I think so - Hull look transformed going forwards. Some really nice attacking play. Narrow and compact seemed to work!

Re: Tonight's Football
Its a good point-a big risk to start both forwards, and neither looked a major threat. I suspect man management is not Wilder's strength, and they could lose their togetherness. Their defeat by three and our 5-0 win have done wonders for our goal difference. It gives us a point advantage over every team bar Leedsagreenwood wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2025 9:54 pmWas a surprise that he started Diaz & Cannon straight away. Might not have been a popular move in a dressing room that had got the team into second place.

Re: Tonight's Football
Odd game. Hull found themselves 2-0 to the good without looking particularly impressive, but did start to control the game from there.
Sheffield United were poor first half, but had a good spell second half until Hull scored their second out of the blue. Wilder brought loads of attacking players on and they looked a shambles for the last 25 minutes.

Re: Tonight's Football
Hull threw debutants straight in tonight but they were in the bottom three. It was an odd thing to do when you are in second place. They had Brewster, Rak-Sakyi & Campbell on the bench, so it’s not as if they had no alternative.warksclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2025 10:08 pmIts a good point-a big risk to start both forwards, and neither looked a major threat. Re: Tonight's Football
Sheffield United was one of our easiest games this season. It’s a strange one, because they’ve been on fire recently. Wilder isn’t the manager he was five years ago, suspect he ‘celebrates’ a bit too much these days.

Re: Tonight's Football
Sheffield had a goal disallowed for offside that shouldn't have been it might have been off for PL rules under VAR, but it wasn't off for normal football rules because he was level) and that would have made it 1-1. On the other hand, Hull scored two more so there's absolutely no guarantee that it would have made any difference in the end. Sheffield attacking looked like us in our more feeble moments, except that their corners looked a bit more dangerous. Their defence was poor.

You’d think it’s too much to ask for Plymouth so hold Sunderland tomorrow given how bad they looked on Wednesday.

Re: Tonight's Football
The other thing I just thought of was what our result at Plymouth would have done psychologically to the Blades. They would have watched it and known but for the ref it should have been 7-0 at half time (ok, 6 due to the moving ball). They must have previously thought their big chance is we cannot score.
Then they make snap signings and we seemingly choose to pull away from Whittaker. Dunno, feels like a big shift in the division today, wise heads maybe prevailing?

Re: Tonight's Football
Hull were very, very impressive.
Definitely in a false position.
Good manager and they've made some very shrewd January signings.
I would say exactly the opposite about Sheffield.

Perfect scenario. I hope he gives them the edge they need to take points off Leeds, Sunderland and Sheffield.

Re: Tonight's Football
They have Middlesbrough and Leeds away in the next couple of weeks. Let’s see after that. They ship a lot of goals and haven’t really focused on strengthening their defence.
Mind you, it is a better run than the Blades, they have a run of four games coming up that has Boro and Leeds at home, Luton and in form QPR away.
Re: Tonight's Football
It’ll be very interesting to see how Sunderland fare when it gets to the last 5-10 games. That’s when the pressure is really going to mount, and they have a young squad that haven’t been in this position before, bar maybe one or two like Mepham, and also a manager that hasn’t done it before.
From a mentality perspective, I’d say we are the best equipped with Leeds, although their falling away last year may play on their minds a little.
The signing of Barnes is a clear indicator of how we’re gearing up for the run in.

I thought Sunderland would fall away, but not sure now. I was quite impressed with rhem on the Turf.

Don’t think for a moment they will hold them but you’d expect a reaction and possibly a more defensive set up to prevent another thumping.agreenwood wrote: ↑Fri Jan 24, 2025 10:18 pmYou’d think it’s too much to ask for Plymouth so hold Sunderland tomorrow given how bad they looked on Wednesday.

Signing Barnes and Shelvey will prove to be a smart move, I think.

Sheffield united conceded 11 goals in the first 22 games.
They have now conceded 10 in the last 7.

Re: Tonight's Football
Brereton replaced by Brewster is like replacing Bill with Ben from the flowerpot men.
Re: Tonight's Football
This is it, from IFAB:
"If the referee plays the advantage for an offence for which a caution/sending-off would have been issued had play been stopped, this caution/sending-off must be issued when the ball is next out of play. However, if the offence was denying the opposing team an obvious goal-scoring opportunity the player is cautioned for unsporting behaviour: if the offence was interfering with or stopping a promising attack, the player is not cautioned."
Got a feeling that Berge was sent off last season when this wasn't applied which is where I saw it.

The more I think about it, the more I believe Sheff Utd bought Cannon to stop anyone else getting him. Their fans are questioning why they bought him when they have enough players in that position. They think they should have gone for a centre half as Robinson isn't the answer. Also a defensive midfielder as Peck runs round like a headless chicken and leaves gaps all over the place.

Re: Tonight's Football
I don't think Cannon ore Diaz were the problem. They've had a lot of injuries lately and not been able to play a settled side and of course all teams have had a lot of games recently.
Diaz got a good shot in early and had a couple of other goes coming in from the left. Cannon got little support at all. It was surprising that Cannon started though as they had Campbell on the bench who has done reasonably well for them when he's played although he has had injury issues. I suspect they missed Hamer's aggression and drive. I'm sure they missed Souza too who was on the bench but not properly fit. They are also missing Tom Davies who I thought was playing well.
I thought Hull were, on the whole, quite a neat and tidy side and created some good opportunities and goals. They also fought well for the team.

Re: Tonight's Football
I actually think this really takes some of the pressure off us for Monday. We could have been more than 1 win off the top 2 which would have added real pressure to us.
Now we know if we lose on Monday we are still in an excellent position with the toughest games out of the way.
I don't think Sheff Utd are the big concern though, they are tactically basic with the worst manager of the 4 teams and arguably the worst manager.
The big one is Sunderland, they look a really good side and importantly still seem to be improving.

It does make you wonder if all these new signings, Sheffield zu are making, has had a big negative effect on the existing squad.
