Struggling to understand how Worrall is getting 6s when a much changed team keep a clean sheet at a PL team and he is marshalling the defence.

Hladky 8 good saves and great technical ability with feet
Sonne 7- looks a cool customer
Egan Riley 6 good when pushing out , one very bad moment though unable to control Hlady’s little dolly ball
Worrall 6- he struggled to settle , horrible back pass
Pirez 6- decent today though well protected in 5 man defence
Humphreys 6- bit haphazard but clearly has skill
Shelvey 6– good minutes and looked confident if a bit short of ball
Hannibal 8- probs best he’s been , all over and tackled well
Sarmiento 8- Best I’ve seen him , up for it and tricky , even with his “ Romanian barnet”
Benson 6- looked keen , not yet fully match fit
Barnes 5 - dreadful

Subs:
Esteve 7 steadied the ship
Bauress 7 looked right at home
Edwards 6 couple of runs and a goal

Dreadful? Put a sublime ball to Sarmiento which should have been an assist. Bullied their center halves for the whole second half and won many defensive headers off their set pieces. Also barked all night at our guys.

Hladky - 8 - Some great saves, moments of rustiness understandably.
Sonne - 8 - Defensively sound and attacked positively.
Worral - 8 - Solid leadership, again understandably a little rusty at times.
CJ - 8.5 - Usual excellent performance.
Humphreys- 8 - Very good game, his versaltility is an added bonus.
Pires - 8 - This formation suits him. Looked like a new player.
Shelvey - 7 - Obviously still getting upto fitness, when he does that will add another element to BFC.
Hannibal -9 - Everywhere - proving he is a great player and also grabbed the assist.
Sarmiento - 9 - Again, the formation suited him, very positive and similar to Hannibal he was everywhere.
Benson - 7 - Needs more fitness but good to have him available, should have scored.
Barnes - 9 - A proper centre forwards performance, Flemming should be in the 10 behind him.

Edwards - 8 - +1 Goal. Quality finish. Can he add the X factor? So far so good.
Bauress - 7 - Will be in the first team sooner rather than later.
Esteve -7 - Easy for him

Hladky 6, did the basics well but definitely looked nervous.. still remembering the Reading game I think.
Sonne 6
CJ 8.. man is a defensive machine.
Worrall 7
Humphreys 7
Pires 6.. a definite liability, wish his attacking game was more consistent
Shelvey 7.. good on the ball, broke the mould in trying to pass forward or spin forward on the ball.
Hannibal 8.. worked his socks off and never stopped trying.
Benson 6
Sarmiento 7.. worked hard like Hannibal, but I felt he ran without the same purpose Hannibal had.
Barnes 7.. great vocal presence, instructed the line well and kept the shape from the front.

Esteve 7.. reads the game so naturally.
Edwards 7
Bauress 6

Seems a bit strange giving the keeper 8 along with Sarmiento,I didn’t think he had much to do and made one bad mistake.

7 others also gave him an 8.

I thought he made some good saves and was very good with his feet.

A good few also gave him a 7.

Only 4 gave him a 6 out of about 20 ratings.

Enjoyed that. Think Shelvey could be a good signing purely for his forward-pass mindset. Thought Hladky was very good including on the ball (bar one hiccup). Good for Edwards to get off the mark and it was so promising to see Bauress’s desire to get on the ball.

Hladky 7 One or two dodgy moments but otherwise decent
Sonne 6 A bit more stretched than his debut.
Egan Riley 7 Captained the team and looks better all the time
Worrall 7 Decent. Saw a couple of comments slagging him off. Looks solid to me.
Pirez 7 One bursting run through the Soton back line had me wondering who he was.
Humphreys 7 I like Bash. He is maturing into a leader.
Shelvey 6 Some decent stuff but needs more match fitness
Hannibal 8* Fantastic today. Is getting better as the season goes along
Sarmiento 7 Best I've seen from him. Seemed fired up by his rivals- maybe we need to bus some Soton fans in each week?
Benson 6 Made of glass. Every time he goes down it seems like it could be game over. God we've missed his ability to beat a man though.
Barnes 6 A couple of good touches, but in all honesty he's pale imitation of his former self.

Subs:
Esteve 7 Class. Slotted in effortlessly. A real Rolls Royce of a player.
Bauress 7 This boy is a baller. Needs some minutes in the league.
Edwards 6 Was a bit off the pace (understandably) but showed great signs.
Redmond na Good to see him back. Could contribute as the season winds down

The 3511 system worked a treat today and the benefits of a proper striker (albeit an old one) leading the line was there for all to see. Our strength in depth is the best in the Championship now and I’m confident of finishing in a promotion place. That defence is like a brick wall.

