The Fifth Woman by Henning Mankell

Detective Wallander story about a serial killer set in Sweden. Very very good, grips you from the first few pages. You get a real glimpse into the difficult life and troubled mind of a murder detective. Highly recommend.

Abyss:World On The Brink by Max Hastings. In depth look at The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. I was 10 years old and was aware that something both extraordinary and frightening was happening.
Again, it's strange the things we remember but I'm sure I went with my dad to the match in the middle of the crisis. Home to Everton, I think but I can check. He was very subdued despite a victory.
A long ' intro' by the author does have areas of 'black humour' especially when he mentions that the Russians had 5 megatonnes of explosive set for Liverpool alone. Being 1962 the Beatles hadn't quite 'made it' and he relates how sad it would have been for the rest of the world had Liverpool been destroyed. They would have been led to believe that Cliff Richard was about as good as the UK could produce in terms of popular music.😒

The Fall, by Henry Reece: a revisionist account of the fall of the English Republic 1659/60. The accepted version, as victors write history and historians since Gardiner followed their line, is that the Restoration of Charles II was inevitable. Reece argues more or less convincingly that it was more nuanced than that and that the Republic’s demise was made more likely by the personal motivation of characters such as Hesilrige and Monck who did not necessarily want a return to monarchical government.

The Hollies would have dominated. Even the Russians wouldn't have dropped one on Burnley.

I was ten at that time too and vaguely remember it (and of course the Kennedy assassination). In the sixties I had occasional nightmares about the bomb.

This one has slipped under my radar. Carol Ann Lee is a decent author. Please let me know how you get on with it.

Just checked and my memory letting me down. We played Man City, not Everton and we drew rather than win. Anyway the Russians 'blinked first' and we all survived that crisis.

Agree very good thriller writer who I found by pure chance. Whilst looking through the 3 for £6 section in the Works shop I came across "Thicker than Water" on the front cover was quick recommendation "Absolutely intoxicating" Clare Balding. This was unusual enough for me to spend £2 for a book. Was very pleasantly surprised and now have 3 more J D Kirk books in my to read pile.

Just picked up 'Ray Bradbury - Dandelion Wine' from one of those boxes in a cafe. Looks different from his usual Sci fi.

I like the book re-cycling idea, I drop in ones I've read and take some others home.

Brilliant book as was ‘We begin at the end’by the same author.

Recently re-read Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.
The Poisonwood Bible is another fantastic read also.

Just bought A Calamity of Souls by David Baldacci - set in 1968 Virginia - legal thriller centred on a Black man charged with killing a wealthy White couple. Sounds a bit similar to Grisham’s A Time To Kill which was excellent.

Just finished "the girl who could move **** with her mind" by Jackson Ford. Very entertaining sort of cross between "how to kill your family" and one of the Alex rider novels (not the film). Light entertainment, and I didn't guess the end.
I usually go for one of the Christmas themed British library classic series for Christmas, and re-read one of my favourites over Christmas (Christmas pudding by Nancy Mitford being the best of the Xmas regulars), but will pick something up from my "unread and waiting for me to semi retire" heap in between.
I've not re-read three men in a boat for ages, so may do that, but is gives off similar vibes to Christmas pudding.

I’ve just taken delivery of the autobiography Alexei Navalny - Patriot and it’s a very interesting read so far. What are you reading or have recently read that you enjoyed.
If you like autobiographies then this one is fascinating. The authorities reaction and lies about the Chernobyl disaster are explained and are pretty shocking, even today. The effect of Novichok is scary stuff but he survived. Just a shame Putin had him murdered as he was a very intelligent and brave man.
