Re: Positives and Negatives
Can't really put the referee under negative as it's out of our control. It's all about the positives as that was an improved performance. I'd stick with the same front 3 and Flemming.

Defensively solid.
So many players gone backwards.
Kolesho wouldn’t look out of place in the Burnley pub league.
Fleming do we have to keep him?

Played well tonight.
Had some really good periods with the ball.
Goals will come, playing like that.
We deserved to win.

I still don’t think Flemming is fully match fit or that he was playing in his natural position. The first bit will easily sort itself out , the second bit better do soon

Brownhill was good tonight bar one moment …. He works tirelessly off the ball and that’s often ignored

It’s not what he does on the ball. Browny worked his socks off for the team.

Re: Positives and Negatives
Played well tonight I thought.
Anthony and Sarmiento linked up well
Defence was pretty solid.
Cullen and Brownhill dominated large parts
Koleosho looks like a donkey - needs a rest but we don't have a replacement if we want to retain the Sarmiento in the middle (which looked good). Maybe play Pires there instead. He looked to attack in behind more often than Luca

Re: Positives and Negatives
Clean sheet away from home.
Scored a perfectly good goal.
Egan-Riley looks class.
Redmond and Ramsey back on the grass.
Koleosho really poor.
Flemming poor but not playing in his natural position.
Still not creating enough.

Re: Positives and Negatives
The first time Koleosho went outside his man tonight was the most threatening he looked and it was the best chance he created.
Until he has gained some confidence and has developed experience to understand when it's right to carry on or pass I would just keep telling him to do that, again and again and again.
He wants to come inside but lacks the ability to correctly weight a pass in a congested area, or runs into congestion and over runs it.
I personally don't think it makes any difference as regards his output whichever side he plays on, his delivery in general is poor but i thought we looked much more balanced with him there so carry on with it.

Re: Positives and Negatives
Loads better that. Four attackers on and we made chances and scored a winner.
Re: Positives and Negatives
One of the biggest problems is where we are asking our wingers to pick the ball up. Positionally we look far too deep. It completely nullifys any width we have.
All game Anthony and Koleosho received the ball usually coming back towards our own goal, around the half way line, expected to turn back towards the opposition goal before carrying it.
We literally ask our wingers to not only skin the full back, but quite often the opposition winger before them too.
It's partially a result of the way we are playing it round the back and partially down to the lack of a defender who can step out of defence and break the press. We had both Matsen and Beyer doing that last time.
Pires is probably our biggest attacking threat from the full back position and has to start for me.
Retaining Vitinho for right back would have been the ideal. We'll have to buy a wing back in January.
Without having that defender in the side you need your Central midfielders to carry the ball in order to get further up the field. Neither Brownhill or Cullen is the type of midfielder who can do this. Cullen is your more deep playmaker and Brownhill more of your midfield ratter. Its another reason we can't hold the ball in the centre for long enough for the team to shift to the next phase. Sarmiento provided a decent link but again without the wide players getting past him and only Flemming ahead options are limited.
We need to start getting the ball Infront of the wingers and pushing forwards for them to hold the space higher up the field. It'll also encourage your likes of Koleosho to stay wide.

Re: Positives and Negatives
As poor and ineffective as Flemming was tonight, that team with two decent wingers wins that game easily.
I’m sick of saying it / thinking it, but a fit Redmond and Tresor (two quick players with good technical ability) would make a huge difference.
But that isn’t going to happen for ages…..if ever.

Thought we looked pretty good away at a team likely to finish in the top 6.
Scored a good goal, hit the post, had 2 or 3 other excellent chances and restricted them to scraps.

Re: Positives and Negatives
Egan Riley is winning me over. He struggled one on one with Grant late on a couple of times. Some of his passing was quite incisive. The straight through balls on the floor were excellent, the diagonal is too lofted currently. Massive progress from him overall. Returning defenders will have to earn the right to play instead of him.
Sarmiento found pockets of space and linked midfield and attack well. His touch is super sharp and he's intelligent on the ball. We should have found him more. I can remember at least five more occasions when he was on for the counter.
Pires needs to play because he is creative going forward and we have to accept that he is not particularly strong in the challenge. Lad needs to bulk up.
Cullen was crab like first half. Much better second. That central two could be better balanced offensively. We need a ball carrier in there.
Koleosho stick to running outside in slower build ups. Not sure why we aren't popping it into space and releasing him on the quick counters. He was not as bad as some are making out tonight. Felt he was gone for the last fifteen and needed subbing.

Re: Positives and Negatives
Redmond is quick. He’s always been quick….certainly quicker than Anthony, for example. I find it actually a strange call to question if he’s got a bit of pace about him.
Also, I’m not sure you lose pace just because you’ve had an injury. Im not sure it quite works like that. Has Koleosho?
Re: Positives and Negatives
Look up the age of the 2 players in question... I didn't see any pace from Redmond when he played last season and when he was at Southampton in the latter stages he was a lot less quicker than when he first went there. Why do you think he went to Turkey after 6 years? One word... ineffective for the Premier League!Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 11:17 pmRedmond WAS quick. Saramiento provided the creativity through the middle from midfield that neither Cullen, Brownhill. Hannibal or Laurent do and it improved us, just hope SP keeps that in the system.

Re: Positives and Negatives
A lot better than before but we have been spoiled with terrible performances which make today look fantastic. We should aim to do better against a team we know that only scored two goals at home all season.
We threw more at them then usual but we let ourselves down with terrible corners and bad decision making.
I think we will do well once the players gel but there's still a lot of work to do.

