Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
23 goals and 9 assists in 2 seasons is some going.

Millwall confirm there's an obligation to buy him.
Interestingly they say they "reluctantly accepted a substantial bid"
Wonder how high we've gone/going?

Doesn't mention an obligation or option to make the loan permanent. I hope there is or we develop him to lose him if we go up.
EDIT: I see there is an obligation. Good.

Good work Burnley FC. Onwards and upwards with Scott Parker.

Have to admit I don’t know too much about some of our new signings (could say that the last 4 transfer windows, to be honest!) but are we to assume that Anthony will play up front?

It's the start of thr nucleus of a new squad but there's more to be done. This season might come to soon for us to challenge for the top 2.Roosterbooster wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 11:37 pmSenior squad (as I see it, excluding long term injuries)

I think we are missing something in CM, and up front mainly and I have doubts about us in both full back areas.
If Tresor and Benson stick around and are willing to play however then we have the creativity that we have otherwise lacked.
Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Think it’s potentially a bit higher dude. I think you make some good points about the no 8s and the left wing but don’t think it matters as much in this league given the quality we’ve got. We’ve now got a squad that is powerful and got good technical ability. Onwards and upswards, chalk and cheese to last Saturday. Bring on the barstewards!!!CoolClaret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 11:32 pmFlemming takes the window from a 4/10 to a 7/10 for me. That '10' / second striker position was a gaping hole.
Positives:
- Added some much-needed experience/leadership material and a bit of steel.
- Brought some good characters and decent lads to the club.
- Got rid of most of the wantaways/dead wood/bad characters.
- Really strong in centre midfield which wins/loses you football matches.
- Managed to reinforce the wings which surprisingly, had become threadbare.
Negatives:
- Losing our three best players (expected).
- Pretty much all of our wingers play their best stuff off the left - Koleosho, Anthony, Sarmiento, Trésor (eek).
- Bit light at centre forward but Flemming can play there as well as 10 (such an important signing).
- Still a bit weak at fullback.
Questions:
- Who's playing off the right?
- Lots of our midfielders I'd say are more of the box to box / '8' types rather than sitting midfielder / '6' types and I believe more suited for a 4-3-3 than Parker's preferred 4-2-3-1.
Looking at our squad to a man I wouldn't have any from Blackburn anyway, that's for damn sure.
UTC!

90 points should make the top 2, going off the table below and I see it as a very even division with lots of draws. We will take some bedding in up front but our defence will always keep us in games, as they did at Sunderland.

Sarmiento/Benson.........Fleming/Tresor........Koleo/Anthony

Injured:

Just done a more visual representation to see how it looks on paper. Obviously some can play in more than one position but just wanted to see what depth we have in each position. Hopefully Beyer or Ekdal are back soon as we do look a bit short if Worrall or Esteve get injured.
Also there's probably a chance Tresor and Benson leave to a foreign country where the window is still.open but I've ambitiously included them as it looks a lot more exciting with them as options at this level. I don't think we have any right wingers at all really though apart from Benson, I think the rest all prefer the left which isn't great planning. I Really hope we don't stick Koleosho out there again, that experiment was a failure.
All in all it could be worse but could be better.

How much have we spent, about £30m plus loan fees, assuming Anthony and Sarmiento aren’t obligations?

I agree with the technical ability side - really impressed with both Hannibal and Massengo in possession, both are comfortable passing/receiving with either foot and driving with the ball.
Bring 'em on indeed!

I thing Hannibal will end up being our star signing this window, I was really impressed by him when he played for Birmingham against us. A great ending to the window. Now let's beat them up the road tomorrow to round off the weekend. COYC!

Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
The loans, particularly the ones with options/obligations really suit us for the championship. We literally don’t know what league we’ll be in next season. So sensible stuff.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 11:19 pmWe’ve lost 5 key players and not strengthened in the centre forward department so I’m not sure we can say this is an excellent transfer window. We’ve got good money for the majority of our sales but in the main that hasn’t been used to reinvest for obvious reasons. We’ve also topped up the numbers with loans which to some extent is kicking the can down the road.
That said, at one point this was looking like being pretty catastrophic, with a number of other important players supposedly asking to leave and/or being hawked out to other clubs.
We now have what looks like a competitive squad, which we didn’t have against Sunderland. Time will tell whether we have the quality required. What it does seem is that we’re now looking at a different mould of player with English experience, character and leadership which suggests lessons have been learned. Hopefully we can start to build some continuity going forward as this annual turnover of players is not in any way sustainable to building a successful team.

I also think hanging on to Brownhill, Esteve and Koleosho may actually elevate it also, as well as the incomings.

8/10 for me with the Flemming signing at the end. I'd have liked the Plymouth striker, as well, but I'll settle for this. As others have suggested, a number of these signings have a feel of Dyche about them which indicates a return to more pragmatic times. I, for one, approve of that.

Then again, they might well be out to play again by this evening: This squad will hammer Rovers and most everyone else by Christmas, but this afternoon isn't a foregone conclusion... A week or two too soon? Let's all try and act like grown ups if things don't go to plan.
That said, I'm predicting a 3 - 1 win for us

Oh come on. Against Sunderland we had no wide players, 2 keepers on the bench and a few u21s. We'd got to the last week of the transfer window with nearly every decent player linked with a move away, including Foster and koleosho. And let's have it right, the fact we had such a humongous squad is squarely the fault of the owners in the first place.johnnyjones wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 1:54 amWise words that the bedwetters from the last 2 weeks should learn for future windows
Anything personal or abusive is completely unacceptable, but say concerns weren't valid is also nonsense. Fans had every right to be annoyed at the situation we found course in at the stadium of light.

For all those calling for Humphries, at LB, instead of Pires I’ll just say at Wolves every time Humphries played the ball up to Sambo he retreated back to LB. When Pires came on the first two times he was in the same position he went past Sambo and took up a position.
Humphries might be the better defender but he's not a FB yet.

Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
We lost a lot of talent, but have replaced it with a bit more steel, and that was certainly missing last season.
I said at the start of the window the danger was throwing the baby out with the bath water, and we just about avoided that. The only loss that really frustrates me is O'Shea, not just because of his talent, but he had developed a good partnership with Esteve.
We needed to reduce the squad, and we have.
The lessons to learn for AP is not to get into that situation again, with too many players in the building. The negative knock on effects are many. To tweak a squad, instead of wholesale changes every summer, we need that team continuity.
We have a lot of new players, and as much as I see us having a great season, we haven't been together long enough to be confident this afternoon. If SP resists the urge to show boat the new players, and sticks with the 9 starters against Luton, that are still here, we will have a much better chance. The international break couldn't have come at a better time.

I feel that we’ve lost 3 players better than we currently have
But have at least 7 or 8 players more suitable and up for this physical challenge than the 17 or 18 others that we let go

We have added good leadership but actually Worrall apart none would appear to be starters. I struggle to see even Brownhill getting in the team now. He will today obvs.

Agree with the sentiment but just to be a bit pedantic, the loss of Vitinho means him, odobert and O’Shea are missing from that Luton sideColburn_Claret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2024 8:44 amWe lost a lot of talent, but have replaced it with a bit more steel, and that was certainly missing last season.

I think what he has done is be ruthless and move on players we don’t need. (Man Utd have spent years trying to do this). The players like Foster and Tresor who probably don’t want to be here were on his list to dump and it looks like he tried hard to shift them.
Brownhill is a weird one. Financially I thought Pace’s business brain would force him to sell but instead we have accepted his walking next summer.
Ironically if we’d brought in this sort of player last season I think we’d have had much more chance of staying up. We went pure potential rather than current ability last season. The signings this time are players in their prime.

Hate to bring this thread back to life. But I’ve heard Massengo is interested in the move to Auxerre and they are back in for him (haven’t checked but French window still open I think)

Sounds like we went in with another couple of bids for Whittaker on deadline day.
