Only player in history to first be compared to Woods then later to Montgomerie and Van Der Velde.
Bottle job. Has been for many years. Despite winning many lesser tournaments.

Re: US OPEN
Absolute shocker from Rory missing those two three footers. I had money on him and thought this was finally going to be the one where he broke his Majors hoodoo.
The one consolation was Bryson winning. I have really enjoyed his YouTube channel and like him a lot. And he truly won it, that bunker shot on the 18th is one of the all-time great shots to win a Major.

I agree about Bryson - really grown to like him these last couple of years. Engages with the fans and crowd brilliantly and puts to shame the attitude and demeanour of the likes of Koepka and a few others.Oshkoshclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2024 2:21 amAbsolute shocker from Rory missing those two three footers. I backed Bryson at 22s a while ago. His performances in the majors this season have been outstanding. His odds for how he has played this year were way too long. He’s been brilliant this week and completely deserved to win.
As for Rory….this is going to hurt for sure but there is some nonsense on this thread about him. He played brilliantly this week - I watched a lot of it and he was also extremely unlucky on a number of occasions hitting great shots into impossibly greens only to see the ball run off. Yesterday he played a lot better than Bryson did from tee to green and up to near the end his putting was great. It’s so difficult to keep it going when you are in the lead - of course he missed 2 “easy” putts and the pressure got to him but for both putts he left himself on the tough side of the hole and I don’t think people watching have any idea how more difficult they were than they looked (though the commentators and Faldo in particular called how tricky both putts were)
Rory is ab unbelievable player - up there with one of the best of all time. Anyone who has seen him live will also see the pressure he is under with the crowds that follow him. Behind Tiger back in the day he gets more attention than anyone - and that’s because of how great a player he is. Like Bryson, Rory is also great with the fans.
Even though my money was on Bryson I wanted Rory to win - gutted for him but he’s still an unbelievable player and a great sportsman.

Re: US OPEN
Heartache for Rory - that putt on 16th was the gimmie that he'll kick himself over, the one on 18 had a pretty brutal break.
DeChambeau's bunker shot on the 18th was one of the best pressure shots of all time tbh and the fact that was the only time anyone got up and down from that bunker all weekend signifies just how great it was.... Though I'm not a fan of that 'armlock' extension on his putter.

Re: US OPEN
The commentator gave him the kiss of death by saying, He’s been rock solid on these all year before he missed the first 3 footer!!
Re: US OPEN
Maybe time for Rory to rethink having his mate on the bag. Can't help but think an experienced caddy who has been involved winning majors could help him out at the big moments like last night.

He remains my favourite golfer (Bryson may replace him) but he choked after showing great resilience all week.Big Vinny K wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2024 5:52 amI agree about Bryson - really grown to like him these last couple of years. The first putt in particular was one we would all be devastated to miss even in a club medal. 2.5 feet, slippery slope, just ram it in the back. We all do, even in high pressure competitions. The final putt was a bit slipperier but still a nervy choke. But it wasn’t just the putting, it was his club choice on two or three holes. He has a poor caddy, a desire for a “yes man”, and it leads to poor strategic choices at key times (like at Winged Foot and St Andrews where he was too conservative even when the feel of the tournament was that the trophy was getting away from him).
The sporting tragedy though was he deserved to win nonetheless. Bryson was flaying it all night and got good lie after good lie (until the 18th ironically), Rory got terrible luck on the par 5 10th where a possible eagle turned into a horrid unlucky bogey lie due to an unfair green. He then got unlucky with his lie on the par 3 and the 18th.
But even though the Gods weren’t with him he still had got it done. Until he choked, badly, akin to Montgomerie with his 7 iron.

I think the comparison to a club medal is just daft - not just the pressure situation but it is impossible to tell from the television how difficult and fast those greens are. You, me or not mere mortal will have ever played on greens anything like that - add the obvious factor or pressure on top and it’s not a situation any of us will ever experience.
Rory missed 2 short putts yesterday - Bryson missed at least 2 similarly short putts too. Every player was missing putts like that all week.
There’s a big argument he should not have took the driver out of the last - but the same could be said of Bryson.
It’s all too easy to use terms like choking and bottler for when Rory fails to win a major.
But the facts of the matter are that if you put Tiger to one side given realistically it will be nigh on impossible for him to compete again Rory has by far the best record in terms of PGA tournaments won ; prize money won ; world ranking time at no1 in last decade ; majors won and top 10 finishes in majors ; etc etc
If Rory is s bottler, choker etc what does that make everyone else. Look at the likes of Thomas, Spieth and many others - the so called next superstars. They struggle to make the cut in most majors now or even win a PGA event. Look at Tommy Fleetwood - never won a PGA event.
Winning majors is just very difficult.
He’ll be gutted - but he’s been gutted many times before. There is nobody in golf who does not feel the pressure when they are leading in a major - if there was they would have a better record than Rory…..and right now none of them do.

Re: US OPEN
Good article about Rory on the BBC now by the excellent Ian Carter. Sums up my thoughts perfectly.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/golf/articles/cj77gjl15j7o
We can debate if Rory has a mental weakness at the biggest moments, I don’t feel it is as simple as that but there is a fragility certainly. But as Carter says in the article, something dramatic has to change or it will be the same outcome. I have walked 18 holes with him on one of his major meltdowns, when he shot 80 with the other 3 rounds in the 60s, it is a despairing thing to witness it in the flesh.
I’ve been watching his psychology very closely for a very long time and, yes, I do believe he choked yesterday as I wrote above, but I also believe he was unlucky and deserved to win. Spieth, Koepka, DeChambeau etc choke at times too, but are, to be fair to them, lesser talents and not comparable.
