Players that could have been more

Post by PremierLeagueClass » Thu Aug 01, 2024 6:41 pm

Not through poor attitude or injuries as such but players who were lacking in certain areas and supremely gifted in others.

To start off -

Robbie Blake - still many fans favourite Burnley player of all time (including mine), if he had the physical attributes to match his ability, how far could he have gone?

Glen Little - similar to Blake, what could he have been with pace?

Adrian Randell always looked as though he could step up if things just gelled that little bit more. In an era of pub players in our squad he had a sprinkling of quality.

Paul Smith - Bet he still curses every drain cover he sees

Come to think of it we don't half have a tradition of unlucky left wingers. Alan Moore, Robbie Brady.....

If Blake had had pace he would probably have never played for us.

Harry Redknapp said he was the best 15 year old footballer he's ever seen. So much talent.

I know it's the opposite to the point of the thread but what a career Kieran Trippier has made out of his strengths and despite some weaknesses.

Juke was the wrong place, wrong time. He's had a good career at Birmingham where he's a cult hero.

Danny Ings, his numerous knee injuries robbed him of what would have been a glittering international career IMHO.

Eagles if he had power and stamina (I think asthma might have been something to do with it).

Chaplow if he'd made the right career moves.

McCann but for injuries

No left foot for a start other than for standing on. If he was the reverse of that he’d be criticised for being all left foot but it never seems to be the case with right footers. Outstanding player though.

Richard Chaplow. I still think he had real potential to be a top midfielder if he'd of stayed with us for another season or so, here he was afforded time as he came through the ranks,as soon as he went to Southampton he was under pressure to justify the big fee. At the time it was rumoured it was all down to his agent ( Armstrong ??) engineering a good fee for himself as he was a relatively new agent having recently retired, the clients career came second.
Who knows but he was never the same.

Aidy lacked desire.

He told the story of being in the same dressing room as Matt Le Tissier after they’d both played for Rngland at, I think, under 18 level. He said there were two doors out with one of them marked for those with ambition and joked that he and Le Tiss left through different doors.

He lacked pace but had the ability to play at a higher level than where he spent most of his career.

He fits this thread perfectly.

Yeah, left footers who have no right foot are always “too one footed”. Was Beckham “too one footed” for doing everything with his right?

Once left a home night game quite early, legged it for a bus, got back to Nelson, got off the bus, walked into the Clayton arms, and Ady Randall (who was still on the pitch when I left) was sat there having a pint with a proper dolly bird…

Fastest he ever moved.

He didn’t move so fast for away games. More than once he missed the coach and he lived on Lyndhurst Road, a two minute walk from the Turf.

David Jones got that during Dyche’s first promotion season; Scott Arfield and Tripps were in that same team playing everything with the right.

Sat in the Park View early doors on match day, Adey came and sat with us and had a pint of Guinness.

'So you're not playing today?' we asked. 'Er, I dunno' was the answer.

He played.

Charlie Austin.

He got 18 goals in 35 appearances for QPR in a relegated team. That’s amazing

He decided to stay when they got relegated, got injured, and was never the same player. If he had moved to a bigger prem club the year before I’m convinced he would have played for England. Not many natural goalscorers like him.

Just look at his record before the injury. Scored nearly or over 1 in 2 from non-league to the prem

Jay Rod was flying before his bad injury. Played for England on the wing, which really didn’t help because he was never a winger, but he was deffo on the up before his injury

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion but not for me. He was horrendous. Couldn’t tackle or win any challengers, couldn’t take anyone on and always hit a rushed over hit 10
Yard pass to a teammate who was marked.

Pretty sure at one point Jones was the only fit senior CM that we had

Gets some undeserved stick from fans who can’t seem to recognise just how good he was for us and they keep trotting out the one footed comment

Wort Weghorst, if only he had self-belief, less humble and was more selfish on the pitch he could have broken into our development squad.

Jack Cork, a bit more pace and he probably wouldn't have played for us beyond that first loan spell.

To flip the question, Michael Duff - absolutely maxed out his career by sticking to his strengths.

I thought Biggins had a pretty good career once he came to Burnley.

Ashley Hoskin - I think he got badly battered and injured in one game and was never the same.

Frank Casper - he was great but I always thought he could be that bit better!

Andre Bikey -Attitude
Kev Mcdonald - Always thought he could have ended up a top half prem player
Danny ings - Injuries. He could have had a decent amount of england caps.
Jay Rod - That injury ruined his England chances.
Keith Tracey - Mental health problems wrecked a good talent
Charlie Austin - He should have moved on from QPR and built up a prem career. I'm sure he was on a mint at QPR and wouldn't drop his wage for a bigger club (could be wrong?)
Richard Chaplow - Moved too soon to WBA. Should have stayed at Burnley building up his experience instead of wasting away on the bench and stunting his development.
Patterson - Injuries. He was brilliant the season we went up. Could never stay fit after that.
McCann - Injuries. He was brilliant until he got Injuried (I think against Sunderland)
Eagles - Was unplayable the season we first came down from the Prem. Think he had a good season with Bolton and then faded away?
I hope Beyer doesn't end up being filled under Injuries. He's a classy player but doesn't seem to be able to stay fit
