All Ireland Hurling Final - The Clash of the Ash

Post by brunlea99 » Sun Jul 21, 2024 1:38 pm

BBC2 is showing live coverage of the All Ireland Hurling Final today between Cork and Clare. Worth a watch - fantastic, frantic, fast and tough sport !!!
I was in County Cork a couple of weeks ago with my wife's family, watching the Cork semi final in a pub - fantastic atmosphere with fans of both teams sat side by side drinking with no hint of trouble. The way it should be. Coverage starts at 3pm with the game starting a 3.30pm.

Struggled to get a seat in our usual breakfast haunt this morning, as it seems to have been tipped up to all the cork and Clare fans as a good place to go, and easy access to the dart to get to the game.

I’d never seen any hurling until I went to Cork in 2013 for our pre-season game. Really enjoy it.

A great watch.

Very rare these days to see a major Final played in a packed out stadium where all of the players, coaches, managers do not receive any remuneration as they are all amateurs doing it for the love of the sport.

Love of the sport…..whilst it’s billed as
An amateur sport because the counties don’t pay the player….. I’d be careful on the love of the game only line, as many get their sponsored car, preferential job treatment, money from endorsements etc…

I was fortunate to be there myself yesterday for the final. My partners family is from Cork and they have a few ex-players in the family so we tend to get around watching a few games in the championship each year.

It was a cagey affair from a fans perspective being there, lots of nail biting, but ebbed and flowed well. Some questionable officiating at times but overall Clare found that extra juice to turn the screw in the end. There some some consoling in the pub afterwards until the medicine kicked in.

Cork are like the Geordies, they travel in massive numbers for games. Dublin at 12 noon was just sea of red, they easily outnumbered Clare fans by a good 5/6 : 1. Theres no segregating of home and away, you get people mixing and drinking before, during and after the game, rarely (if ever) an issue, just as sport should be.

Unbelievable game and a shame that the conversation is about the referee with the final possession, it wasn't enough to put the forward off the shot. Hard to see one team lose as a neutral after giving everything and refreshing to see someone other than the Man City of hurling in the final. Back to club championships now!

Superb watch. The girlfriends family was on county Cork at the time, but I've yet to hear what it was like on the waterford border (or if she knew it was on).

Delighted to see someone different win it and thought Kelly was the deciding factor rather than the ref, but would not have objected to a replay.

Did it need that old man bleating on about the potato famine later on?
