Neville refused access at Forest

Post by ClaretTony » Fri May 23, 2025 9:13 pm

Sky have had to withdraw Gary Neville from commentary duties this Sunday at Nottingham Forest after Forest refused him access following his comments about Marinakis going onto the pitch at the end of their game at Leicester.

It’s the sort of behaviour we’ve come to expect from Forest since they got back in the Premier League.

It really is pathetic.

Sky should withhold Forests access to TV payments as they will have a contract with Forest to broadcast as per the deal signed by the PL that I doubt has a clause allowing clubs to ban members of Sky.

Sky, like TNT, have a contract with the Premier League. Forest do have the right to do this.

I asked DeepSeek, the Chinese AI bot, this question. Very concerning that this becomes the best source but that is another story…..

It gave me a detailed answer for why Forest are indeed within their rights to do this. You are indeed right.

I also asked DeepSeek if a home club could ban certain away team officials. It confirmed it could.

No reason for me asking this of course, purely coincidental 8-)

surely Forest have to abide by the contract signed by the Premier League as it's their league ? Mind you, it's hasn't stopped Man City !

I disagree. You have to let the dust settle when a disputes occured. Neville crossed that line whether rightly or wrongly & the ownership (marinakis) don't want to welcome him. Large parts of English football is now controlled by foreign ownership who have their own customs & ways of doing things & if we don't want to accept that we shouldn't have allowed that to happen in the first place.

It is poor from Forest. Gary Neville is a media pundit and is paid for his opinions. I don't think he crossed any lines and as a journalist/pundit should be allowed to have his opinion.

Curious what Forest fans think. Probably turn a blind eye or try and justify it, because they’re being successful. We’d be the same.

The stuff about referees last season, and that circus with Clattenburg was just as bad if not worse. The pantomime on the pitch a couple of weeks ago. Embarrassing for a ‘proper’ club like them but they’re winning so he’ll have their support.

So if a Forest supporter criticised Marinarkis would he ban them as well. I would have thought that if Sky threatened to pull the plug on Forest for future games (if they can do that under the contract) they Forest might have a change in thinking.

Easy this….

Sky withdraw the game from TV unless Neville is reinstated. Marinakis refuses and sues Sky. Sky pay it… Sky then change the terms of the agreement like they do with my Sky TV contract. No one can ever do this again.

If it isnt that easy, it bloody well should be.

I think you are right to explore other opinions Jakub but if Gary Neville did not breach Sky's journalistic standards then as a pundit he should be allowed to have an opinion. Broadcasting revenue is central to PL funding and punditry is central to delivering broadcast revenue.

I think it is reasonable to consider that other countries may operate to different standards regarding journalism but I don't think Greece is one of those countries.

At least I got the joke !!!

As for this Forest owner I have no idea how anybody can justify his behaviour.
To use the fact he is foreign as an excuse is ridiculous….even by that posters bonkers standards.

What he did to his manager berating him on the pitch because he had just in his mind cost the club around £100m from potentially losing out on champions league against a team in Leicester who were being spanked by every team at the time was very clearly all about the owner and his greed. Where he comes from has got zero to do with it.

The club statement he put together trying to defuse the issue was equally as pathetic. How could he have had any idea how bad the injury was for “one of his family” when neither the player, the medical staff or anyone else on the pitch had a clue. The player decided he wanted to play on ffs. To say he ran on the pitch shouting at his manager was because he was concerned about the player was laughable.

Banning Gary Neville for saying what everybody else could clearly see is equally as pathetic. They may be within their rights but Sky should look at that contract and try and defend their staff in the future. You are obligated to do interviews pre and post match as part of the contract - they should also be able to send who they want to commentate and sky should the only people who have the power to withdraw someone on their teams if they believe they have over stepped the mark. If every club were to ban commentators and pundits for every time they were criticising their club Roy Keane better find a new paper round !

Sky should boycott NF and not go there again until GN is allowed back on. The Chairman is a butter, who should be sanctioned by the Prem League and banned from entering the pitch.

I don't personally know the man but going off what I've read & heard it's fair to say some might conclude that.
Regarding GN he's not everybody's cup of tea himself so in some peoples eyes EM could be doing them a favour. At the end of the day he owns the club & it's up to him. If I started bad mouthing somebody criticising somebody I'd expect a frosty reception in this particular case it's gone 1 step further & he's barred.

Sky should just not do any analysis, pre match discussion, interviews before or after the match with Forest staff , repeat any of the Forest home games, don’t invite any Forest fan or official onto any sport programme etc and when fans complain about lack of coverage they can tell them why.

Well that’s the fake news narrative Neville pushed and the reason he’s been banned. It’s not about having an opinion, fake news is the problem.
Owners shouldn’t be going on the pitch …

Neville and the rest of them are there to give their opinions and the guys in the wrong for looking so confrontational on the pitch in front of the crowd and millions watching at home

There is no Fake News and banning anyone is ridiculous

If Marinakis went onto the pitch to shout at the referee and Nuno stepped in to stop him, that’s different to Neville saying Nuno should resign immediately for Marinakis going onto the pitch to have a row with Nuno because of the result.

That’s not simply having an opinion, that’s spreading fake news and a false narrative. I agree about owners shouldn't be on the pitch regardless.

Fake News is such a lazy narrative though …. Football is worth billions becuase of the drama and pundits are paid to speculate and give opinions and if the owner decides to put his hands in the fire he should deal with the consequences of getting burned like everyone else

If I go on a dance floor and start taking to a woman about finance and does she know the way to the bog my mrs is still gonna think I’m chatting her up ….
