Accrington Pubs

Hi Clarets,
I’ve just moved back to Lancashire after being away for over 20 years. What is the nightlife in Accrington like? I’m 46 year old, like a laugh etc but I’ve no idea where to go for a few scoops. Appreciate any recommendations.

Spoons is good in Accy - nice big outside area too. Seems to be all age groups.

I've been away from Accy for a lot longer but a great pub crawl in the 70s USED to be, starting in Bash and heading downhill into town as follows:
Bay Horse, Alma, Victoria, Park, Tramway, Hargreaves, Swan, Plantation and ending at the pub on the corner of Warner St/Abbey St. (name escapes me).
Prob all / most gone by now.

Avoid at all costs really. Changed massively from the old days. Spoons is okay then you have Crafty Fox, Hush and Tipsy Table on the Abbey St area. Grants is decent for ales and great pizza. Warmers is a tip these days and the less said about the Blackburn Road pubs the better.

I love Grants. They brew their own ale. Easy Street is a good session beer, and Accy Pals is decent, too. All their ales are good. They have five or so on draught. Crafty Fox is a decent small bar with a chillout atmosphere. Their food is good too.

Yes, Grants is good, Black Horse, Canine club, Crafty Fox all in and around the Abbey Street area.
We usually end up in the Arden on Abbey Street, they have bands on at weekends, not bad.

Of course it used to be the Commercial Hotel, a proper hotel with rooms for paying guests and on a personal note, was the venue for my parents' "wedding breakfast" ie reception (such that it was in wartime), July, 1941.

Good to hear there's some still going. Used to spend every Sunday night in Accy back in the day. Obviously those days are never coming back - for me or Accy - but nice to see there's a bit of life left in it.

I guess the Spoons is what was the Regency in the 90s?

Yeah the only time I’ve ever been there was around midnight on a Saturday, ended up there after some cancelled trains, it was deserted.

Bridge Inn....Bees Knees...Pickwick...then on to the Spinning Jenny up Green Howarth way if they had a band on...and hoping to bump into Miriam.


That was 1974 though so I suppose it might have changed a bit.

Mary, his daughter, opened "Mary's Music" on Whalley Rd didn't she?

Me & my mates did : Pickwick, next to Odeon cinema, Castle (Lion) Whalley Rd., Boar's Head (Thwaites, Burnley Rd.) , Jazz Club (Peel Pk) till it got raided & shut down, and finished off at the Swan bottom of Sandy Lane.

Happy, happy days, a lifetime ago.

As for 'nightlife' in Accrington, I'm not sure as I usually go during the day, but the poplar club on Wellington street is a really well run club that have lots of entertainment for people of all ages - good club.
I'm a real ale drinker myself and am a regular at the Wetherspoons, which is a good one and nearly always busy. the nearby Canine club is another good club with a couple of changing cask ales on and Tetley cask on permanently. The Abbey, Peel and Grants are also worth a visit.

As mentioned above the top end of town is the best now Grants,abbey,Arden,black horse,canine,tipsy table,crafty fox and hush.The peel park is worth a visit on a nice day as the beer garden is a belter and they allow you to take your pint across the road to watch peel play when they are at home.
