Peter Lever RIP

Todmorden born Peter Lever died earlier today, an excellent fast bowler in the 60s/70s for Lancashire and England, deserved more caps. Retired to Rochdale area I believe.

Went to school with his brother Roger. used to open the batting with him for the school team, he was a batsman who bowled a bit, and yes they were both yorkies.

Had a brother Colin who played minor counties cricket then a very successful professional at Heywood.

I had back operation back in the day aged 21, following a cricket injury. Peter's wife was the Ward sister. She told him about me and he came in to see me.

Statham & Higgs were outstanding but never won anything playing for Lancs, both left before we started winning the one day competitions in the John Player League and the Gillette Cup. Statham in particular was a bit special.

Remembering that era of Lancs cricket is like looking back at the Clarets of 73, such a wonderful balanced team, and successful.

On his day he was as good as anyone to watch

Clive Hubert Lloyd was insanely good. I shudder to think what he would have done with a modern bat! Brilliant fielder too and a more than useful bowler before injury hit

The first time I saw Clive Hubert was playing for Haslingden in the Lancashire League. He looked the most unlikely of cricketers but I saw him take an absolutely stunning catch in the covers. The Burnley batsman looked bemused, the ball had hardly lifted off the ground.

Later that year, I saw him play in an International Cavaliers game at Southport and saw him out bat the brilliant Gary Sobers as both got into the 80s.

Right up there as one of my all time favourite cricketers.
