Mentioned it above. One of my favourites. Top class every time. And a decent menu outside normal stuff. Battered tiger prawns are excellent. And they do both types of curry sauce. A must!!
The eat in is very good too.

Re: Best chippy East Lancs area
Went to try rosegrove chippy last night.
8 people in before me - I was stood outside in the rain…. This better be worth it.
40 mins later, I get served. 40 minutes to work through 8 orders is quite something.
No peas left with an hour of open time still to go.
Get the food home, and all I can say is “wow”. And that’s not a good “wow” either. The chips were mainly what I’d call ‘scraps’, and the fish (although a decent size) was full of cooking oil and the batter was a just a soggy coating.
In short, it was bloody awful - how it did so well in the recent Burnley express poll will remain a constant mystery to me…
Maybe I’ve been spoilt for all those years travelling to Nelson (Holts) for my chippy tea, but I just can’t find anything in Burnley worth a repeat visit. HELP!!!

Re: Best chippy East Lancs area
Sounds grim.
Fish & chips, when they're done right, it is the food of the gods. When done badly - they're only fit for the bin. They are too expensive these days to not be bob-on.
A consistently good chippy in Burnley, say one like Kay's in Cleveleys, would have people queuing around the block. Not just locals, either. People will travel if it's top-notch.

Absolutely - I travelled to Nelson almost weekly for Holt’s. That’s dropped in quality recently sadly, hence my search for something close by.

Me and Mrs. B only have a chippy once or twice per year and had one tonight from Holloways on Briercliffe Rd as we've been busy on DIY all day. Got to say it was pretty good and defo scratched the itch

Re: Best chippy East Lancs area
Utley Fisheries opened a new chippy on Leeds Road Nelson the other day, the queue outside was huge, thought there was a commotion going on as we approached on the bus. No idea if they are any good or not, seems to be a Keighley firm...
Re: Best chippy East Lancs area
I used to go to Holts years ago, when I worked in Nelson. Is it still there, does Lee still run it? Fantastic chippy, never disappointed.
I was historically a fan of Birds in Rosegrove, but I've not been in years, because (as mentioned above) it's cash only. I don't have an issue with that, but on the two occasions I've tried to go in the last few years, I've not had cash.
I typically end up at Bannys (always very good) or Ightenhill Fish Bar (a mix of kebab shop and chippy) which is always pretty decent.

Re: Best chippy East Lancs area
Sadly, Lee has sold it on. Most of the serving staff are the same, but the fryers are different. Things have changed and the quality has dropped. Still ok, but just ok as opposed to excellent when Lee ran it.Leon_C wrote: ↑Sat Jul 05, 2025 10:27 pmI used to go to Holts years ago, when I worked in Nelson. Tried Ightenhill fish bar… won’t try it again. Shocking.
Re: Best chippy East Lancs area
I believe the owners of Ightenhill fish bar also own the top of Lyndhurst Rd & the bottom of Barden Lane, near the railway bridge too.bobinho wrote: ↑Sun Jul 06, 2025 10:01 pmSadly, Lee has sold it on. Bit wary of chippies that now just say Fish. rather than the breed/variety of fish it is, as I prefer Haddock to Cod anyway!
Re: Best chippy East Lancs area
None of them are proper chippys, they all serve kebabs and takeaway food. The fish and chips are awful.

I’ve been to old man greenwood’s in rawtenstall a couple of times lately and it was outstanding, proper chippy.
Beef dripping, choice of fish and cooked to order. It really was very good and well worth the drive over from Burnley for them.

Re: Best chippy East Lancs area
Few mentions for Kelbrook earlier. It’s actually been best part of 20 years since it was top notch. The couple running it left in 2007 to set up Banny’s. Their replacements weren’t too bad, but when they weren’t as successful as the previous owners they started taking short cuts and the food went down hill. There’s been a few people having a stab at it since, but never returned to former glories. Latest owners had enough a few years ago, but they like the house so much they’ve decided to stay put and close the chippy permanently.
What’s even sadder is we now have only one chippy in the whole of West Craven.
