Maatsen

Post by warksclaret » Sat Apr 19, 2025 6:00 pm

I always look out for Maatsen when Villa are on SKY ,as a footballer I really admired him when he played for us,but he appears to be a major weak link in the Villa back four. He put no challenge at all for a ball that Schar headed in for Newcastle's goal-he simply lost his man.I have seen him be at fault in previous games and his £35m purchase price is starting to look somewhat inflated. Surprised he is getting the game time he is, when Digne is the man he is keeping out. It goes to show the difference between PL and Championship.

The Premier League is the land of giants, something we will hopefully need to address this summer

To survive as a premier league player you either need to be a 6ft+ physical specimen (most of Newcastle’s team), or you need to be a player of exceptional technique with endless energy for pressing (most of Bournemouth’s team).

Maatsen just about makes it into the latter category for me.

I’d have him and Tella back next year if we are promoted and if deals ls could be done. Imagine them in a settled squad.

Even though he's a defender on the team sheet, I think his possession and positioning makes up for defensive weaknesses. I always like watching him - he's a really intelligent player - and I think he was underappreciated by some Burnley fans.

......loved him when we had him & he's made the step-up. He rarely gives the ball away with a bad pass.........he's a terrific player!

Wonderful player. Watching him with us for a season was a privilege.

Its obvious what I need to do now. Simply criticise our starting 11 before the game on Monday :D

His purchase price was inflated, by £15-£20m I seem to remember. An FFP dodge with the young lad from Villa going the other way.