Positives
Egan Riley improving every game
Sarmiento looked sharp and a natural number 10
Never looked like conceding
Negatives
Koleosho getting worse every game
Flemming completely lost up top
A much improved performance and on another day we come away with a 2/3-0 win. The disallowed goal is just laughable

Re: Positives and Negatives
Positives
We looked dangerous when someone went to the goal line and actually crossed the ball
CJER - becoming a first name on the team sheet, him and Esteve have formed a great partnership
Pires is a great attacking threat
We scored! albeit disallowed by one of the worst refs I've seen in a long time
We still have good players to come back from injury, which will increase competition for places and that usually improves performances
Negatives
Still deciding to play around at the back and be conservative instead of taking a gamble with a risky through ball
Flemming was played in the wrong position for him (IMO)
Still insisting on trying to play the ball into the box to feet, sometimes just whip it into the danger zone (like they did last night in the first half)
Game called out for bringing on Hountondji to attack their goal with Flemming in behind in the last 20 minutes (IMO) but SP went defensive to save the point

Re: Positives and Negatives
He’s not as strong defensively. That said, he’s a million percent the best option at LB if we want to attack and score goals. He’s looked one of our biggest threats in every game he’s played - gets forward, good passer, creates chances, can cross, shoots.Turftalkers mentor wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 8:10 amProbably the most amateurish left back we’ve ever had .

Last night he had a shot wide, hit the post and delivered the cross for Anthony’s goal. We desperately need a right sided version now.
There were some on here saying CJ was a rabbit in the headlights a month or so ago. Now he’s one of our best players putting MotM performances in. Pires needs some game time like him and a little bit of defensive coaching from SP.

Re: Positives and Negatives
Positive number one: This board has been a little quieter with the negativity. All of those predicting really bad results against the better sides have just seen us play West Brom who are 5th and a decent outfit, away, and do enough to win the game.
Positive number 2- bar a blip here and there I think we are slowly finding our way.
Negative number 1- We didn't get all 3 points.
Negative number 2- We are still struggling to get the ball infront of our forward players.

Re: Positives and Negatives
Positives - our defensive structure & press is pretty excellent, we rarely give up big chances. Sarmiento looked tidy in those central-ish areas. Egan-Riley picked him out several times with some really nice THB like fizzed balls. More of that.
Negatives - 3 games without a goal, undeservedly last night after being denied a perfect goal, but still a concern. Still not convinced Flemming is a main striker and really want to see him off Foster, his box movement is actually decent though (for his headed chance it was a nice peel off the defender to go round the back).

Re: Positives and Negatives
I feel we're one slight change away from potentially doing much better - and that is Flemming into the 10 and a proper striker ahead of him. Sarmiento did well there last night and for me he should now have the right wing slot with Anthony going over to the left (let Koleosho start being a Benson-esque substitute to hopefully rebuild his performances). Foster has been very poor this season and it's hard to be overly excited at him returning to the starting line up, but that has to be the route forwards at least until January. The defence last night have their shirts on lock, in my opinion. Pires is shaky at times defensively but offers himself going forwards and suits this system far better than Humphreys.

Re: Positives and Negatives
Agree about the defensive structure. I can’t get excited about a clean sheet at this level really, where teams almost conspire against themselves not to score (like us!), but what I do see every week fantastic work rate from the whole team to win the ball back when we lose it. That’s excellent and I can forgive a lot of things when the team is working that hard for the shirt.RVclaret wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 8:50 amPositives - our defensive structure & press is pretty excellent, we rarely give up big chances. Anthony in particular stood out for his work rate last night. That and his positioning for a number of chances (wasn’t just his goals where he was exactly where he should be - in the box, far post) was a real positive for me. His best game, I’d say.
I’ve not been impressed with Flemming at all but agree his movement was top notch for that chance. Shame the header wasn’t of the same quality!

Re: Positives and Negatives
Positives
A decent result against a team now in the top 6
We looked the far stronger side
The defence and midfield look coherent, press together and are a formidable unit
Sarmiento did a great job linking the play in the central areas
Much sharper with the passing
Quicker distribution from front to back
SP reacted to the result on Saturday with a positive change
A general feeling that apart from the odd one thrown in the team is improving
Negatives
Flemming snatches at chances and seems to have little composure when presented with one
Kolosheo just doesn't have the awareness required for a player at this level or is struggling with confidence
There is little physical presence in the box, which is not helpful with two wingers
SP was too cautious with the subs and seemed not to have the confidence/desire to win the game
Should have won but didn't and that is down to the imbalanced squad rather than the manager and that can't be fixed until January
A general feeling that we are top 4 and not top 2.

Re: Positives and Negatives
This. It's neither his or Parkers fault but I think folk are forgetting that we are placing a lot of the attacking burden on the shoulders of a lad who's just gone 20, recovering from a serious long term injury.NewClaret wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 9:27 amAgree about the defensive structure. I can’t get excited about a clean sheet at this level really, where teams almost conspire against themselves not to score (like us!), but what I do see every week fantastic work rate from the whole team to win the ball back when we lose it. That’s excellent and I can forgive a lot of things when the team is working that hard for the shirt.
If Redmond, Tresor, Ramsey and Benson were all fit and all had the capacity to play the minutes then I don't think we would see that much of him starting. He needs time.
