Caught on camera
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... e-coldplay
Reminds of an incident in 2000 when I still worked in the UK. One of my colleagues at the time pulled a sicky which really annoyed as we were dealing with Y2K fallout. Anyway, next day he was spotted by our manager in the footage of the Charleroi incident at Euro 2000. He was instantly dismissed by text via his blackberry 850, allegedly the first time this had been done.

This was a comical video, if they hadn't reacted as they did by ducking away they wouldn't have drawn so much attention to themselves, classic Streisand effect.

Re: Caught on camera
I threw a sicky for our ‘74 semi at Hillsbrough as there were 4 of us with tickets and I was the only driver. Sunday afternoon on The Big Match opening credits there’s me on top of a barrier bursting my lungs screaming. Ironically I spent a lot of the game at a St. Johns post as I had an horrendous headache. Not as bad as the one on Monday when I was dragged into the bosses office with my union rep. Hand slap only, thank goodness.

Re: Caught on camera
This photograph is of six Burnley fans on their way to Frankfurt for the Fairs Cup tie in 1967.
The gentleman on the left is Brian Lucas who was a good friend of mine. He had requested time off work but was refused so went off sick. Unfortunately this photo appeared in the Burnley Express. It was seen by his boss and he was immediately sacked.

I presume he won at an Employment Tribunal for failure to follow procedure? No suspension on full pay for an investigation etc. I know it could be classed as summary dismissal, but what if it was mistaken identity?brexit wrote: ↑Sat Jul 19, 2025 12:47 pmhttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... e-coldplay

Your manager was either brave or extremely foolhardy.

Re: Caught on camera
i can remember back in the early 1980's a mate of mine had commenced a relationship with a nice local young lady. Things were going well until that summer's travel catalogue for Club 18-30 was published and sure enough my mate was on the front cover frolicking in a hotel pool with a topless girl from a holiday a couple of years earlier. That was the end of the new relationship.

Re: Caught on camera
There was a police officer off on the sick long term with a back problem
He also was a football league linesman and was caught on camera on Match of the Day as a player was tackled and wiped him out.
I don't know the outcome

Apologies Brexit. I was writing an explanation of why this dismissal was automatically unfair, and somehow I posted it. It looks rude, and it really wasn't meant to be.

No offence taken, and yes, I don't have a clue about employment law.Goalkeeper wrote: ↑Sat Jul 19, 2025 7:33 pmApologies Brexit. I was writing an explanation of why this dismissal was automatically unfair, and somehow I posted it. It looks rude, and it really wasn't meant to be.
At the time, I was working for an American company in the early days of cybersecurity, focussed on critical infrastructure in the UK.
Every contract I have had since then has a gross misconduct clause detailing actions that could lead to summary dismissal.
I have just accepted that is the way the world works.
