It seems - and was similar in the QPR game - that Millwall concede a lot of free kicks soon after we cross the halfway line, then defend them by setting a player well within ten yards to stop any quick/clean long balls being played forward; the referees don't stop it and we compliantly tap a pass backwards.
Why not play forward? It doesn't have to be hard, or even towards a specific player, just such that those defenders move and play the ball; they won't be able to resist. That's an infringement, so bring it to the referees attention and get him giving further free kicks and yellow cards should it continue; a couple of the latter should see either the defenders backing-off, or the referee at least instructing them to.
