Part of the former Riddlesdown chalk quarry on the edge of Croydon, which was in operation from the late 18th century until 1964.
Now part of a common with occasional loose cows and grazing sheep.
Only have to dig down a couple of inches round here and you hit the chalk seam. Fat chance of growing rhododendrons

Trip out on the bike on the hottest day of the year lol... pen-y-ghent in the background ... rescued a horned sheep caught in a wire fence on my trip round Tosside so have done my good deed for the day

From (almost) the top of the zigzag path leading up from Selborne (Hants). looking north eastwards. Selborne has a garden/museum dedicated to naturalist Gilbert White (who with his brother cut the path in 1753) and also features L Oates the Antarctic explorer (of "I'm just going outside and may be some time" fame)

English summer evening. The sound of leather on willow, the sight of iconic sporting landmarks being "developed", the plight of England/Wales batsmen having to chase improbable 4th innings targets because of abysmal bowling/ fielding.....
