Brownhill

Post by jedi_master » Tue Apr 22, 2025 9:36 am

Will he sign a deal now? What do we think?

Whatever people's issues with his performances at times in the Premier League for us, he has been absolutely outstanding this season and has been a credit to the club in how he conducts himself and so on since he walked through the door. He is the skipper, he's Parker's man and the squad clearly love him. I think he'd be a massive loss personally and really hope something is going to be sorted.

I think he's probably going. Hopefully not - be great if we could get both him and CJER signed up

Would have been so good if when he was doing the post match interview on the pitch he announced he’d signed a contact

Heard via his old man that he’s looking elsewhere, but hopefully the promotion can sway things back this way.

16 goals now for the season, his best ever. Like you say it would be a loss to take that away, along with all the other intangibles mentioned.

I could see him fancying playing in Europe.

He’ll have a lot of options and he’s in a perfect position for negotiating himself a great deal.

If he stays I’ll be happy. If he goes he’ll absolutely leave with nothing but gratitude for what he’s given the club. He’s been a fantastic player for us, and as you say, is a credit to the club on and off the pitch.

The captains armband in the PL would get him a salary he couldn’t get in Europe. Hope he stays.

I still think he will leave but wherever he finds himself he will be warming a bench for a significant part of his time there. If he doesn't want to play with us there is no point clamouring for him to stay. Leaving on good terms is far better for both parties than staying begrudgingly.

Clearly loves the club, he's in he's comfort zone and although he will more than likely fancy a move, I'm not sure he'll want to step out of it, would be a massive wrench imo, and may not be the same player elsewhere. Be a huge decision for him.

Hope he stays, but if he is to leave, he leaves with our best wishes.

If he leaves, we have a huge job in replacing him - he has that knack of scoring, even in the PL he manages to bag.

He scored 6 goals in 111 Premier League appearances - I hardly class that as a knack of scoring. He has been excellent this season in the Championship, which I feel is his level, but if you look at his career record, this season is a blip. He has scored almost a third of his total career league goals this season 16/52. 52 league goals in 12 seasons and over 400 appearances for an attacking midfielder isn't really setting any records. As evidenced in the last 2 Premier League season where Brownhill was almost ever present, we were short of an athletic, physical box to box midfielder with pace (and I know every team wants one of these and they come at a cost). Brownhill isn't this and neither is Josh Cullen. If we go into next season with these 2 as our starting central midfielders, expect a similar outcome to our last 2 seasons in the Premier League.

A significant amount of those PL appearances are coming off the bench, others playing in a deeper/different role.

Last time we were up, he bagged 4 in a deeper role, which is a good effort in the PL.

He's clearly playing in his prime and his levels/attacking output have gone up from the 22/23 season onwards.

He'll be a big loss, but he's never set the PL alight before, so it could be an opportunity for us to bring in a proper number 10.
He was linked with a few Italian clubs earlier in the season (Fiorentina and Lazio I believe). Florence or Burnley... it's a tough choice

18 of his appearances for Burnley are from the subs bench, so 90% of his league appearances for us were in the starting 11. As i said he has been excellent this season but for me always came up short in our Premier League seasons.

Perhaps playing under a manager who played the midfield role at the highest level has brought out the best in Brownhill? Encouraging him to get into more advanced positions when the scoring opportunities have presented themselves and he has been able to convert many of them to become our leading scorer.

I'd love him to stay but I think it would take a very special offer from the club to make him sign a new contract. He's been immense this season both as a goalscorer and influence in the squad.

I'm a big fan of Brownhill but I think it might serve all parties well if he moves on this Summer.

Going into the Premier League with a midfield combo that we know isn't quite good enough, who are captain and vice captain, and one armed with a brand new contract and whatever expectations come with that is going to restrict Parker's options and potentially create some awkward situations when tough decisions have to be made. Plus that new contract won't be cheap for a 29 year old in his current position.

If Browny fancies Champions League football in front of 60k supporters and Celtic is on the table for him, it might be best if he pursues that dream, & leaves on a high. Big boots to fill though, obviously.

If he stays it says a huge amount about Parker and what he has created.

Have to say that if he believes he will be leaving he has handled himself in an utmost professional way, particularly last night

Been told as far back as 18 months ago that he wouldn't be signing on and fancies playing abroad.

You'd wager that any club in Arabia could offer him a package that matches or exceeds anything we could, especially with tax brought into it.

I couldn't begrudge him it, though I do hope another tilt at the PL gives him pause for thought.

