Euro 2024
Re: Euro 2024
You can't just go by the "there was contact and he fell down" rule, because both players made contact with each other and both players fell down. They can't both have a foul.
Re: Euro 2024
I thought it was a penalty as Armstrong was adjusting his body so he could get a shot away with his right foot. Without the contact he has a shot, simple as that. I don't put it in the same category as the Anthony Gordon ones for Newcastle for example. Gordon clearly puts himself in a position to get kicked so he can drop to the floor, I don't think Armstrong did that. The only argument against it being a penalty is Armstrong didn't strictly have control of the ball. Either way I think Scotland were on the end of a poor call last night.

Re: Euro 2024
By the way did you notice Armstrong grab the defender’s shirt? For me it wasn’t a peno as Armstrong initiated the contact. He didn’t appear that interested in going for the ball, it was good gamesmanship, I think Jamie Vardy was a pioneer of this technique. It can appear very convincing.

Whether Armstrong had control of the ball is NOT the only argument against it being a penalty.jlup1980 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2024 12:40 pmI thought it was a penalty as Armstrong was adjusting his body so he could get a shot away with his right foot. Can't think of anything more Southgate than to pick the same team. If he does make any changes it would probably be just the 1 and it would be Gallagher for TAA

What's with the last round of the group stage matches having multiple games in the same time slot?... Seems daft.

Always the case. Ensures teams don’t know the other group member’s results beforehand. The same as the final game of a domestic league season.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2024 2:31 pmWhat's with the last two days of group stage matches both being played at the same time btw? Seems daft.

Think it was West Germany and Austria who virtually fixed a game at a World Cup early 80s meaning someone else went out who had played earlier.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2024 2:31 pmWhat's with the last round of the group stage matches having multiple games in the same time slot?... Seems daft.

Sort of the same reason why the World Cup didn't go down to 3 team groups.

And this, in a nutshell, is why VAR will never work. One persons interpretation is different the next person. I'm dead against attackers initiating contact. As I said in my first post I don't see this incident in the same light as others. For example, the two Anthony Gordon got versus West Ham were a disgrace. It was quick thinking by the lad, but he basically saw that the West Ham defender was swinging his leg and purposely put his leg in the way. I genuinely think Armstrong was trying to get into a position to take a shot on his right foot. He's no need to move across for any other reason, he's ahead of the last man. It's clumsy by the Hungary defender and denied a clear, goal scoring opportunity.

Re: Euro 2024
Armstrongs first thought is to kick his leg backwards in an attempt to get tripped. For me this pretty much renders everything that happened afterwards irrelevant as he was off balance and not in control of the ball.jlup1980 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2024 3:16 pmAnd this, in a nutshell, is why VAR will never work. Re: Euro 2024
Nope because Trafford wasn't in control of the ball and went down like he'd been shot, Trafford wanted a foul.
Armstrong wanted to get his shot off with his right foot but a knee to the back of his knee made his leg buckle, clear foul.

Re: Euro 2024
If a defender runs in to the back of a striker as he's about to shoot it's a foul whether he intends to foul him or not but in this case there is clear contact with the back of Armstrong's knee which makes his leg buckle, pretty sure you've tapped a mate in the same spot in the past and watched him crumble and found it funny.dsr wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2024 12:23 pmArmstrong was moving away from the ball. the ball was on his right and he moved to the left.
The question is, what did the defender do wrong? He was running behind and to the left of Armstrong who shifted into his path. Is that sufficient to say that the defender deliberately tripped Armstrong? Remember that for it to be deliberate, the defender either has to intend to trip him, or else has to be making a deliberate action that results in tripping him. There is a school of thought, not shared by all, that just running back chasing the forward is not sufficient of an offence to be a foul; many people believe that the defender ought to be allowed to chase back and if the forward chooses to block him rather than to go for the ball, that's his own lookout.
His leg got took from him meaning he couldn't get his shot off, he stepped across the defender to shoot with his right foot

Re: Euro 2024
BBC believes Connor Gallagher has been chosen to replace TAA tomorrow.
So Jude and Foden will continue to play out of position (Jude playing behind 2 quick forwards at Madrid).
Safe to say I’m not looking forward to watching it.

I don’t understand this!
Croatia just made 30+ passes and the ball never left the grass. What a difference when players are willing to get into space against Englands 50/50 balls over the head of an opponent because they have no will to get into space.

Croatia score by putting a decent cross into the box. Why do teams insist on fannying about so much, Guardiola has alot to answer for.

Great thing that you can drink beer while watching from the stands. What a shame this great German tradition isn’t respected by fans from other countries, and looks like it will be banned. Also, why would you waste good beer by literally throwing it away?

I don’t rate Croatia but as it stands they are beating Italy and there’s every chance we could be beat tomorrow. That would mean both countries finish with 4 points.
Croatia would beat England if they were playing them tonight

Not sure why the ref blew before the kick off when there were 32 seconds left when Italy scored. It is meant to be “minimum of” not “maximum of”. Smells a bit of big team favouritism by the Dutch ref.

If we make it through to the quarters then it’s the winner of Switzerland or Italy
