Maison Hugill

Post by mikeS » Thu Apr 10, 2025 6:40 pm

Looks like we have lost another local business in Burnley as Maison Hugill hairdressers is now closed.

Amazed the barber lasted so long, especially with the number in town now.
I'm in my late 60's and remember being taken there by my Dad for haircut in the late 1960's until Dad decided to use the barber shop in Rosegrove....

I think it’s a shame that local businesses close, but they also have to keep with the times. I mean, metal bars on the windows doesn’t signal ‘come in here for a nice skin fade.’

Looks prime to turn into a dive bar serving one kind of lager, White or Red wine choice, hot nuts, and sport on a single telly

The lady who has just retired from the shop, is Cathy the daughter of the previous owner,Ted, who was the son of Joseph Hugill who set up the hairdressing business in 1918.
Been in the town a long time wouldn’t you say.

To be fair, metal bars on the windows says more about the people on the outside than the inside.

Lass who ran it after her dad retired is a nice lady. Clarets fan too.

Good luck to her in her retirement.

It's a long time since I have seen that. I think it is still a barbers but the Burnley shirt must be going back 10-15 years or so.

I think you are confusing it with shops like these - claiming takings of £100-£150k per month. It amazes me how long it takes for the penny to drop with law enforcement, when it is blatantly obvious what a lot of these "Turkish" barbers, takeaways, nail shops, hand car washes and many other cash only businesses really are. Fronts for illegal drugs, tobacco and vape sales, money laundering, illegal immigration, modern slavery and wholesale tax evasion.

As long as the govt continue to get their 20% of the takings, don’t expect any wholesale changes. The “blind eye” will continue….

Its still there I think, on Cambridge Rd. The Burnley top went about 10 years ago I think.
There must be about 20 barbers in Hitchin which is crazy for a population of about 30,000?
My days of visiting the barbers are well gone, covid lockdown made us realise how much money I was wasting - just head into the garden and let the mrs shave me.

Looks like it closed soon after the Boer war. Always sad to see an old local business close , but time moves on. Seems at last the old bill are starting to arrest /investigate the whole barber / vape shop/mini market scam . Industrial scale for sure .

I suppose the owners didn't deem it worthwhile upgrading the shop front in view of it's location. Too the rear of that prime hotel site aka The Keirby Hotel which is still standing in the same derelict condition unfortunately.

There’s a cafe/bar next to the studio I use in Leeds. I made the mistake of trying to enter for a drink one day, it’s never seen a customer in it’s existence.

Used to go there as a boy with my dad and loved hearing all the Burnley chat around the shop.

That building is full of history, shame it can’t be preserved. Much more atmosphere and heritage than a money laundering barbers could dream of.

I used to visit Hitchin regularly about 15 years ago which is when it would have been in the shop.

Mad how quickly time disappears.

But, but, but support small local businesses, that's what you need to do.

Even if they don't move with the times or offer equivalent comfort and services.
