Re: Trafford/Pope swap
Was thinking this yesterday whilst game was on.
If pope wants first team football and we go up, I'd be happy with that. He's poor with his feet in comparison to traff but that will/should be OK in prem because imo we shouldn't be bringing teams on to us in the Premier like we do now, we are just not good enough and will get picked off.

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
Is this so the Geordies can save some money on the JT fee? The last thing we need is Newcastle trying to drop the JT fee by £5-10m by chucking Pope in.
If JT goes then we need to get the maximum fee available and stop doing Newcastle deals on our players. Great player for us Pope, but he will be 33 by the time next season starts, he is not the future.

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
33 is still a very good age for a goalkeeper. It will suit us because our goal for the first 2 years is survival. Pope has that experience that we will need in that first season back.

I would imagine a team better than us would take Pope if he became available. Certainly if we don’t go up.

Too injury prone now, we don't need a keeper with a dodgy shoulder. Would imagine he is on big wages up there that we couldn't afford even if we went back up....gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 1:19 pm33 is still a very good age for a goalkeeper. Re: Trafford/Pope swap
His kicking is so poor that it makes it difficult to play put from the bag like we do. It's incredible that he seems unable to improve it to a least a competent level.
Re: Trafford/Pope swap
I think people are remembering the old Pope that was an incredible goalkeeper but that was 3 years ago. Doesn’t look the same player to me and spent large spells out injured.
Re: Trafford/Pope swap
I’d have a look at Joe Whitworth from Palace, on loan at Exeter. Looks a very good young keeper, made his PL debut for Palace at 19 years old (he’s 20 now).
Re: Trafford/Pope swap
Trafford is worth less than £5m. £30m plus pope wouldn't be too bad, although I don't think pope is what we will want as a replacement. We are better than that now
Re: Trafford/Pope swap
No. I’d want good money for JT that can used to strengthen. Pope has shocking distribution with his feet and he doesn’t look the same player to me. Id stick with our Hladky and look at others. I thought it was a mistake letting Vigouroux go, his distribution with his feet is really good together with his overall keeping which we saw when Swansea played us at the turf.
Re: Trafford/Pope swap
I don’t know anything about him, but one thing last season told us was that you can’t just throw a promising goalkeeper in, in the Premier League, and expect him to do well.
Admittedly, Trafford was thrown under a bus, but it was still a lot to ask from a young man who had been playing in League One the season before.

Whatever you think about Pace, his tenure has been a huge boost to the people who only want to sign ex-Burnley players

What is the rumoured buy back clause with Man City? I’m sure I’d seen it suggested it was upwards of £40m.

Nonsense aside... things are worth what people will pay.
Trafford is therefore worth at least 3 times that, as shown by the reported bids.
If we hit May with fewer than 15 goals conceded, then I would imagine it would be 4, 5 or even 6 times more than that
But even if a club hadn't bid £15m+, there's no way an English keeper, with PL experience, at that age, having been in the England squad, and part of the meanest defence in Europe would only be worth £5m. That's laughable

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
Pope played this weekend there’s no way he’ll come back to Burnley ,lots of our players have left and since then the club has had a complete change in management and style and playing staff ,if any of them came back who were here in the Dyche era they would only see the buildings and the fans that were the same.

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
He isn't the future nobody has suggested he is. Some keepers can keep going well into their thirties & in the meantime he does the job whilst you look for a younger understudy. It depends how much goes either way whether it's a good deal & makes sense.Poulton-le-Claret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 1:16 pmIs this so the Geordies can save some money on the JT fee? Re: Trafford/Pope swap
Chelsea are desperate for a new keeper
Man United's isn't good
City have the buy back and are clearly in the process of introducing young players
Newcastle want a new keeper
The price should be well north of 30 for Trafford
And no, we don't want to include Pope in the deal.

£42m (£14m x 3).
Although I imagine it’s variable so if we’ve paid another £1m in add-ons then it could be £45m?

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
This is the main point, no chance.
At his age he wouldn’t be giving any up, wouldn’t want to be reducing them and with his injury record would be far too risky for us.
Did the keepers Parker had worked with previously at Bournemouth end up moving in summer? I’d guess they’d be top choice?

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
I love Pope and would welcome his return. However I think Newcastle realise his value has dropped in the time they bought him. Firmly now the England team forgotton keeper and I doubt he would be a regular first teamer in the PL with the majority of PL teams. He could become a "Hennessy" ie a second choice keeper in the PL

Fair enough if you think it makes sense, I disagree.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 2:42 pmHe isn't the future nobody has suggested he is. If I take the emotion out of it and look at it objectively, yes he is a solid GK, but he is very injury prone. He is also poor with his feet, so that doesn't work in our current system. That's before asking him to drop his c£60k a week wages. I doubt he would leave for less money when he's still got a year to run on that deal.

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
I only said it makes sense dependant on the money involved with both players going in opposite directions. Until that happens (if it ever does) it's impossible to say. Please read my posts & don't guess!Poulton-le-Claret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 3:13 pmFair enough if you think it makes sense, I disagree.

There's talk of a handicap system next year in the Premier League where the three promoted teams will be allowed to play with two goalkeepers, Pope and Muric back would be ideal.

Would he take a big drop in ages? He seems to be injured more than fit, plus he’s too old even for us now. It’s a “no” from me.

Traff is worth £40m but I personally wouldn't take Nick back too much of s risk.Top money from Newcastle though who took the pxxx with our Pope giveaway.Maybe Burnley born Barnes and £35m would be more use?

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
Well i think it is a darn shame we will be losing Trafford.
I think he should stay with us if we are promoted.
However i am a realist and maybe we could agree to bring back Pope to the Burnley Conclave!

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
I would say his kicking and distribution has improved greatly from what I’ve seen since his return from injury.
Re: Trafford/Pope swap
Keepers play until late thirties at least. Pope will be great again.Poulton-le-Claret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 1:16 pmIs this so the Geordies can save some money on the JT fee? The last thing we need is Newcastle trying to drop the JT fee by £5-10m by chucking Pope in.

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
I've not seem him since the injury but I'd be fairly confident it hasn't. He's spent years unsuccessfully trying to learn basic competency in kicking a football.
Some people just aren't built for it and he's one of them.

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
What I haven't seen anyone mention regards Trafford but I think is a real possibility especially regards Newcastle is that I think wherever he ends up CJ will end up to. Just a feeling I have and may be way off. I just think any club swould love to boost there home grown quota and getting in a GK at a top fee and then a young centre half at a tribunal fee would suit most and enable them to pay top whack for Trafford. Somebody like Howe who seems to like an English core will be considering this

Seen this potential swap mooted a few times elsewhere on social media.
I do wonder though how many people would be as enthusiastic about it if Pope didn't have that certain playedforburnleybeforeness about him...

Re: Trafford/Pope swap
Trying to be realistic about Trafford and have to admit he’s come on leaps and bounds since last season however the guys and the system he’s playing behind are much better than last season ,and the amount of shots he’s had to stop is a small percentage compared to VK being in charge,if we go up and SP uses a similar set up then I think staying with us another season would give us a better idea how good he really can be,and provided we don’t get stuffed every week his stock will continue to rise .If he does leave he definitely needs to go to one of the top clubs and not be in a relegation scrap with one of the canon fodder, and finish up as a nervous wreck as he became when Kompany was here.
