)

Don't think it was game 38 but yes that's one example. If we were to look statistically though I'm guessing the probability of those flying in the net are very very slim. I'm guessing you couldn't think of a single Burnley centre back doing it either?
I thought there must be one I was forgetting but nothings coming to mind.

I remember Berge having one serious attempt on goal all season and he scored from it. Absolute insanity that he didn't unleash further efforts, must be a contractual obligation to only have one shot per season.

Look at the goal today, a left foot dribbler that took a deflection, don't shoot, don't score.

Yep....if your 20 yards out just hit it hard and low...
Either you will score, miss the target, goalie saves it, blocked, or deflected into the net.
So that's a 2 in 5 chance...better than trying to walk it in.

Every time he got the ball around the D the ref was marking him! Get the f out of the way! Why don’t refs run diagonals anymore so they’re not under everyone’s feet. I remember that game with Gillette he did it as well.
