Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
For the last game we travelled by Uber from the City Centre but it took an age and was pretty pricey there and back.
I’m going to suggest to mates about getting the tram from St Peter’s to Media City and depending on time either get off at Pomona which is a five/ten minute walk to the away end or get it through to Media City itself and have a drink there before walking across the bridge up to the ground.

After the game I tend to avoid the tram stop by the cricket ground as it gets absolutely rammed (and I'm told Pomona is similar) and I walk across the lines and down Warwick Rd South and it brings you to Firswood tram stop. This I've found relatively quiet and has the advantage of getting you on the tram before it gets to Trafford Bar where people pile on. If you are able and willing to walk a half mile/10 min walk it gets you a seat on the tram and you avoid the queues and crush on the Old Trafford platform. I've done this on my last two visits.

We normally just walk back to the city centre but looking at weather forecast for Saturday might not be the best idea. Whats it like for drinking up around media city?

It’s going back a while but there did used to be buses you could hop on outside the ground back into the city centre after the game presume this may be a thing of the past!

Last time there when it was a Saturday, we got a day travel card for the tram and went drinking round Sale, there were plenty of pubs around the tram stop area then it is only a couple of stops back to Old Trafford, after the match got the tram back to Sale which was a lot smaller queue to get on then had a few drinks there again then got the tram back to Deansgate once it had quietened down.
Probably do the same this weekend too

I'm not sure, it's a mile walk to Firswood, might as well walk up past Victoria Warehouse and along Pormona Strand and through to Castlefield. That's a 39 minute walk and 1.7 miles. Probably takes the same time as well all in with wait times for a tram.

Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
You don’t need a day travel card. Just tap in with a card at the yellow boxes on each platform as you get on and off each time. The system tracks you and charges you the appropriate fee the next dayclaretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 8:25 amLast time there when it was a Saturday, we got a day travel card for the tram and went drinking round Sale, there were plenty of pubs around the tram stop area then it is only a couple of stops back to Old Trafford, after the match got the tram back to Sale which was a lot smaller queue to get on then had a few drinks there again then got the tram back to Deansgate once it had quietened down.

I don’t trust it, got over charged once. I would download the Bee Network app and get the most appropriate travel card to suit needs and use that to get on bus / proof of travel for tram.Down_Rover wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 8:54 amYou don’t need a day travel card. I use the tram 2-3 times a week and I’ve never been overcharged. Tap on and off with your phone/card, it’s a great system, don’t bother with apps and travel cards.

Cheers Down rover & Quoon.
Does it then cap it to the same price as the 1 day pass for the zones you go through ?

Yes it's capped coast, it's £4.90 across zones 1 to 4, I get on at Radcliffe and travel into Manc regularly.
As quoon says just tap in and out or get a ticket if you are getting lashed, thus ruling out forgetting to tap out on your return.

off-peak cap will apply for Saturday which is £7.80, think you’d practically have to travel end to end to hit that though.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 10:01 amCheers Down rover & Quoon.

Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
I don't travel too often on the trams in Manchester but when I do I just tap on and off and have never had any issues when it comes to payment. I think the price quoonbeatz has quoted is if you use tram & bus. If you just use the tram the most you will pay is £4.90 and that's only if you go into Zone 4. Stay within 1-3 and it will be £4,30.quoonbeatz wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 11:09 amoff-peak cap will apply for Saturday which is £7.80, think you’d practically have to travel end to end to hit that though.
Just don't forget to tap on and off and it's easy to forget at a very busy tram stop.

Yes it calculates the cheapest fare for your journey. You will be in a mess only if you forget to tap in and out each time you get on or off a tramclaretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 10:01 amCheers Down rover & Quoon.

It is the same system as used by many bus companies now

Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
Our usual route for Old Trafford is tram from St.Peters Square to Cornbrook (just 2 stops), then walk across the platform for the tram to Wharfside (again just 2 stops).
Wharfside is in between the stops for Pomona and Imperial War Museum and is only a 5 minute walk to the ground. It is relatively quiet after the game compared to all other tram stop options.
The short walk up from Wharfside tram stop brings you to the Hotel Football on the corner of the stadium. Away fans entrances are just on the opposite corner as you walk past the club store.
Then same route back after the game to St Peters Square, or you can stay on the tram for another stop and get off at Piccadilly.
We usually go in the Wetherspoons (The Waterhouse) at St. Peters Square before getting the tram up to Old Trafford.

Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
Not sure how that could have happened unless you didn't use the same card or you forgot to tap out at the end of a journey. If you tap in to start and tap out to end (no need to if you are changing tram) then it can't go past the maximum for the day.
Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
It definitely happened, it probably was my fault, if you are forgetful/get easily side tracked (ADHD) then buy a travel card on app or machine.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 2:08 pmNot sure how that could have happened unless you didn't use the same card or you forgot to tap out at the end of a journey. Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
Couple of other options - there's park and ride at Ladywell on the same line which we've used. And if you aren't coming from the city and you want a close tram stop then there's always the Trafford Centre and tram from there to Wharfside.
Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
I’m sure that’s really funny if you are in on the gag.
I was simply providing an alternative option, not sure why you simply shut it down as it always works for you.
Anyway, not looking to hijack the thread, back to general information.
Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
Yeah Ladywell is the correct name for the stop I mean. Huge car park that I've never struggled to get on and a ten minute tram journey.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 2:55 pmCouple of other options - there's park and ride at Ladywell on the same line which we've used. Went to the test match last month on the tram and they also had a lot of staff with hand held machines to tap which I presume will be the same at United home games.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 11:22 amI don't travel too often on the trams in Manchester but when I do I just tap on and off and have never had any issues when it comes to payment. With a kid I’m guessing it is best to buy the family weekend travelcard for the sake of a couple of quid here or there? Tapping on and off for multiple people feels easier to mess up.

It’s a thread to give options not judgement or put folk off using a reasonable way of paying for travel.
Less faffy to you maybe, I’d rather travel with a prepaid ticket on my phone, it makes me a more chilled man.
What’s the best way for Crosspools to pay for his tram travel question? Keep waving his phone , buy at a station or prepaid on app?

It’s not helpful to maybe those who travel with kids or like to travel in a different way to yourself.
Scare story, singular please, I sucked up the £3.90 loss but decided it wasn’t my preferred chilled way of travelling, not everyone glides around waving their phones.
Re Crosspools , if he’s still here, download the app, and a buy a weekend ticket for £9.30 is what I would do in your circumstances. Less faff.
However I stand to be corrected.

Yeah in a conversation that was talking about going drinking in sale, so less likely that kids were involved. No need for the hardy Burnley boozejockeys on tour in town to be wasting valuable pintage time fiddling with apps and ticket machines when a simple waft of the phone/card will do.
Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
If you are, or are not in the Quoon's groovy gang. You could purchase your tram ticket today and have no issues tomorrow.
Jockeys, if you have too much pintage don't forget to tap in and out and hope the queues to do this aren't too long.
As its general information, the alternative is to buy before you set off and there's a good chance your tram ticket won't see daylight.

Do you what you want NL but I'll confirm again that the easiest way to use the tram network is to tap on and off. It's what the network actually recommends to.

For others who pay find travel difficult due to other issues , such as neurodivergence, an ALTERNATIVE is to buy a travel card. I’m not sure how that is unhelpful.

Thanks folks, I have taken advice from you all and have downloaded the app and paid £9.50 for a weekend family ticket. Avoids the risk of pulling the wallet out in the midst of a horde of angry Mancs after the game
and just feels easier overall. I’m also printing all the various electronic QR codes for the match and travel and putting them in my pocket in case the phone dies, which mine often does.
No idea why a simple advice thread has turned into arguments but for my part as someone who doesn’t go to Manchester often I’m grateful for the help.

I've offended no one. I picked up on your unnecessary comment aimed at quoonbeatz which read: "If you are, or are not in the Quoon's groovy gang." Your explanation for not using the tapping in and out was because you'd been overcharged, nothing more and nothing less, and wouldn't accept explanations from anyone.NL Claret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 29, 2025 3:47 pmI’m sure it is not your intention to offend however you have done with your opening sentence. I'm not sure where that indicates a lack of awareness to be honest and no one has been mocking anyone. I have not made one inflammatory response, that was you aimed at quoonbeatz, and this is a message board so no, I won't keep my comments to myself.
If you wish to go, then go, but don't start pointing fingers at others.
Re: General Info - Manchester United (a)
At the risk of causing further aggravation, it’s important to note you can no longer purchase a single day ticket on the Bee Network app. If you’re not tapping in and out then the only way to purchase a single day ticket is from the ticket machines
