Would agree at that price (£5-6m) it’s a fair deal. The rumoured £10-£12m most definitely not and I’d rather we pulled out if that’s what it cost.burnley007 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 9:52 amIs that now a fact? I hope it is. I'm sure tonight's team news will tell us.
Seems a really good deal at that price.

A real tough one for the player if he plays. Have a great game and score the winner and he may be costing himself and his new teammates a promotion and all the bonuses that go with it.
Have an awful game and fans will be underwhelmed with the signing and give him grief if he doesn't start well here.

I’ll be surprised if he plays tonight regardless of transfer status. Not in Plymouth’s interests on many levels, particularly if he was as lazy as reported last game. They’ll need 11 men working hard tonight.

Seen an article with their manager saying Whittaker will start tonight for Plymouth
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
There is no chance Whittaker doesnt start tonight (if a deal is not close). He's the one player in their team that can make something happen from nothing, irrespective of his current 'dip' in form according to the pilgrims.NewClaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 10:59 amAh okay, with you saying 100% I thought their was news.

Proof will be in the pudding but the reality is we will know where we are at with the persuit of Whittaker come 7pm when the teams are out.
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
There was an article in the Plymouth local press yesterday but it is full of quotes from an interview that was done at least 3 or 4 days ago. Plymouth apparently are down to the bare bones for Center Backs. You'd think that we could help them out with that as a sweetener as we've got about 105 in the squad who can't even get on the bench. Trouble is they wouldn't be able to afford the wages. According to some of their fans it sounds like taking Obafemi back would but more positive than including him in the deal.blatherwickstattoos wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 11:04 amSeen an article with their manager saying Whittaker will start tonight for Plymouth
It's fairly obvious that Plymouth wouldn't want Whittaker to play against them BUT surely if this was further down the line we'd have seen some sort of rumour about a medical or a visit to Gawthorpe?

Agree, and for this reason I can’t see him playing. If you’re the Plymouth manager would you trust Whittaker if through 1v1 in the last 5 minutes? Maybe seals himself another season in the Championship by scoring.sleeperclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 10:47 amA real tough one for the player if he plays. That and lazy last game, plus any injury to him and that’s a big transfer fee and chance to strengthen the squad for a survival push is scuppered.
No way I’d pick him if I were them, even if a deal weren’t close.
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Sorry, Yes wasn't just meaning we are the only ones in the race, just meant that unless there is a deal close (with any team involved) he plays. A team like Plymouth can't possibly afford to drop their talisman.

Interesting if we are leading the race and he plays, does he try and make a good impression on the club and fans he wants to join and risk costing us points in our promotion chase that he could soon be part of? Or just go through the motions and have fans from BFC saying don't bother signing him?
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
I've seen Morgan Whittaker play about 4 times and each and every time he has been complete rubbish.A Plymouth fan that I know says he is lazy.I would not be too upset if we didn't get him..

That was also the accusation on Shelvey, so much so that the player even mentioned it in his club interview. We can all make our own minds up as to whether Parker is the type to pick lazy players who don’t put a shift in. More likely he is the reverse - leaving out talent because they don’t run enough.
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
We are in a novel situation where both the bidding team and the team Whittaker plays for are playing each other, so I do get the point you are making. I'm merely suggesting that, if the player himself doesn't make himself unavailable, a deal isn't nearing being done (for any team that has shown interest) and hes fit, Plymouth play him. At the end of the day its hes a professional footballer who will have had speculation through his career. He is a Plymouth player and still has a job to do for his club, unless he decides to force a move himself.bumba wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 1:08 pmInteresting if we are leading the race and he plays, does he try and make a good impression on the club and fans he wants to join and risk costing us points in our promotion chase that he could soon be part of? However that's all if, buts & maybes my point is if he is available for selection by the manager - he plays

If he is told he is playing by the manager then he has to play according to his contract.
If we haven't offered enough then Plymouth are well within their rights to play him.

Wonder if MW will celebrate if he scores tonight, the quirkiness of sport means that he'll 100% bag one tonight if he plays!!

Its not a rule, it will be in his contract.
I don't think any club would allow a player to have a contract where the player can play only if he wants to.
Cue the obligatory Tresor jokes

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
In our promotion season we lost around 1.5 million. This was put down to bonuses and having to pay an old debt from the administration days on getting back to the championship.Big Vinny K wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 8:38 amI know you have mentioned this cash in the bank and being financially sound as justification for not needing to sell a couple of times on this thread now.
Your audited accounts are by no means in the basket case territory of some other clubs in our league but aren’t you posting pretty significant losses every year recently. Whilst you have seen decent increases in your revenue since your promotion season that revenue still has to be one of the lowest in the championship. To “compete” in the championship your owners have said they have had to increase operating costs pretty significantly which had resulted in your losses.
Cash in the bank can often be very misleading. It’s a point in time number and particularly in football it can be inflated for a number of reasons (season ticket sales coming in, a sky TV payment etc).
Not sure how deep your owners pockets are to fund year on year losses - I guess not that deep given you are trying to get new investors on board. For me you do not look like a club who can afford to walk away from the offer and if you go down you are clearly going to be looking in trouble financially with a big drop in your revenues and those operating costs still proportionally high.
Last season our losses was 2.5 million which was put down mainly to amortisation. However prior to that we were breaking even. Revenue last season it was 25.5 million which on last seasons accounts is greater than Bristol city and stokes. If you go on the accounts from the previous season in the championship our revenue would of been 11th. What is poor our chairman believes in infrastructure over ploughing money into players hence we had possibly the lowest playing budget of 11 million last season In the last couple of years it's something like 10 million spent on infrastructure like buying the old goals five a side place and the green taveners building for hospitatility. At the moment they are in conjunction with the council undergoing a 26 million upgrade of sports facilities in Devonport. It's costing the club 11 million but they will get academy level 2 out of it.
Now the big one whilst we have no debt, the chairman knows he is limited in taking us forward that is why investors are being bought in who will take over the club. No names have been released because confidentiality clauses have been signed. At the moment it's with the efl and if the "rumoured" names are true will put us in a different light with them being billionairese

We need a full back who can create decent chances. Taylor does this once a season.

I don't see why we need a left back. Humphreys is playing great and getting better and better going forward. Pires probably isn't good enough for where we want to be but is a capable enough backup for us at this level.

I wouldn't advocate signing him but I find there are always a mixture of people who want us to re-sign old players and a mix of people who want to "do them down".
On balance I think it's fair to say he'd be a very good Left back still at this level for the right team.

We’ve gone from having limited experience to nigh on half a team full of experienced, older heads. We don’t need any more. We also don’t need defensive recruits - the priority has to be goal getters / goal creators - what finances we have has to go on forwards, no ifs, no buts.

If Whittaker starts and scores against the meanest defence in Europe, then he’s worth having. If he doesn’t try, then that’s because he doesn’t want to knock back the club he is about to join. All positive.
