Would our owners know past players?
After watching today's episode of the Overlap with Ruud Gullit, he speaks of being at a UEFA cup draw or similar. He went over to meet the new Chelsea owners, who hadn't a clue who he was or that he played and managed Chelsea.
He spoke of Graeme Souness being furious at Liverpool's owners for not knowing who he was.
Do you think our owners are clued up on our history and ex players?

Perhaps not the encyclopedic knowledge some claim to have, but probably the same as the average fanQuickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu May 01, 2025 7:26 pmAfter watching today's episode of the Overlap with Ruud Gullit, he speaks of being at a UEFA cup draw or similar. Re: Would our owners know past players?
Mr Pace would probably know more than the average fan. He has a good relationship with most of the old players who still live in the area and/or still visit the Turf. Speaks regularly to a lot of them and they all seem to have a lot of time for him

Re: Would our owners know past players?
I wouldn't expect them to know more ex players than the average fan, maybe new fans from the same timeframe.
They must meet the half time guests and any matchday corporate speaker that played for us.
The directors box doesn't seem to host any ex players like yesteryear.
It takes some doing not knowing someone like Gullit though. He was the world's best player at one time.

Put the old players portraits back up all around Turf Moor, outside walls, they were removed to the disgust of all us older lifelong fans, with no notice, even today, past players familys attend the games, with their children who would love a photo showing their Grandad, the future is important, but so is the past,UTC.

I've been a fan since the 60s, season ticket holder since 72.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Thu May 01, 2025 8:06 pmI doubt it's anywhere near the same as the average fan.
I know the cups and titles we've won, which I'm sure Pace does
I can't name the line ups of those teams, even though I was there for many, I doubt Pace can either
I know the names of major players over the years, not sure I'd recognise them if I saw them now. But would from how they used to look.
What more does the average fan know? ( without reference to Google, or sites like this)

I think you must mean because your memory isn't what it was. That's fair enough. It's not because you didn't attend or ever care about past players and matches like our owners won't.cblantfanclub wrote: ↑Thu May 01, 2025 8:46 pmI've been going on the turf since 1961 and I'm sure you'd beat me Fidel.

Re: Would our owners know past players?
From a aesthetics point of view they did look shite. Different styles, some colour, some black and white (obviously), different resolutions and aspect ratios.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Thu May 01, 2025 8:45 pmThey didn't look shite at all.

The idea was good, the execution was poor. If they had all been stylised in the same way it could have looked mint

Strange irrelevant answer that offers no further insight into your POV. I've no desire to start a thread just giving an opinion on yours which as you've put it up in public deserves some scrutiny and it's apparent pettiness is something I felt, rightly or wrongly.
On reflection I probably could.

To have average fans, there has to be above average fans, who have a knowledge similar to what you're claiming, so don't be insulted or defensivefidelcastro wrote: ↑Thu May 01, 2025 8:55 pmNo. I'm not telling porkies.

Re: Would our owners know past players?
One of the big problems with the player portraits was that that it was unclear whether the players were considered hero's or legends and thus caused a lot of confusion.
Re: Would our owners know past players?
It’s not really a fair comparison, our owners won’t know previous League 1/2 players will they, clearly. However anyone taking over a top club should be aware of who Gullit is if he played for them.

As long as the club is well run, we should probably make allowances if Alan Pace doesn't recognise Mark Ford or Neil Wood.

Re: Would our owners know past players?
That's kind of the point though. The owners won't have heard of players like that, therefore their "knowledge" on the history of our club can't be on a par with the average fan, can it?
At the time the players you mentioned played for us, I doubt the owners will have heard of Burnley Football Club either.

Re: Would our owners know past players?
We clearly need to draw up a 'name the player' quiz for the directors.
And it MUST include Neil Wood and Mark Ford. Nobody tell them which one is which.
This is vital.

Or we could just accept that when it comes to historical players (good or bad) the fans will have better and longer memories, as they were here and the owners weren't.
Let's just move on.

Re: Would our owners know past players?
Probably more essential is preparing the future than the past. Would they even know the last 40 years of owners?
I think they have a good grasp of our heritage, importance in the town etc I’d rather their energy was spent plotting the next season than knowing that we once had Leon Cort.

You start to wonder when those with a dislike borderline hatred for the owners will start to bore themselves as well as others with their little snipes and constant bitching
