Oldham

Post by ElectroClaret » Fri May 30, 2025 11:46 pm

May be rejoining the Football League on Sunday when they play Southend for the right to play in League Two next season.

Some good memories of Boundary Park, particularly that 3-3 draw (1998)? when they had to open up another stand to accommodate all our supporters.

So good luck to them.

Was there with my dad that night...... We got in super early up at the back of the Clarets end. Will never forget the look on the stewards face when my dad asked him if he thought it would be a busy night!!

He (and us) kept look to the right, (where the away coaches and minibuses were) the stand seemed full and they kept coming and coming and coming. Most fans went to the right as Oldham fans vacated the area but I am sure, a good number jumped into the home end on the left.

I miss nights like that. My dad took me on some crazy nights which got me addicted to Burnley. He's still going, and still a great bloke and big Burnley. Cheers dad.

Went to Boundary Park the other week to watch a rugby league match. It’s in good nick and they’ll be a good addition to the EFL. Hope they do it.

I think I’ve only seen us win there twice, one of them in the FA Cup.

Southend - saw us win a promotion there.

These two were nowhere near the top of the league either.

Expected to be a crowd of near 50k on.
Exceptional for a non league game.
Not fussed who wins, but it will be another club on the up after struggling with bad owners.

And it might well have been above that but Brent Council have restricted the capacity tomorrow, initially to 35,000 but now to 48,000 due to the underground station there being closed.

Supporters organisations at both clubs have issued the following: “Although Southend United and Oldham Athletic will be rivals on 1st June, both clubs are very much alike, as century-old institutions that are the heart of their local communities. Both clubs are poster children for the urgent need for a football regulator, with recent histories plagued with financial mismanagement, unscrupulous owners and scrapes with liquidation.

“Both football clubs have come through their existential crises and are now on the up again, and this should be a celebratory moment for them and their communities

“We implore Brent Council and Wembley Stadium to understand the need for greater capacity, and for all key stakeholders to support both football clubs… by finding creative and workable ways to raise the capacity.”

The National League have said: “We share the disappointment felt by fans of both clubs and are working with all the relevant authorities – including both Southend United and Oldham Athletic. However, we also recognise that the safety of fans is paramount importance.

“All efforts to increase capacity need to be done so in a co-ordinated and appropriate manner that has fans’ safety at the heart.

“Capacity restrictions for events at Wembley Stadium are set by the relevant authorities in conjunction with Transport for London. Any decisions on capacity restrictions cannot and have not been made by the National League.”

Yes, they were my two favourites. Huge following both times, especially in the FA Cup in 1973-74. And that takeover of the Chadderton End was spectacular.

I remember the pitch invasion towards the Chadderton End prior to the FA Cup tie in 1974. Four of us already had tickets in that end and there were plenty of Clarets around us as well so not too sure what happened for us to have tickets for what I guess was the 'home' end. Great atmosphere, around 26,000 I think and of course Leighton at his imperious best in the opening minutes setting up two headers for Fletch and Dobo to put give us a lead we wouldn't surrender. Wonderful times ( football wise at least) to look back on.

Oldham were my Grandad's team, with them living in Chadderton, and Oldham 2-0 Barnsley (Ritchie got both) was my first proper memory of attending a football game. I'll be supporting them tomorrow from here, as i didnt want to risk not getting a ticket, and then was more concerned about depriving a "proper fan" of a ticket if i'd gone over in his memory.

Similar. I was there with my dad and family. Even when winning never felt safe. And when they came back into it and the heavens opened I was desperate for it to get abandoned. It felt like that was it. But those days and even until not that long ago, I never felt like we had won until we had win. In fact went to games expecting nothing.

Remember the streams of fans arriving and taking over the Oldham end. They must have seen nothing like that.

I pine for those days. Turning up with our without a ticket. Knowing somehow you will get in. And a loud, passionate crowd (no phones - like festivals and concerts and everything else!) just raw passion and an entire end as one.

Good on them. Modern football is broken in so many ways. With owners and corrupt governing bodies.

A different but similar scenario. Tonight’s European cup final.

18,000 psg fans
18,000 inter

The rest corporate and neutrals. It’s shocking.

Ive got the program from that match. I was only 10 years old and I absolutely loved that match. But, it was also the first time i had my head in my hands unable to process what id just seen. We were 3-1 up.
I currently work in Manchester. Got a couple of work colleagues who are Oldham fans and they are brilliant lads. A proper club that doesn't deserve what it's been through

Back in the early 90s I was parking up at work at the same time as another car which had a kit hanging in the back window as had mine. I was looking to see which club it was and the other driver spotted me looking and said it’s Oldham, a club much bigger than yours who we would never get the chance to pay again.

That is a good turnout. Although it's funny how Oldham, which much have double or maybe three times the population of Burnley, never seems to have been able to attract the same sorts of crowds as we did/do.

Problem is. Like us they’re surrounded by big clubs. Much much closer. Oldhams about 5 miles from the etihad. And they have no real history (granted they did ok in the late 80s / early 90s.

I knew someone who had zero connection to the town. Who was from London. Picked Oldham as his club. Because they were bottom of the fourth division and said they couldn’t get any worse.

They went all the way up the leagues - then back down. And beyond. Little did he know it could get far better but even worse. 😳😂

Disappointing that so little coverage is awarded to the National League given that recent promotions have shown that there is very little separating the top teams in the NL and League 2. Stockport and Wrexham were in the NL only recently yet finished in the top 6 in League 1. Recently promoted Chesterfield finished in the top 7 in League 2 in their first season back at that level.
Closure of the main Wembley Stadium station lines on the day of the NL Playoff Final just underscores the low level of priority it is given.