"a sublime ball" ? he hooked it (perfectly well) down the centre. He messed up his only chance,he posed (s) literally zero goal threat,he's slower than possibly any player in the football leauge. He fell over embarrasingly a few times and was rarely in a position to "bully" anyone, but yes he did win a couple of headers against possibly one of the worst teams in PL history. To even say he's a pale shadow of his former self does diservice to the pale shadow. He played as he's our only no 9,which is of course hardly his fault.

Who knows he could yet play a small but vital part in the run in. While he's been a brilliant servant to the club (and he's certainly match fit) lets be under no illusion he's here as nothing more than a cheerleader.

One of those games that although not end to end you have to credit our players for coming here and not really looked like losing.

Good to have Benson back and after a nervy start he settled in well.

Barnes, Worral, Sonne, Bauress, Edwards and Redmond getting time in too.

Barnes
A lot of people don’t understand the game of a number 9 in certain games and in certain teams

What Barnes did yesterday has very few highlights but it’s 90 plus minutes of pure graft, mostly without the ball in possession or even in the vicinity and it’s occupies the opposition defence so that they don’t support their midfield and when their forward play breaks down leaves gaps to be exploited

Thankless task

On another day Sarmiento has awareness and earns Barnes the assist and or Barnes gets the Edwards on the line goal and he’s the hero

But in our current system at least you play 5 or more games like yesterday for 1 good game to come along if someone else or you don’t fluff your lines

Look at Chris Wood on the half way line fighting for scraps for us leading the line but running offside and then put into a team that gets him into the box he’s the man

Hladkey 7
Sonne 7
CJ 7
Worrall 6
Humphreys 7
Pires 7
Shelvey 7 good debut, obviously rusty but skill evident
Hannibal 8 that's how he needs to play, my mom
Barnes 6 grafted well
Sarmiento 8 his best game, must be the hair
Benson 6 rusty but good in bits
Esteve 7
Bauress 7 when he develops more pace, he will be a good 'un
Edwards 7 obviously got skill in abundance, could soon be a starter
A good more attacking display. Let' s keep it up in the Championship.

Hladky - 7 gives me the jippers
Sonne 8- very lively , looks a decent prospect
Egan Riley 8- steady eddie
Worrall 8- looked assured at the back
Pirez 7 - looks better in that position
Humphreys 7- solid
Shelvey 7 - nice touches, composed, faded second half
Hannibal 9- he was everywhere- would have been a ten if he would have scored- shoot man~!! - MOM
Sarmiento 9 - Ran the show in the second half, was surprised to see him subbed- best game to date for BFC
Benson 7- good to see him back, needs to build his confidence
Barnes 7- thought he did well as the lone striker.

Parker-9 great system and we actually used subs well and gave them time..
away fans- 10- great banter in the away end with lots of new songs coming from the lads at the back.

Hladky 7 - Handled well and feet were decent, a slight hiccup re the misunderstanding with Worrall when he was a bit indecisive (but made up for that with the ensuing save).
Sonne 6 - Sound & settling into our squad nicely, Roberts has a bit more going forward but Sonne could yet grab his spot.
Egan Riley 7 - Strong, sound performance again.
Worrall 7 - His experience is a good addition when one of the 2 regular CBs is absent.
Pirez 7 - Did well, as did...
Humphreys 7- Saints star man Dibling (& W-P) down that side & they coped very well once they settled to the task.
Shelvey 6 - Decent start in the team & hopefully better to come given his pedigree.
Hannibal 8 (MOM) - very energetic and intelligent performance. Always putting himself about to show for the ball and used it well.
Sarmiento 8 - Close contender with Hannibal for MoM, energetic and always looking to trouble the defenders.
Benson 6 - Did well on comeback, a bit tentative at times but promising show.
Barnes 7 - Not vintage but currently possibly our best option for lone striker, made plenty of runs and made defenders work when contesting headers.

Subs:
Esteve 7 - Did what we've come to expect.
Bauress 7 - Looked assured and busy again.
Edwards 7 - Promising start & topped off by the goal, looks like he'll become our best option down that side (though not faulting Bensons performance on the day)

Nice preparation and set-up by SP, well done to him for getting us through to round 5 of t'cup.

Southampton FC - I didn't realize they'd moved the away section from the north east corner to the south east corner and restricted various routes around the ground. Walked about a mile more than usual coming and going to the station.
I liked the rail seat experience (as I did at Pompey last week). Stewards/staff were good too.

I've just been going through the ratings and seen someone give Barnes a 5 and describe his performance as dreadful. For me, that performance from Barnes was getting close to his performances at Bournemouth (FA Cup) and Norwich two years ago. I thought he was exactly what we want him to be.

It can be a thankless task playing as a lone 9 in most teams and I think currently our conservative style of play increases the demands on that player
