Forest mate says he was a bad egg there and Worrall in particular won't be pleased. Don't shoot the messenger.

Makes more sense to me than the Barnes signing! If he's fit enough to do a job his range of passing is miles better than the rest of our midfield.

Gotta feel sorry for Parker.Granny WeatherWax wrote: ↑Mon Jan 20, 2025 5:31 pmI just don’t see it. He’s hardly played recently and his stats are rubbish. 20 goals and 26 assists in the last 9 years.
How's he expected to know anything about midfield play in the higher echelons of English football?

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
Good post. I hope he does well for us but I've always thought in his younger days he was 'an accident waiting to happen'. Could be volatile and moody so let's hope he's grown out of that.DCWat wrote: ↑Mon Jan 20, 2025 5:56 pmIF he’s fit, can still offer what he used to do, it’s not a bad signing, though it feels like a bit of a gamble.
It is low risk in one sense, in another, it’s quite high risk if he isn’t able to deliver - the cost of failing to get promoted could be far greater than being prepared to spend on some younger quality.
We now have more than enough (easy to argue, too many) ‘older heads’. How many minutes are Shelvey, Rodriguez, Barnes, Worrall, Egan, Redmond going to play, are we really going to get value in terms of contribution on the pitch from what will be significant wages, between them all?
We now need to add some real quality that will allow us to score some bloody goals. We have far too many in our squad that for one reason or another are contributing the square root of **** all.

Absolutely vital we signed someone of his ilk. We were absolutely knackered if Cullen got injured, now we have some backup.

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
Not sure about this one at all. His career looks to be on the wane.
Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
Well, no.
To all those people who know/remember shelvey from the highlight reels, forget that. It's possible, he can do it, but it's much like Steven Gérard in that for every one that is heading for the top corner, there are 4 heading for row Z.
For a good few seasons at Newcastle, he seriously ****** people off. It was a continual cycle of not tracking back, awful tackles leading to penalties and red cards, a gait and energy level that made Chris waddle seem like Scott Parker, balls given away when a decent forward pass was on, looking for the glory ball. The opponent was worrying about his class, but toon fans were hoping he'd be on the bench.
But, for the last season and a bit, he turned into a really useful player and had seemingly solved all of that, such that I seem to remember even after he had signed for forest, he still turned up at that days game and got into the team's winning picture at the request of both former teammates and coaches.
If we get the second version, then this is a really good signing, but my head tells me that we won't.

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
If anyone knows what Shelvey can bring to the club it's likely to be Parker and he wants the player here. There is an element of Shelvey needing to prove that he can still do it in English football and if he sincerely believes that himself we could be applauding this signing at the end of the season. His footballing skills are unquestionable

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
In principle, fine. Decent signing on paper.
Provided the very obvious questions about his attitude have been answered (and as that interview indicates, there are two or three good character referees around the club in Worrall, Cork and Roberts), and provided he's fit enough and match ready enough to influence Championship games from the get go, he is a player with a good pedigree, who adds a skill set in terms of his range of passing that we probably lack in the midfield area, and adds some additional quality from set pieces as well, which can't hurt.
But like Barnes, whilst he's a good option who adds depth in a key position, he doesn't obviously improve the first eleven, and we're going to need more than just squad reinforcements to get over the line. This is a signing that only really stacks up because it keeps budget aside for the sort of signing who really addresses our shortcomings in the final third - not on its own.

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
Obviously not seen him recently, but if he still harbours the same desire that he had in the PL then he will be a good signing.
Laurent is good but is caught flat footed too many times, I expect Shelvey to be on his toes going forward which should increase pressure on opposition defences.

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
From memory he could really hit a dead ball, hopefully he’s still got that in his game. He’ll be giving Brownhill some lessons.

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
Probably the slowest player we could have signed but ultra aggressive with a hard shot and good long range passing. Got to be an upgrade on Laurent, who remains useful but frankly isn’t a top of the league starter.

But can Shelvey put in a shift defensively?

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
Suppose that’s the test isn’t it and you pick and choose when he plays. For example Oxford away that finished 0-0, Oxford just camped in thier own half, we didn’t need a defensive midfielder, we needed someone who could play a killer pass or strike one from nowhere

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
This is a good signing till end of season.
But slight niggle says to me brownhill may well be off before window closes or we are expect an offer for him which we will no doubt accept and this is covering our back a bit.
That would be a shame but good planning of that's the case.

Putting in a "shift" was always the requirement of any Mick McCarthy player

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
I think this is an astute signing.
He was a terrific player a few seasons ago, and if he’s still half as good as he was, he’ll be a real asset in this league.

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
There's no doubt it is. But he spent his peak career playing in the Prem - with the odd England appearance. Unlikely he'd have signed for the 3rd best team in the 2nd division at that time.
Just remains to be seen if he's a Mitchel Thomas / Phil Bardsley signing.. or a Jon Walters / Dale Stephens.
Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
If he can stay fit and still has the fight, then I am sure he'll be an excellent addition. Really rated him a few years ago - exactly the sort of player we need.

Re: ARTICLE:Shelvey joins the Clarets
I think this has all the makings of being a good signing. I think there has been games where we have had a lot of the ball but failed to break down teams that have effectively parked the bus. Someone who can knock the ball about may well help improve our attack. He is no cost in terms of transfer and only here for 4 months, so not much of a risk really.
