but you can absolutely see how they’ve ended up with the sentences they got.
Exactly. It wasn't just a tree.
Oh, and as for those who mentioned crimes against people - I'm all for tougher sentencing for crimes against adults and children, especially sexual and violent. Some of the sentencing no way reflects the suffering people go through. I think it's a disgrace.
I would also lock up persistent offenders for long stretches. You know the ones, they are the same names you read about for years on end. They continue offending and blighting our communities until they either die off or become too old. The only respite their neighbours get is when they do another couple of months and the crime rate drops considerably. Once out, it rockets again. People should not have to live like this.

I’m a big fan of harsher penalties for people who are just being dicks….. society is much better if with less dickheads like this pair.

Wow. Obviously a shocking act. But they are really heavy sentences. People literally get less for taking a life or other serious violent crimes.
Maybe if they'd just pleaded guilty from the off and thereby saved lots of Police and court time and costs, etc they might have received a lesser sentence.

Be very interesting to see what those Hamas supporting protesters get for breaking into an RAF base, causing all that damage, potentially endangering life, whilst supporting a banned terror organisation if this is the president for cutting down a tree.

And what about the government vandalism, mindlessly felling native oaks among many others in order to build a non-existent HS2?
In my opinion, the two guys should not have been given a non-custodial sentence, but have a supervised tree-planting community service life for very many years instead. 'Make the punishment fit the crime'.

This is the bit I don’t think people are grasping, and I’m not sure why. It’s not complex.
There’s the act and all that’s considered in that, then there’s the behaviour afterwards, before and after getting charged. Admission of guilt, contrition, remorse etc etc.
They’ve been found wanting on both counts and it’s the latter that means they’ll spend the next year plus in prison.

It really is a British thing.
Went to Blackpool for the weekend with all the family, had a great day swimming in the sea on Saturday, fish and chips for 11. When we packed up we had 4 plastic bags of rubbish we took away. I don't know why we bothered. The amount of empty cans, pizza boxes, rubbish left lying around made me sick to my stomach. The people who do this are completely oblivious to it, and if you did call them out you'd only get a mouthful for your trouble.
I've been in resorts all over the med and you never see this kind of crap in any of them. Locals take pride in where they live, even the youngsters. The standards of our society have fallen off a cliff.
Where I live we have a litter picking volunteer force. My wife joins in when she can. We live on the edge of an army camp and 90% of the volunteers are either Fijian or Gurkha. It's embarrassing.

They would have. But my point is, it seems very heavy regardless. Not that they shouldnt be seriously punished.
