Burnley v QPR (proper) highlights......

Post by Goddy » Mon Oct 28, 2024 11:55 am

...from 1975 :D

When football was 'no nonsense'.

Master class from Leighton James (RIP) for our younger fans to enjoy and see what they missed....well, we all miss him really.

A nod too, to the QPR team which had some great names in it (not least, our own - well you know what I mean - Dave Thomas who was almost as good as Taffy was, that day).

Anyhow, for all those who didn't enjoy last Saturday's game so much (Burnley 007, perhaps   ) have fun watching this.....

Enjoyed that. No diving, with play stopping for free kicks every 5 seconds (ref even allowed play to go on for our goal with one of theirs half dead in the area). Players always looking to get the ball forward and attack. Risk of losing possession fully accepted as part of having a go at trying to score.

I’m almost at a point where I’d rather watch reruns of stuff like this than today’s football.

Agree with your thoughts entirely, hgas. OK - the technical ability might not have been up to today's standard but the passion, excitement and commitment to try and score somehow seemed better back then.

As for the crunching tackles, no rolling around (although I had a smidgeon of sympathy for Ian Gillard who was clearly hurt (when Burnley scored)), no bookings (although maybe there could/should have been) even though everyone was, let's say, 'fully committed' etc etc.

Much preferred the football back then...but then maybe I'm just being nostalgic?

PS The Cov v Wolves game which followed had a certain Mr Kindon bagging for Wolves. Also, the third match was between the top two in the First Div at the time.......yes, you guessed it....Ipswich v Middlesbro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoyed that cheers. Burnley wrote neat and tidy and that team would do really well on a modern pitch.

Great game. VAR would have a field day with QPRs shout for a penalty at 23:57

Thanks Goddy. Great to see it again from the side, having stood at the top of the open end. I still wonder how much better we would have fared later in the season, had Frank Casper been fit to grace that side - instead of being crippled by Hunter.

Good to see real hard fought, hard nosed footy for a change. We were wearing my all time favourite home kit. Second favourite is 22/23 "Classic Football Shirts" kit.

At first I expected it to be some brown muddy bog of a pitch and two teams just trying to stay in their feet whilst battering the crap out of each other playing no football whatsoever.....

However that was a cracking watch! Thoroughly enjoyed that. Some great football there. Leighton James was some player! What about both goalkeepers not wearing gloves?! I had it in my head goalkeepers had worn gloves forever?

Can you imagine in today's day and age if that QPR penalty shout wasn't given under VAR? Lancaster Gate would be set on fire before the end of the match

It was quite unusual for keepers to wear gloves back then.

Brilliant!
Some great players/characters on both sides.
Football you can watch without pillocks rolling around in agony when faced with a hard stare.
And no bloody VAR to muck it all up!

I was there, fantastic memories no sponsors on shirts, no diving around, no VAR, proper football
I remember having too many beers in the pub outside the ground. South Africa Arms ?. I had driven down and my mate had to drive home, he probably had one less than I did :D

Great football. What have they done to the beautiful game?
