Leaving Early

I know this topic has been covered to death but there is a couple that sit near me that always leave on the 85th minute whatever the circumstances of the game. Unbelievably last Monday, on the 85th minute they get up and leave? Surely of all the games you'd stay to see your side promoted, isn't that what it's all about?

I mean each to their own but it just doesn't compute with me.

Some would rather be home 10 minutes early than watch us get promoted. I don't get it either.

Some people have to rely on public transport.

Others don't like to be caught in traffic etc. If you live locally (let's say, within 30 miles of Turf Moor) and it takes, for example, an hour to get home because of an accident or a bad weather then it's frustrating. But if you live 200-300+ miles away and your journey is extended by an hour it's a much worse prospect.

It is entirely possible that this man or woman are from another planet and only have 200 minutes of breathing time outside before they need to be re-incubated and back to their home which is pressurised to their home worlds atmosphere ...

And for those who have never had to travel hundreds of miles to visit the Turf - leaving 1 or 2 minutes early can be the difference between getting straight away and being caught for 30-60 minutes on top of a journey that is already hundreds of miles and several hours long.

I don't quite understand missing a promotion party, but we're unlikely to know the reasons unless said person posts.

People always get on their high horse whenever someone mentions this but personally I agree…. It’s nuts !
Imagine missing our winner at home to Rotherham under Kompany for example, or even Benson’s screamer v Sheff Weds this year.

It is strange to leave early in a game with the magnitude of Monday.

Even worse are the people who make their way down to the exit then stand there and watch for a few minutes. My daughter missed Barnes’ goal v Luton because of this and when I tapped the chap on the shoulder to advise him of this his reply was “Well, you can always stand up if you can’t see”.

They might really enjoy the football and the day as a whole but leave early to avoid the crush. Some folk have a strong aversion to being caught in the swell of a moving crowd as might be experienced when several thousand people leave at the same time through the same few exits.

In a crowd of 20,000, it's pretty likely some people will have commitments to be somewhere by a certain time which are more important than seeing the end of a 2nd division football match.

However, going back to the original post, a couple leaving after 85 minutes every game are almost certainly looking to avoid traffic.

Seems odd but people have their own reasons. You never know what is going on in peoples lives. I went for a pee after about 20 mins of the first half and some were just having a leisurely pint in the concourse without any intention of rushing back into the game. That seems strange as they could have watched on tv at home.

I don’t like doing it but on the odd occasion when the result is not in doubt I leave in added time…certainly not on Monday though! I have a 260 mile drive home and as others have said a few minutes can make a big difference.

Depends where you come from. I know if I were to leave 5 mins early, I'd get home 20 mins early.
It's strange in the circumstances of Monday, but you can't judge people unless you are aware of the reasons.

They were people also leaving after the game because they didn’t know how long it would take to clear the pitch and for the players to come back out due to the selfishness of the few making thousands of other fans having to wait.

How long did it take to clear the pitch? Ten/fifteen mins?

You can get to the motorway on empty roads in that time.

Each to their own, I wouldn't do it personally but I'd rather take the approach that I appreciate them turning up every other week for 85 minutes than bashing them for leaving early.

Never would I leave early and we had a 250mlie home journey to follow.Now we are 40mins away but I still never leave early.
I know people have reasons but I did think it strange on Monday when folks left 10mins from the end.

I’m normally each to their own, but genuinely couldn’t understand it when I saw about a dozen people making their way down the stairs in the JHU with a few minutes to go on Monday.

Having thought about it since I suppose there’s a few reasons why you might need to leave - caring responsibilities, work etc

A lot of them on Monday were probably Sheff Utd fans who couldn't get tickets in the away end and so bought tickets in the home stands. Don't blame them for wanting to shoot off early

I've usually been a totally Don't leave early type.... however, I am now aware of a couple of people in my personal life / friends circle who get completely freaked out by crowds and the experiences they can bring - consequently, we quite often now leave either before the end, or way after the end, depending on the game situation (sometimes it's Rugby union, so I am fully in support of the early leaving, sometimes it's racing and I can be ambivalent to it, and sometimes it's football and we stay until crowds have dispersed) - but I reckon if you're elderly, you might not want to sit out in the cold for that longer period.

Back in 2006, my brother took my son (age 5 at the time) on to the Preston game cos I couldn't make it. Went 1-2 down in the 80th minute and my brother decided it was time to go and dragged my lad with him. They heard the equaliser go in just as they got to the car and the winner went in just as they got to Dunnockshaw! Funnily enough, my lad has never left a game early since although it took some doing keeping him from a leaving a few games early last season

Equally, everybody is entitled to their opinion that it’s strange to leave 10 minutes early in a tight game in a promotion decider. Per the OP, doesn’t compute with me either.

I'm frail and the unsympathetic crush at the end of the match is an accident waiting to happen.

There is a long tradition at the Turf of leaving early. The gates used to be thrown open mid way through the second half. This let the early leavers out and the poor in.

I'm not great at night driving so again its better for all that I clear out ahead of the crowd after one of those too many under the lights games.

Some of our matches this season have been so deadly boring I don't understand why anyone has wanted to doze to the end.

Having travelled 235 miles each way, myself, each match, then ladt thought in my head, is to leave early and miss anything! I stayed on Monday to cheer on than applaud our heroes. 235vmiles later, I was still happy.

I took the scenic route back to M6 via Long Preston, which was a pain, as Long P was closed and a long, diversion in narrow roads.

We still won though and got promoted and I saw it all.

Its not for me sticking your head over, its reasons why for you and others leave early for several years when my Dad came on we had to leave early or leave late as if he was bumped he could and did fall \, most people tried to help and give him space but once out you still have lots of people moving at speed to get home.
Again I dont have the problem of driving at night but am aware of lots who do ,and lots who hate driving in traffic.
This season I have struggled with arthritus in my knees and cant move as quick as I once did so often ill get up from my seat (end of a row in Bob lord) and head to the exit when the last min of added time comes up and stand as far back as I can so others can see until the whistle is blown, the 30 seconds it gives me gets me down the steps and out of the ground and on my way before the main rush if Im driving that 30 seconds gets me out on the road and home to Rishton in 20 mins, if I dont and stop to clap its 35 to 45 mins. if Im not driving im in the pub before most and can get the first round in.
So whilst I don't get it leaving early , I can understand people who do. In the 1970s I once left when we were 2;0 down at home and when't to bems to get a new Subbuteo and an airfix model head to the bus station and full time Burnley 3;2 winners so would not leave before full time without a real important reason.
