Wimbledon

Post by Commy » Mon Jun 30, 2025 1:31 pm

Oliver Tarvet, 21 year old Brit got through qualifying and has just won his first round. He has gone up over 300 places in the rankings. He will play Carlos in the next round, if he wins his first round lol. He can only spend £10k of his winnings as he is the American college system so is still amateur. He looks to be one that could have a good career.

Also through in the womens draw is Sonay Kartel. She beat the number 20 seed.

Great to see the courts looking so green and lush on day 1 of the tournament.

We have some good young players at the minute and 2 16 year olds and one 17 year old have been given wild cards in the womens draw. Mika Stojsavljevic (16) won the US Open juniors last year and was runner up in the Wimbledon doubles juniors.

I've enjoyed watching Fognini over the years, bit of a soft spot for him, didn't realise he was the grand age of 38 though.

Come on Fab.

Not yellow due to extreme heat is what he meant I think.

Arthur Fery 22, knocked out the 20th seed. Another that has gone through the American college system. Norrie through as well.

I was also referring to the state of the courts during the end of the second week when the baseline areas get worn and dust gets thrown up when the ball hits the tram lines.

Some very close and exciting matches so far, well worth watching.
I still feel that 2 sets are too few and 5 sets are too many - why not a minimum of 3 sets and a maximum of 4 sets. If it’s 2 sets all then (instead of a fifth set) play first to 20 points tiebreak.

The young British lad Pinnington Jones played well to get through against a very good player. Another one who has gone through the American college system. He looks like he is going to have a very good career.

Seeds are dropping like flies. No 3 in the mens out and Coco Gauff, 2nd seed, went out tonight.

To win the fifth set in normal tennis, you need 24 points. Plus a few points in the games you lose, of course - say 32 points. You're only saving about a third of the set, and you're likely to lose a lot of the excitement. Remember table tennis reduced their games from 21 points to 11 because they thought the long games were a bit boring.

This is one of the big problems I have with the tennis administrators. If a game is a humdrum 6-2 6-2, they're fine with that because it's over quickly. If it's a thrilling 7-5 5-7, they're fed up because it's gone on so long and they introduce a 10-point tie break instead of the third set. Basically, they are trying to encourage boring tennis.

Valid points dsr, you obviously understand tennis very well (do you still play?). I’m just trying to suggest a new system where the Gentlemen and Ladies play an equal non-sexist game-set-match system. Do the Ladies not have enough stamina or concentration to play 4 sets plus a play-off?

What I am proposing is a much fairer and potentially equally exciting system which imo should be trialled in one of the less major international competitions. If it is never tried how will we ever know?

Norrie 2 sets to 1 up and Tiafoe extracting the urine between sets. Took ages to decide on his change of clothes and then went off for a break. Making Norrie sit there and wait.

Draper seems to be really lacking variety in his game. I don't find him enjoyable to watch at the moment.
Murray was so successful because he'd adapt and change his game depending on the opponent, his in game iq was top drawer.

Draper has a lot to learn in that regard.

4-1 Raducanu

The only point Sabalenka won in her previous service game was a fluke shot that hit the top of the net.