Again, played on the right first season with Dyche, then in a deeper role.

Berge has been great in the PL but has scored less than Brownhill in similar apps. I'm confident that he can score goals in a more advanced midfield role like he has been playing this season.

He scored 4 last year, which were quarter/half chances at best. That's good going in CM for a relegated team.

If it’s true which seems about right you would think, then he goes with all our best wishes. I doubt we go straight back up without him this year. Just hope he doesn’t regret playing another season in the most watched league in the world. If it’s Saudi I get a that line your pockets for 3 year who wouldn’t.

I would... If JB's going to play in the Premiership next season, I would think (subject to salary) that he'd be as well playing for Burnley rather than anyone else who's likely to be interested in him; I reckon he'd get more game-time here and very likely the captaincy again too.
That said, should he choose to go elsewhere I can see Hannibal taking Brownhill's role (OK, not the captaincy bit) with Laurent starting more often as we're likely to be defending a lot more next season.
As others have said already, should Josh Brownhill choose to leave he would do so with my blessing and best wishes for the future; JB's done his bit and more for the club.

Interesting about VK's style, extremely rigid, all week working in training to move the ball exactly as instructed during all phases when in possession of the ball...

You can see when you're struggling or the plan isn't working, players may second-guess themselves and hesitate.

Think that rigid style of play will only ever get a team so far - you need some level of individual freedom, imo.

I love Brownhill, and he's saved our bacon on a few occasions this year with his goals. He's certainly improved his timing and positioning in terms of arriving in the box, I don't see why he can't contribute more than he has previously in the PL.

That said, he doesn't have the physicality, pace (or make up for it with guile) you need in the Premier league. If you offered me a swap, Brownhill for Berge, I'd snap your hand off. It's a conundrum for me. But if he wants to stay, I'd love him in the squad.

We've seen enough of Brownhill in both the championship and the PL to know that he's excellent in one and can absolutely boss it, but struggles in the other and only tends to have his best games against teams very near the bottom. Tbf, I think Cullen is very much the same unfortunately.

He reckons Parker is the best manager he has had and so from that point of view a move anywhere would likely be a downgrade in terms of his playing enjoyment. I think, as others have touched on, it’s harsh to criticise his goal contributions at prem levels when the team has either not been good enough, not had enough possession of the ball, tried to outplay better teams with lesser players or he has been played on the right. The current manager understands his position better than either of the other managers and we may have seen that influence on his improvement this season. It will be interesting to see if he stays but we will definitely miss his current contribution to the team if he goes.

Berge is a funny one. He's undoubtedly a talented player and I liked him a lot but I'm not sure how much impact he actually has on games. He doesn't score or assist, isn't a destroyer or do the Cullen role of receiving the ball out from the back line.

I guess an upgraded Laurent is the closest fit.

I thought Cullen did improve as the season went on last time in the top flight albeit after a very shaky start by his standards (perhaps he wasn't match fit earlier on?)

Berge has played in 25 of Fulham's 33 PL matches so he's certainly seen as being good enough for them

Amazing season, clearly has a great relationship with Parker and the players love him.

Maybe one to (try!) and take the emotion out of - physically/athletically he can’t compete with premier league midfielders and hasn’t set the world alight in recent seasons in that league. He’s also turning 30 in December.

However that needs weighing up against the cost of replacing him, when we already have a few positions that need upgrading.

He is probs worth 2 more years - a crack at the prem again this season and keep him if we go down, if he wanted 3/4 years I’d shake hands and wish him the very best I think.

There is a saying, if you do what you have always done, you will get what you've always got. We have been relegated twice from the Premier League in the past 3 years with Brownhill as a regular midfielder. Once alongside Westwood/Cork and once alongside Cullen/Berge. The constant in these combinations is Brownhill.

He even admits himself on the podcast he's not great technically but hard work is what's made him a living. We need better if we are serious about staying up and pushing on in the Prem.

Technically not great in terms of what Cullen does in controlling a game of football and picking up the ball from deep, but arguably, technically, the best finisher/ball striker at the club. A real gift in knowing which positions to take up in the box. Brownhill could have more goals this season if other players had been able to lift their heads up at certain times and pick him out.

I think he really comes into his own in that forward position

Certainly two of those three. I suspect we'll be able to offer him as much if not more than Celtic
We can offer more than Celtic

Celtic yearly wage bill for 2025 £19,791,720

Highest earner iCameron Carter-Vickers on £37,000 per week.
