Great decision from the ref, Preston player just gets the ball first

I thought that too but all the pundits thought the opposite. Even after watching all the angles it’s still a penalty to me, but hey I would say that I suppose.

A few seasons ago didn't Pope concede a penalty against Leeds despite winning the ball first?

Wasn't it given as a penalty because the referee thought Pope had used excessive force to win the wall.

Anywhere else on the pitch that's a free kick. He does not take the ball, it brushes his foot as Edwards dinks it over him and then is taken out.

He blatantly does get the ball. A somewhat fortunate and very slight touch, but a touch nonetheless.

Still surprised it wasn’t given - in real time you’d have to be Hawkeye to see the touch and the ref definitely wasn’t that.

That one was given specifically because the ref was *****. Same day we scored a goal he disallowed when Mee was bulldozed in the back of the head. It was either play on for a goal to us or a penalty (possibly a red card too.)

Obviously the ref gave a free kick to Leeds.

But the touch is ball to leg, and it’s after he’s fouled Edwards. Edwards plays the ball onto him, It’s a penalty. Otherwise you are saying you can pull anyone down, then just kick the ball

I've got to be honest I don't think it's a pen. I thought it was 100% when I first saw it but the first replay changed my mind. I'd be quite happy to be proven wrong and can see the other side of the argument. But if that was given against us I'd be furious.

Was at the game and I was the only one that said I didn’t think it wasn’t a penalty at the time, and having just seen it back I stand by that

It wasn’t orthodox, as it looks like the defender slipped, but he got the ball

It's not a tackle because the ball touched him on the way through. He's taken Edwards legs away from him as Edwards had control of the football. Its a stonewall penno.

He’s had the ball kicked into him (a brush), rather than ‘getting the ball’, it’s a poor tackle which he had no control over, and because of that he’s then fouled by tripping up Edwards who was getting past him.

But he got the ball, whether it was kicked into him or not. Admittedly, that was more by luck than judgement.

As I said, I think that in real time, it would usually be given. With the benefit of a replay, I dont think it should be.

Getting the ball is not catching a player and the ball clipping your heel. You cannot play the man first.

It’s a penalty.

No, no & no. He did not get the ball, he took the player first, he did not cleanly take the ball. He had no idea where the ball was. Edwards played the ball and it brushed his ankle. The only thing he took, was Edwards.

If that was a penalty, the Trafford should be punished at the other end for taking out their player.

It seems pretty likely to me that the referee wasn't thinking about a bad decision in totally different circumstances 5 years ago when making his decision.

Post by SurreyClaret » Sat Feb 15, 2025 3:38 pm

It's a clear penalty, due to the challenge being careless, the attacker was clearly taken out by the sliding defender. The fact that the ball was touched first is completely irrelevant and not stated anywhere in the laws of the game - every pundit should be sent on a course to educate them what is and isn't a foul - they have peddled this ball first nonsense that every fan/player/manager quotes.

The ball being touched first is not in the laws of football and completely irrelevant if the defender is careless (foul), reckless (foul and yellow), or uses excessive force (foul and red card). In this case, he clearly went to ground taking out the player, which in my opinion is careless, a penalty and no card. There is always a level of subjectivity but I think if you take the ball touch out of the equation, it's hard to argue the challenge wasn't careless.

There is a 2nd reason the penalty should have been given and that's because the defender wasn't in control of the ball in the process of the tackle - as Scott said, the attacker played the ball onto him, so the touch wasn't intentional and wasn't a tackle. The attacker clearly is taken out and their progress can't continue onwards - like someone else said, it's a foul everywhere else on the pitch, so should have been given as a penalty.

I'm a Youth Coach and I was educated on this by a referee, and I had for most of my life thought that touching the ball first was the key factor, but it isn't. If you look at the laws and go through the decision making process that the Refs should go through, he's made a mistake, maybe two here, or he's bottled the decision.

All I'm pointing out is that you can get the ball the first, but still be penalised if the ref thinks excessive force is used.

A player getting to the ball first can still give away a penalty in certain circumstances, as the laws of the game imply..

At the end of the day the officials seen the touch by the defender and had one chance to look at it with it being late in the game has to be a factor as well even subconsciously the decision has to be right. I don’t think VAR would turn that decision round neither so I think on balance the ref made the right decision at that moment and overall I think he had a decent game.

How often does a ref give a foul for a defender winning the ball from behind / from the side while making contact with the opposing player... what's the difference?

Wrong. What's plainly obvious is most people don't know the laws of football - please read my post above.
