Next seasons full backs

Post by Woodleyclaret » Wed Mar 05, 2025 7:21 am

Imo we need a left and right back both present incumbents look shaky at times.Roberts drifts off his man as he did allowing Cardiffs winger to get a cross in.Pires has problems with distribution often dallying on the ball and finally backpassing.

Roberts was poor last night but he’s generally been very good this season.

Depends which we’re division we’re in as to what we need at right back.

We need a left back regardless.

I'm hoping we tie Roberts down to another year. Good player.

Other than that, we probably need to add.

Is Bashir not an obligation to buy at the end of the season? 12 mill?

Humphreys is signing and he’s a top talent.

If we go up, two starting 11 quality full backs should be top of the list alongside a striker.

I’d expect him to be our left sided centre back next season.

I’m actually OK with Pires if we’re in the Championship again next season. I don’t think he’s been anywhere near as bad as is made out.

I’ve been saying how much we need Roberts over the last few weeks ,I don’t know if it was playing against his boyhood club’s biggest rivals but he seemed very subdued ,there were a couple of times players went in heavy on him and he got straight back up where normally he goes down like he’s been shot and winds the other team up.

Roberts was stitched up by Edwards for the goal!

Roberts has always been underrated by Burnley fans. One of if not the best right back at Championship level since we signed him.

Roberts is the best right back in the division, he was last time too. Unfortunately he is one of those players who isn't quite good enough for the level above it, despite being outstanding in this league. I would absolutely say we should be doing everything to keep him as he's a good sort and valuable if we were to come straight back down again.

He was in the Championship team of the season in 22/23...

Who would you say is a better right back than Roberts? Please don't say Jayden Bogle!

Nothing demonstrates the drop in quality of the Championship in the last few years more than Connor Roberts being possibly the best right back in the league.

Last night was I feel a blip for Roberts-on his day he is a huge asset to our team. Is he the best RB in the Championship ? For me Bogle of Leeds is this season a strong contender and only cost Leeds £5m

Roberts is really, really good in this league.

He’s near enough a guaranteed 7 or 8 every game. Just not last night.

Really? Wow, that's unreal. He's a top end Championship right back. He's like Brownhill in as much as he doesn't have the quality to step up to the PL, but he's a quality Championship player. He throws the odd poor game in now and then, but he's usually a 7 every week, and when he's good he's outstanding. He was arguably player of the season under Kompany, certainly from Christmas onwards. Far from bobbins. He'll be a big loss when he goes.

Both Roberts and Brownhill are good enough to play in the premier league. They've already proven that. I don't understand this take, although granted i must note it is a popular opinion.

Roberts is a top player at this level. I'm not sure how anybody could objectively dispute that. I'm sure Sonne would also be fine if Roberts leaves. Whether either is really Premier League standard is debatable, but it's a huge leap in quality and physicality and if you're surrounded by players who are also struggling it is bound to lead to more errors.

Left back is definitely more of an issue. Pires is okay, nowhere near as bad as some make out but has struggled a bit at times. Humphreys arguably would be a better bet at left back if we're promoted than at this level, where the focus would be more on his defensive attributes than what he offers in possession.

Mixed reports but all the journos close to Chelsea reported it was an obligation regardless.

How has Robert's proven that. He's got 2 relegation from 2.
The first one he hardly played and when he did get his chance was really poor defensively. The second one he ended up getting loaned out back to the Championship.
Let's be honest, his 2 PL seasons for us could hardly have gone any worse.

Why would we care about Leeds fans? I've watched him enough myself. He was in the PFA team of the season under Kompany for a reason. He was the best right back in the league. He was outstanding against Hull a few weeks ago so I'm not even harking back like some do about other players (Foster and Aston Villa springs to mind!). I didn't realise he was someone who divided opinion to be honest. I thought he was fairly well regarded across the board so I'm surprised by your comments. Each to their own though, football is about opinions after all.

Since when did getting relegated make a player not of the required standard? Are we also saying Esteve or Trafford aren't Premier League standard too then? Of course not.

On personal performance they've struggled but certainly not to the extent where you can categorically say they aren't of that competition's standard though. In my opinion of course.

I wasn’t sure how many of these “obligations” only kick in if we go up. Flemming and Anthony loans were also said to include an “obligation”.

I think too suggest Roberts is premier league quality is a little daft at this point.

We know he’s not. He has two full seasons at that level and has never looked good enough.

On the flip side there’s very little evidence that either Esteve or Trafford are premier league quality as well. They both had pretty poor stints in that league a year ago. They might have developed into premier league talent but right now not sure there is any evidence to suggest so.

That’s the point it depends how they do if we are in the prem next season.

The evidence to date suggests they will struggle in the prem. if they have another bad season in the prem they could quite easily end up at championship clubs

Better than saying Esteve is going to be a top defender at somewhere like Liverpool

It’s called realism

So there is no inbetween. Because he isn't at Liverpool's level there is no evidence that he could play at a higher level.

I get you have a downer on pretty much every Burnley player but you have some weird views. Enzo at Sunderland is a world beater at this level despite there being no evidence of this and not doing much since arriving, Edwards the same despite there being no evidence, you must have been puzzled that he wasn't a stand out player against Cardiff last night. In fact the only player I think you have bigged up was shipped out on loan within 6 months despite with no evidence claiming he would bag 20 goals this season. He probably hasn't got 20 goals in his career.

You could make an educated guess using physical attributes etc.

Esteve has the physical attributes to make that step up. Roberts doesn’t.

Esteve is demonstrating mental attributes above his current level of football. Roberts is just about meeting those and was found wanting at a higher level.

Roberts moaned and waved his arms around a lot more in Premier League than he does in the Championship. That tells me he’s stretched mentally and emotionally at the higher level, whilst acknowledging it was a poor team setup.

It’s fair to say Esteve has a much higher ceiling than Roberts.

Can’t fault Pires and his work effort other than that he doesn’t add anything in o the defensive unit .

Roberts is the best right back in the division, he was last time too. Unfortunately he is one of those players who isn't quite good enough for the level above it, despite being outstanding in this league. I would absolutely say we should be doing everything to keep him as he's a good sort and valuable if we were to come straight back down again.
Sure…but he was on the bench often during his loan last year

I’d expect him to be our left sided centre back next season.

I’m actually OK with Pires if we’re in the Championship again next season. I don’t think he’s been anywhere near as bad as is made out.
2 strikers!

Yes he clearly does have a higher ceiling. My point is there’s not a lot of evidence to suggest they will make it in the prem at the moment.

They very well might be excellent next year after a great season at this level. But I think pretty much the entire squad showed last year that they weren’t premier league players and I don’t get where all this confidence has come from.

Comments like Steve is going to be an elite footballer are just nonsense at this moment in time.

Just out of interest, would you say that comments about Esteve becoming an elite footballer are more or less nonsense than Hountondji scoring 20 goals or Lyle Foster being the best centre forward in the league?

I think someone with a history of posts such as yours, probably doesn't have much right to call anyone else's comments "nonsense"

Mine were a lot more realistic than Esteve going to be an elite CB.

I’ll take that bet.
