Midfielders or strikers...

Post by clarethead » Wed Dec 11, 2024 12:24 am

Annoyed not to win again, after dominating the game tonight. However, its interesting, or makes one think a wee bit, that we are 20 games in and our recognized strikers only have a handful goals between them and our attacking midfielders seem better set up for chances.
Do we change our set up to get another striker in the box at the expense of a defensive midfielder maybe and expose ourselves at the back or what do we do? It seems to me that its the strikers job is to score and the midfielders job is to create the chances, but is that the modern game now???
Somehow we need to get recognized finishers (strikers) in the box because right now, we have 3 center halves marking our 1 recognized striker and its too easy for that low block defense. Seems like we can trust our defense to do it's job, but how do we tip the balance in the final third in our favor - continue with the overloaded midfield or play with 2 strikers?

Complete the signing of Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth and return Obafemi to Burnley. His bustling style will create chances.Release Redmond.Delcroix,Beyer El Dakiel,Sambo and Flemming to free up wages and shift Tressor.Bring in Harrison Reed on loan to buy from Fulham. Negotiate short term deal for Gray as he seems to be rediscovered his mojo.No sales of anyone in January and open serious talks with Connor and Josh re new contracts.

We don't need or want Whittaker. He's a decent player but certainly nothing special. Some of the players you'd like to release aren't realistic - especially Al-Dakhil who we sold to Stuttgart in August...

I'm hoping Tom Cannon's loan at Stoke ends this month & we can get him for the rest of the season.

If we’re serious about trying to get up this season we need to be bold and sign some real quality. I suggested the other day we push the boat out and get Almiron from Newcastle I know he’s 30 years old but he always looks lively. Also Morris from Luton. With those two I think we’d do okay.

Regarding a striker, a loan (perhaps with loan to buy if we go up) would be fine. Someone who simply isn't getting enough minutes and wants to play football and put themselves in the shop window for the summer.

The tactics aren't working, and we definitely need 2 up top. One to win the ball, one to win the second ball.

I'm surprised Houtonji hasn't played more. I understand he needs to find his feet in English football, and that the manager sees them in training, but we are in a situation that caution doesn't help, it only makes the problem worse. A time to be brave and take a few more chances.

I think 28 year old Jay Rod would be in double figures by now because he is a PL quality clever player.

If you have a Sam Vokes or Chris Wood you can play Flemming or Foster because they can buzz around the big man who wins headers, knock on etc.

If you want to overload the midfield then you need clever forwards who can hold the line and allow the midfielders to break forward. I mean Flemming looks like a non-league player at the moment albeit he clearly isn't and Foster is not going to lead the line.

I think the last few games have shown the issue quite clearly.

We currently don’t have a forward at the club who has scored more than 2 goals in the Championship this season. After 20 matches we must be well on the way to setting some sort of unwelcome record. For Burnley football club if not the Championship.

I've always been of the belief it's the midfield, central and attacking that needs addressing before a striker.

I get Jay isn't what he was, but we improved with him in the side and did a 3 game week recently so no fitness issues.

Last night case in point. Plenty of possession around the box, Tony highlighted in his report 6x as many touches in the box. The quality in, around and delivery into the box is our big issue. If we improve that, I'm of the opinion Jay and Foster would be more than sufficient, for now.

Our strikers quite simply aren't getting the service. I appreciate they play a part in the quality of build up play but I dont really see any glaring issues in that aspect with Jay. Foster could definitely improve that area of his game.

A very interesting and worrying point you raised. Normally that would indicate relegation

When we are at home against mid to lower table teams who sit in we need to put two up top and get rid of the defensive minded midfield. We are playing not to lose and are so easy to defend against. We also need to up the tempo.

Generally, I only like to see a team play with 2 defensive midfielders in one scenario: You think the team you are playing against is better than you.
