Just to be clear the people writing him off after the Rovers game were doing so on the basis of 7 minutes of football played one week after he played well for 90 minutes in the difficult circumstances at Sunderland and it was never a sensible position.
Did you see the Blackburn game? He looked barely able to control a ball. He had also shown nothing in 2 years to show he would.make it with us. It looked like an absolute needs must scenario that he'd ended up on the pitch and it's absolutely possible that that was the case. There wasn't much sign before injuries that we intended to have him in the first team picture.

In fact if Ekdal had been fit at the time, we could have been having similar conversations about how good he had been. It's one of those.sliding doors moments.

A lot of people were rather exaggerating how bad he was in that Blackburn game.

Thankfully Parker knew best. You don't come through City's youth system if you are "barely able to control a ball".

It is not correct to say he had shown nothing in 2 years because he had played well the week before. He looked nervy in the Rovers game and made an error. It was hugely overblown.

Have to disagree on that one, he came on and immediately lost the ball in a very dangerous position, there were quite a few nerves from him in his short cameo.

Hope he does well wherever he ends up, maybe there’s still an outside chance he stays with us

So glad the manager didn't write him off after one below par appearance.

Completely agree, I’d never write off a player after one short substitute appearance. I don’t think it helped that there had been some ‘In the know’ posters on here in pre season saying he’d been miles off the required standard in training and we were looking to move him on.

He'd already been written off by most if not all. He wasn't getting a look I'm and seemed to be heading towards the exit door. I didn't see many threads on here clamouring for Egan riley to be playing that's for sure.

The Blackburn game just seemed to confirm why he hadn't been getting a look in. The surprising thing was the big turnaround.

Had hope that emotions would get in the way here with CJ, but I suspect if he is leaving then Trafford has gone as well.

I suspect if Trafford & Esteve leave you can add a zero onto that :)

A sensible move for CJ , he obviously doesn’t believe he is good enough yet for the premier league, Parker may have even been involved in that discussion, so moves to a league between the Championship and Premier League in quality in the hope of eventually trying the PL in the future, probably better than a squad player with us next season.

Still would have preferred if he had stayed and give it a go but he knows ultimately better than us his current capabilities and potential for next season.

There are Chelsea players all over the place, it wouldn't be my first choice as a young player requiring first team action.

Strasbourg? Meh.
Have you been to strasbourg? Not a place I'd describe as meh at all. You could easily live the other side of the rhine if you don't like France. Beautiful area.

Exactly. Also the opportunity to learn the language and experience a different culture. It’s a shame for us but could be a shrewd move for him and a good stepping stone in his career.

Re. wages.

This is where it gets complicated. Wages in France with the exception of PSG are low. Reliable sources quote Strasbourg's highest earnest this season as earning €2m. Which is actually more than I expected. French football is in financial meltdown due to no major broadcaster wanting to pay a lot for the rights (Chester has been tracking this on the financial thread).

Now, were CJER to sign for Chelsea then, yes, he'd earn a lot more than we could offer. However, Chelsea would have to pay us "reasonable" compensation. However, if this story is true it would be Strasbourg signing him.

Now, I obviously cannot imagine Chelsea would ever do anything in any way underboard, but the cynics might suggest they pay their players at Strasbourg additional amounts. As I say, a club with Chelsea's impeccable record of compliance with financial rules would never do that.

So, unless Strasbourg suddenly go crazy and offer a CB by far the highest wages at the club CJER wouldn't earn as much as if he signed for us (IMHO) or a massive club such as West Ham.
You can safely assume I'm in that cynical camp you mention ecc :D Ligue 1 might be in financial meltdown, but I'm sure Todd Boehly's feeder team will continue to flourish (so long as they remain useful for the mothership).

Not to knock CJ though, the best of luck to him in his career from me.

Fans in England don't seem to understand that the premier league is losing its appeal, English players are moving abroad and word will be getting round about their lifestyles.
Also add in the state our country is in a lot of young people are jumping at the chance to move abroad, if my job allowed I'd rather be abroad to raise my family so maybe it's a life choice.
Take away our Burnley bias and it's a fantastic move for him, the only disappointment is that we'll receive minimal money but that's our own fault.

One good season in Ligue 1 at Strasbourg and he could end up at PSG who in a few weeks could be European champions or somewhere like Marseille who are bigger than most English clubs

Hi Poulton,

Difficult not to be, isn't it?

I'm pretty certain that's how Chelsea work it and UEFA/FIFA don't give a flying one.

I think we all hope he stays in England for pragmatic reasons (our compensation) although it will hurt seeing him playing against us.

Agree Tim. As a long-term Strasbourg resident, it is a beautiful city full of culture, great bars, great parks. It always astonishes me that some people have a little England mentality and slag off other places just because they are “foreign”. As for football, RC Strasbourg are my second team and are a good watch, CJ would be a star here. The only downside is that fans are worried that Rosenior will leave for an English club over the summer.

Following his good performances last season. I'm more likely to follow his progress next season than I was the last times he was on loan. I hope one day we find out how good he will be in the top division of England. We will miss those long balls.

Absolutely spot on. As I have always said JT has always known where his next move is too. Newcastle are trying to spoil that, and the Eddie Howe factor is a BIG one, but he’s going home.

*that being said of Real Madrid come for Raya then there’s money and appetite in the merry go round.

CJER was treated awfully by Kompany who was empowered by the club. Thankfully that problem took itself away, but we continue to see the damage his ego has caused.

Mr Pace as wonderful as he is, has had to learn a painful lesson from these particular mistake.

How devious is the Egan-Riley transfer

Post by Rodleydave » Fri May 16, 2025 7:31 pm

Is devious the right word even? Or is everything above board with this deal if it goes through?
Under UK rules if an U23 player out of contract is transferred, then the club, in this case Burnley, I understand are entitled to a transfer fee.
If the two clubs cannot agree a fee it goes to a tribunal to set a fee to be paid by the new club.

Strasbourg and Chelsea have the same owners and are they trying to pull a fast one over Burnley. If the lad went to
Chelsea direct there would be a fee payable. By going to Strasbourg is this fee avoided and a five-year contract might command a decent fee.
At anytime during that 5 years Riley could be moved/loaned to Chelsea who have avoided paying anything to Burnley.

Why on earth would someone as good as Egan-Riley choose to go to a piddling club like Strasbourg unless the carrot of a Chelsea move has been
dangled in front of him. And canny Chelsea have avoided a payment. Chelsea have a player in the bank as it were, and it hasn't cost them a penny.

I wouldn't be surprised if Egan-Riley (or his mum) is behind this and maybe suggested to Chelsea he could have a season in Strasbourg before moving to them properly next summer.

If the rumor is true then the move as reported is perfectly legal but obviously against the spirit of the game
Therefore it is the ownership rules that are at fault and clearly need changing

If I recall correctly, SP said that both JB and CJER were close to signing contracts. I don't recall him saying with which clubs these contracts had been agreed.

Re: How devious is the Egan-Riley transfer

I'm surprised multi-club ownership isn't banned, because if both teams meet in a European competition then match fixing is guaranteed to take place to make sure the correct result is reached.

Be careful Dave, you have only just got back to good health - we don't want you to have another bad turn

as for the suggested move - welcome to the modern business of football - I would expect our owners to do the same if they had a similar structure in place

Havent our owners been looking to put such a structure in place ? Havent they been looking at clubs in Holland and Belgium ?
