Re: Bobby Thomas
Unlucky not to make it for us .There were too many consistently better cbs for Bobby to breakthrough He has done well and £8m is not overpriced Choosing the Blunts over Coventry may not be his smartest move though.

Him and Jimmy Dunne have both been excellent in the Championship. To think that during "toegate" these two deputised for Tarks & Mee v Leicester. I think Thomas scored too

Re: Bobby Thomas
Sheff Utd were rumoured to be after Dunne this summer as he was out of contract. Not sure if they tried to get him but he decided to stay at QPR or they didn't bother going for him. He was moved to right back by one of the managers and was superb for them.

Dunne did but Bobby Thomas played just once for us at Millwall in the League Cup when he and Dunnexwere outstanding.warksclaret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 15, 2025 9:39 pmHim and Jimmy Dunne have both been excellent in the Championship. Re: Bobby Thomas
Can't remember Charlie, but I'll be following his career with interest, or at least for this season.
Definitely a top Championship player. Will he be a stand out at this level, in what might be a struggling side or will he be a major contributor to a Sunderland survival?

Re: Bobby Thomas
Ekdal had a mare yesterday giving Richarlison far too much space for both goals and not tight enough on Johnson for his.It will be a steep learning curve but he seemed to lack pace too.
Is Bobby Thomas worth a bid now Beyer is injured again? We have plenty we could sweeten any deal with.

Re: Bobby Thomas
What makes you think Thomas would fare any better than Ekdal or anybody else currently at the club?Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 17, 2025 10:50 amEkdal had a mare yesterday giving Richarlison far too much space for both goals and not tight enough on Johnson for his.It will be a steep learning curve but he seemed to lack pace too.

Thomas gave a penalty away for handball and then his defensive header in the 6 yard box was slotted away for Derby’s 3rd.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 17, 2025 10:50 amEkdal had a mare yesterday giving Richarlison far too much space for both goals and not tight enough on Johnson for his.It will be a steep learning curve but he seemed to lack pace too.

Chips in with a lot of goals and although it’s pleasing to see an Academy player doing well elsewhere, he’s not remotely better than defenders we currently have.

Not sure I'd leave Cov to go to the Blades at this moment in time

Re: Bobby Thomas
On his day like yesterday, Richalison would make Van Dyke look suspect. Too much criticism re Ekdal yesterday. We know hes not the quickest, plus he is probably not the first choice, but there were a number of our players worse than him yesterday. I am certain Spurs would have made CJ look quite ordinary yesterday. There is a good footballing brain in Ekdal. I think after yesterday the club realise we need a mobile, imposing CH to probably come in on loan, but very happy to have Ekdal in the squad to step in. Just need to move on the deadwood like DElcroix and maybe evenloan out Beyer if close to fitness, though I have doubts we will see him in a Burnley shirt again

Most of the Coventry fans on their board are happy to see him go. Quite a few are saying £8m is too much.

Re: Bobby Thomas
Not sure he is the answer but what he has going for him is:
-seems to stay injury free
-very good in the air, and attacks the ball well (we have lacked this quality since O'Shea left us)
-price seems reasonable
-he knows our club
-he is right footed
-Brentford appear keen and they have a good track record of buying in the Championship
As I say-not sure he is the answer but with Cov wanting to replace him, maybe a swap deal with Worrall, who lets face it is never going to start for us unless we get injuries. I should also say I see similarities between him and Tarks when he was at Brentford

Re: Bobby Thomas
I wonder if we put in a buy back clause? We would certainly get him at a discount given we no doubt have a sell on percentage that comes off the price. Not sure he is the profile we need to compete in the Premier League though

Not sure what you mean by that. We were linked with him for sure, spoke to him I believe but it never reached the point of being a deal or him even having a medical.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 16, 2025 12:08 amShould we have been more patient with Dan Ballard?

Re: Bobby Thomas
Thomas is 6ft 4ins 45 appearances, 5 goals, 7 yellows, 24 years old.
I don't think Coventry are trying to sell him.
Tarkowski 6ft 1 in, had 23 appearances before we signed that season 1 goal, 6 yellows, 1 red 23 years old
the season before 38, i goal, 8 yellows
Moneyball would say Thomas is a better prospect.

Re: Bobby Thomas
Did i say that?
What i said is via the modern metric of moneyball Thomas has better figures.
He was player of the year at Barrow at 18 years old in the 3rd division.
Regular at a team that just missed out on promotion.
I didn't know anything about Tarkowski and i will admit i haven't watched enough of Thomas to know how good he is.
But take away the name and look at the record blind its a good one.
Because we sold him (for 2 million wasn't it by the way) doesn't mean he isn't good enough for us now.
Is he better than Worrall or Ekdal is surely the only metric that matters?

Moneyball is all about using data to find undervalued players.

I’ve seen him have many excellent defensive performances for Coventry and with our current nightmare situation I’d be happy to have him in the squad and fighting for his place.

Re: Bobby Thomas
Doesn't have to be better than Worrall & Ekdal, but maybe more suited to the PL. But I would think it strange to have both Thomas and Worrall in an oversize squad, and as I mentioned earlier there could be a deal to be done with Cov and Worrall going the other way. Personally I think he may be more effective than Worrall when you are backs to the wall like we were at Spurs and will be in a few more gamessteve1264b wrote: ↑Tue Aug 19, 2025 3:40 pmDid i say that?

Re: Bobby Thomas
You would assume we'd get Thomas at a discounted rate given you would hope we have a sell on clause. He'd probably be better than both Worrall and Ekdal in that central CB role and give us an attacking presence on corners too.
If we are going after him then presumably it's because he's the cheap option and we don't have much money left.
