Certainly true that buying on line is often cheaper. I wouldn’t say the same for Amazon, in many instances, I think it’s actually more expensive.

I sort of accept it because of the choice and ease of ordering. Not good on my part really.

It not just that is it. Superstores and these shopping parks have all contributed to the demise of some high streets. Where I live the High Street and local market are both very buoyant. Admitted there are quite a few Charity shops and coffee shops, but they are smart and busy and they are not chain coffee shops.

Maplins was an absolute rip off- they'd charge £20 for an adapter you could get online for £2.99

Wimpys (Though there was still one on the I.O.W).

They're still widespread in South Africa and when we were down there earlier in the year we tried one for'old time's sake'. It was bloody awful, it tasted like those tinned ones that used to be sold a motorbike race meetings and such... I couldn't even finish it.

The one shop i really miss - i don't do much shopping - is Maplins; you can buy all the stuff online, but too often I'm not sure exactly which component i want, so I have to buy two or three to be sure I've got the right one, or if it's something's expensive, buy, try and exchange a few days later.

He was a nice man was Malcolm, sadly passed away in the week before the country shut down in March 2020, he was 79. I am not certain on this but I'm sure he was involved at Burnley FC for a short time as a sprint trainer, probably under Adamson. I'm sure you are right with 1960 Olympics and he was definitely a 400 metre runner.

Dawsons on Standish Street was where I spent most of my Saturday afternoons as a Teenager. Trying loads of instruments then walking out with a couple of plectrums. Did my work experience there as well.

I think you are right regarding the sprint training at the club. Now you’ve mentioned it I remember him telling me about it.

Coming down Westgate Past what was Masseys Brewery's there was a jewelry/secondhand shop called Roners.
At the corner of Calder Street I think a shop called Hebdens which up front of the shop sold model vehicles such as Dinky and Matchbox and at the back motorbikes
Fitzpatricks waas just across the road from them selling model kits and push bikes'.
Back on the other side Lexicon stationers.
Ames record shop where Empire News is now they also had a shop on the balcony in the Market Square.
Alexanders gent outfitters where the Skipton Building Society is.
Dunns gent outfitters.
Roy Marlors gent outfitters.
Tandy motioned above and if you bought on of their diaries got free batteries at the beginning of each month.
Hudson's ironmonger and leathers on Bridge Street and opposite wsa a sweet shop
Webster use to start on Bridge Street and just can remember was a bit of a department store but going in there was stairs to go over a bridge where that sold toys, train sets, books and came down stairs on Cannon Street at the bottom of Hall Street.
Pollards on Standish Street sold musical instruments and downstairs records with booths to listen to records. And on the corner a fishmonger and nearer to St James Street was a Sweet shop with a display in the winder was just unbelievable.
Althans was just across the way on the corner and faced the old market.
Dolcis shoe shop.
Burnley Building Society(which if your child had an account with them got a toy from under their Christmas Tree) then became National Provincial, then Abby national and now part of Santander.
Animal Magic on Croft Street
Atlantis Coffee bar and cafe. Between it and farmfoods was a bargain freeze store.
Richard Hargreaves' tea and coffee shop with the big wheel in the window now at Townley Hall.
Always Supermarket corner of Bull Street and St James Row.


I managed to get a book signed on Burnley by Ken Bolton years later after he had taught me at Burnley College when came to see my uncle who was staying with us on a visit from Canada.

It's not just the shops that we've lost, but the buildings that remain empty

I was wandering down Grey St in Newcastle today. It's one of the most beautiful streets in the country. But so many frontages, and the floors above, remain empty. Absolutely ridiculous. Prime location being wasted. I just can't understand it

The easy access out of town shops, and the cheaper online availability might make it immediately better for the customer short term. But for the population as a whole long term, I imagine we'd be better off working towards sorting out our town centres and high streets

I worry what this void is being filled with - as far as I can tell it's dodgy vape shops, pound shops, charity shops, barbers and off licenses. I struggle to believe their "business" sustains them, and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they had some secret dodgy dealings and laundering going on

It’s not surprising that all these retailers have disappeared, especially outfitters and shoe shops. I drove up from Bournemouth to see Bob Weir at the Albert Hall last night. Firstly I had the misfortune to encounter the crowds coming out of Twickenham and then the audience at the concert. Hardly anyone had any dress sense. Mostly wearing what looked like underwear. Okay, well an array of ill fitting, washed out shorts and tee shirts. It was very hot and you’d expect people to be slightly underdressed in the afternoon but at the Royal Albert Hall in the evening?
