Thoughts on Dubravaka's debut?

Post by CoolClaret » Sat Aug 16, 2025 5:54 pm

I can't quite make my mind up.

Appeared assured in some areas, but then slow to get down at times.

Stats show minus for goals prevented... Thoughts?

Ok, but we sold our keeper for 30m and bought the replacement for 2m. It’s going to be an uphill battle.

Gotta say, not convincing. I think he could have done better for all three goals.

This is where I'm at tbh.

Made a good save early on, but looked slow getting down to a few and getting across to some of those goals.

Made some great point blank saves , but would have hoped for better on at least the third goal.

Yep, same, I can accept being beaten by efforts in the corners but when you've left a third of your goal exposed because your feet aren't quick enough to get central I'm not amused, start your position at your post by all means but get your arse across your line as the cross comes over, got to be quicker.

He is a new signing at a new club playing under a new manager as well as making his debut on the very first game of the season..

He made some mistakes, he made some good saves, he looked nervy at times and assured at times. I wouldn't have expected any more or any less. It certainly won't define his season.

That goes for all the players today.

Did okay and the goals conceded were not down to him. Needs to be more positive with the 8 second rule and ensure it isn't a hasty kick to nowhere.

Trafford will be a massive miss. I expect us to play it less around back because of this.

This lad has done ok at Newcastle when called upon. Think he's a decent shot stopper but that should be any keep at this level.
For me its glaringly obvious he doesn't move his feet anywhere near as well or as quickly as Trafford did this helps you make saves you not favourite for. He won't make as many top saves because of this imo.

I’ve no problem with him on the first. Those are very difficult to get across to.

Richarlison’s second was a very good finish but Dubravka moved like he had lead boots and gloves on. I’d expect that to be saved.

As for the third, he managed to make himself smaller than bigger but the game had already gone by then anyway.

Will have to see over time but I can see the direct approach that we were trying so none of this playing out from the back.

Reminded me of Pope with his kicking ability

Made some good stops.

Must remember that our success last year was the unit defending well and I hope that we will see natural
Improvement through the whole back unit getting better

Think anyone saying he should of saved the second is being harsh.

However looked slow to react for the first and felt like he didn’t risk getting hurt to get to the 3rd.

Made 2 very good saves esrly in both halves though.

Shock horror a 36 year old keeper is far slower than somebody 14 years younger not everybody is a buffon noticeably resistant to mid 30s age decline.

I do, they're not, it wasn't a clean hit, Richarlison hit it early I'll give him that but our keeper was painfully slow in reacting as well as being 2ft out of position.

Dubravaka hasn't played regularly for years and it shows.

He was OK.

I wasn't as excited by his signing as others were but he's fine and it wasn't because of him that we lost.

I felt the first and the third could, and should, have been saved personally. looked like the difference between a keeper in his early 20's and one in his late 30's. Long range distribution was questionable too.

5/10 and I've give some leeway for it being his first time behind this back line.

The inevitable sale of James Trafford could very well cost us, but could we have adequately replaced him with the tiny profit we made on selling?
i doubt it.

Worth noting he’s not played much in pre season. Just 45 mins. And it was his debut. Thought he looked ok.

Made a couple of good blocks (low down) - impossible to make any overall judgement after 90 minutes against a team with a clinical attack

Watch the Richarlison overhead goal again.....Trafford saves that. Still a brilliant goal and he wasn't far away from it - but a top keeper gets a hand to it.

Trafford saves that, Pope saves that, Heaton saves that..

Not sure what Muric would have done.

A tough debut behind a shaky defence today. Once Steve gets settled and Parker works on his defensive shape I think he'll be better protected. I can see why some, are unconvinced based after his first game, expect better showings though

Goalkeeper is the most important position in a team simply because no one else can do it. We've seriously downgraded with Dubravka. In fact today's starting 11was much weaker than the team that finished last season.

Hasn’t be been injured before he joined? Sure if we give him at least more than one game away at Spurs to judge him he’ll be ok.

Hard to judge when that is slowed down, I don’t think any keeper saves it. On the other hand I don’t think we concede the 3rd with Trafford in goals.

Watched the goals back and I’m struggling to think another keeper that saves the first two. They are hit with real power. The third is always favouring the attacker and Johnson is a top finisher in those situations. It’s fine saying Trafford saves it last season but I can’t think of many 1 on 1s like that all year.

we've got bigger problems than Dubravka - he did very little wrong. If his low cost signing enables better elsewhere then I'm all for it, he's plenty competent.

Flapped at some crosses and should have at least got a hand to the 2nd.

Made some decent saves. All in all about a 6.5

Still think he’ll end up being a solid, astute signing.

We’ve just been spoiled with outstanding goalkeepers in the not too distant past - Heaton, Pope, Hart and Trafford.

It's something he'll have to get used to across the league you face top players week in & week out that is the "quality of opposition".
